Project DC2 Integra: Truing up the Suspension with Whiteline

In the last edition of Project DC2, we greatly improved our car's suspension by replacing the ancient, worn out Koni Yellow shocks with some state of the art street KW Suspension Double Adjustable Variant III coil-overs. When paired with a stock front anti-sway bar and the excellent Comptech rear anti-sway bar that came with the car, we had a well-balanced combination that worked pretty well on the track and the street.  

All was good, but we wanted to go through the entire suspension and replace all of the old and well-worn rubber bushings in the car with new, hard polyurethane parts from Whiteline. This would bring our suspension up to snuff with the current best stuff out there.


 

Project AP1 S2000: Installing Hasport AP Differential Mounts

Our Project AP1 S2000 is a daily workhorse. It’s almost 17 years old and is coming up on 140,000; the car has been a good reliable daily driver that sees some spirited driving every now and then. 

Recently, we discovered that the differential mounts on Project AP1 S2000 were torn and started to leak. Instead of going back to the OEM liquid filled mounts, we decided to just go with a more solid mount. After driving Project AP2 S2000 and feeling how well the Hasport mounts felt, it was a no brainer to go with them again! 


 

Project GD STI: Making the Front of the Car Stiffer with Ultra Racing

In the last installment of Project STI, we had greatly increased the chassis stiffness with a full complement of Cusco braces. From our EVO project, we had found that on the CT9A chassis, the braces that did the most were the fender braces that add reinforcement from the strong door hinge area to the top of the shock towers. From this experience, we wanted to add similar braces to our STI.

Project Tundra: 5000 Mile Evaluation of Nitto's New Ridge Grappler Tires!

We were very pleased with the Nitto Terra Grappler tires that Project Tundra had been running the last 7 years. We had over 60,000 miles of towing, supercharged burnouts, daily driving and off-roading on them- including a day of driving hard around Willow Springs Raceway. We were very pleased to note that they still had at least 70% of their original tread and still worked quite well!

Project GD STI: Getting Rid of Chassis Flex with Cusco

The GD STI/WRX had what was considered to be a very stiff chassis when it was first released internationally in 2000. The new Impreza platform was built to be much stronger than it predecessor and used much of the experience gleaned in rally competition to build a chassis that was over 100% stiffer than its predecessor. However, that was 17 years ago, and the design that was once the leading edge in unibody chassis integrity is now something that is just average.

Poor Ian, MotoIQ's FNG's daily was his trusty Bugeye GDA WRX. The WRX has given many years of faithful service, but since joining the MotoIQ crew, Ian's commute has gotten much longer and the miles were taking their toll on the car which has over 200K miles. To make matters worse, on his way to work, the car sprung a huge oil leak and oiled down the super old clutch, and Ian barely limped into the MotoIQ garage. 


 

Nerd Alert! Mazda’s Skyactiv-X Engine

As we are sure many of you have heard, the little car company that could, Mazda, has announced their Skyactiv-X engine with the technology to run Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI). Two major challenges to make HCCI work: timing of the combustion and smooth transition between HCCI and regular spark ignition. The HCCI combustion process has been researched for decades, but the technology to bring an engine using HCCI to market has been elusive until now.

So how did Mazda do it? We are going to take a few guesses, but as with most technologies, it didn’t happen overnight. In fact, we would say Mazda’s first big step was a few decades ago. The final piece of the puzzle is a technology Mazda has called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI), and we will exclusively get into how that ties into making HCCI work.

Project EP3 Civic Si: Fixing the @$#%! Steering for Good with SHG Motor Works!

In our last edition of Project EP3 Civic Si, we thought we had fixed our car's bump steer and wandering steering with a roll center correction kit and a bump steer kit from Hardrace. Our car had serious issues since day one. When we first got it, no one wanted to drive it because the car would wander around on the freeway and everyone was afraid of getting pulled over for drunk driving.

So, we installed a bunch of suspension stuff and finished it with the Hardrace geometry correcting parts in the front suspension. With the car finally handling well, which is no small task with an EP3, we were finally having fun driving it hard. All was good for a couple of weeks, but then the wandering steering returned with a vengeance. 


 

TESTED: BG Syncro Shift II Synthetic Gear Oil

Changing out the factory transmission fluid for a higher performance oil is a common solution to reduce the notchy-ness and improve shifting feel. This is especially important in the Getrag MT-82 used in the 2011-2017 Ford Mustang. While we already changed out the trans fluid in our test car, Tim at OPMustang.com said I “HAD TO” try the BG Syncro Shift II Synthetic Gear Oil. I wasn’t really motivated, since the current Royal Purple Synchromax was already a big improvement over stock, but Tim offered to buy me a steak dinner if I didn’t think there was an improvement, so I gave it a try.


 

Top Lube for E85?

Admittedly, none of us on Dai Yoshihara's Formula D team have much experience with alcohol. We all knew methanol was a superior fuel but highly corrosive. We knew it would require a lot of post event maintenance, which would include pickling the engine and fuel system by draining the methanol and running gas through the system to remove the methanol. However, we didn't expect to run into the issues that we did. We needed a solution and were recommended some things from other teams' crew chiefs that all came down to one thing.
