Project C7 Corvette Stingray Z51: Suspension Upgrades

In previous articles about our Project C7 Corvette, we got into the high tech chassis construction of the C7 that rivals the stuff found in exotic cars for a fraction of the price. We also did our baseline testing of the car at Buttonwillow Raceway to get an initial impression of the car. We were quite impressed with the results. In stock form, the Corvette is one of those cars that is so good from the factory that heavy-handed, poorly conceived aftermarket suspension mods can ruin.


 

Project C7 Corvette Stingray Z51: Improving Stopping With a Chevy Performance Big Brake Upgrade Kit

When we did our baseline test of Project C7 at Buttonwillow Raceway configuration 13 CW, we were pretty impressed with the stock Z51 Stingray's on-track performance. We felt the chassis was set up pretty well for the wheel and tire configuration that came on the car, and the whole chassis calibration was matched to the amount of tire the stock car had and the power level of the engine.

So, you read the Part 1 of our introduction to Project C7 Corvette Stingray and probably watched Mike Kojima give us all of the engineering explanations under the chassis. You even read the in-depth breakdown of the LT1 engine. All of this information is great, however, what does it mean for the performance on a racetrack?

We gave our test driver, Karla Pestotnik, a few hot laps to give us some insight and a baseline lap time before we add any performance upgrades in 100% stock form. We hit the tarmac with our friends at Global Time Attack at a Buttonwillow Raceway 13 CW (clockwise) configuration time attack event.


Project C7 Corvette Stingray: Introduction Part 2, A Closer Look at the LT1 Engine

In the last edition of Project C7 Corvette Stingray, we were doing an overall look at the car including it's mostly all new LT1 engine. As we were saying, although the LT and LS share the same architecture, they are indeed very different engines. They are so different that they only share a handful of parts. 

The LT1 is a vastly different engine that has a lot of development differences over the already excellent LS3 engine and deserves a closer look at some of its unique internals. Most of the differences are to improve fuel economy, emissions, torque and powerband width, but there are are some tweaks to make more power overall as well. Take a close, detailed look with us!


WATCH: Project C7 Corvette Gets an AEM AQ-1 OBDII Data Logger! 

Just like Project DC2 Integra last week, we're taking our Project C7 Corvette out to Buttonwillow in 100% stock form for some lap testing courtesy of our friends at Global Time Attack.  Unlike the Integra--who's too old to know what a CANbus is--we're installing an AEM AQ-1 OBDII data logger in the Vette before we hit the track.  AEM's AQ-1 OBDII Data Logger is easy to install and logs engine data transmitted from the CANbus signal feed in the OBDII port of any 2008+ vehicle.  The AQ-1 also has a 3-axis accelerometer built in so we'll be able log g-force data as well!  Take a look at today's video to learn more about it and see how easy it is to install!  And remember to swing by again next week for the results of our C7 baseline track test before we install all the Chevrolet Performance parts heading our way!

Project C7 Corvette Stingray Z51: Introduction (Part 1 of 2)

MotoIQ recently suffered a great loss, our project Golf TDI. A victim of the great VW emissions scandal, we got a cash deal we couldn't refuse to return her to the motherland for whatever VW plans to do with all those dirty diesels. Although getting great money for a well-used car is always good, it still left us short one very versatile daily driver.  

So the search for the next MotoIQ long term project car started. We looked at a bunch of other cars to try to find a new unicorn. While we were in the showroom waiting on the sales dude to get pricing on something else, we sat in a C7 Stingray on a whim. The rest became history, and we finally found our next project!

If you’ve kept up with us for a while, you know what we are about.  We’ve perfected the art of turning our "daily drivers" into "barely streetable" for the sake of best possible lap times on the tracks we rarely have time to visit.  Will this new Stingray project be any different?
