I’m greeted by the sounds of classical music as I walk into the garage of Specialty Cars Fabrication which is nestled in a corner next to the Fullerton airport. A bright light strikes out from the torch of a tig welder and illuminates the front of a welding mask. The man underneath the mask is John Kuchta, owner and proprietor of Specialty Cars Fabrication. Calling John just a fabricator though, would be an understatement and a borderline insult in my opinion. Put simply, he’s in artist and metal is his canvas.

An update has been a long time in coming but it is true, the ARK Team America BNR32 has not gone away or died, it's just that all of the principals have been busy with our other motorsports and industry jobs ranging from ALMS to Formula D.  With all of us so busy working the car kept getting pushed off but lately Eric Hsu has been rallying the troops and work has been progressing on the car all summer.

The countdown to Speed Week is well underway, which means that pretty much everything becomes secondary to getting the car put back together.  One of the most important additions to Project 240SX LSR this year is the new wire harness, the sole informational network responsible for making sure that the car is able to operate to its full potential, and also do it reliably.  As covered in a previous update, the old wire harness which was completed as the car was literally being loaded on the trailer accomplished the goal of getting the car to the salt. However, we knew that it would need to be upgraded in the interest of reliability for future seasons.  Well, the future is now, and the new wire harness is built to perform.

Road to Speed Week 2014 Part 1: The AEM Infinity 8 EMS and AQ-1 Data Logger

If this past year's Speed Week taught us anything, it was that Project 240SX LSR's electrical system needed a complete overhaul.  Our previous harness had been built in haste during the few days leading up to Speed Week 2012.  At the same time, we also knew that if we were going to top the land speed record we set last year, we needed traction control, data logging, and the ability to control any parameter of the engine whether we were on the dyno or on the dry lake beds of EL Mirage or Bonneville.  We found the answer to our needs in the form of AEM's AQ-1 data logger and Infinity 8 stand alone programmable EMS.


 

Project 370Z - Heated Battle, Testing the CSF Triple Pass Radiator

Last Year Project 370Z received some much needed cooling modifications thanks to CSF race radiators.  Their single pass/higher capacity radiator and AC condenser combo made for improved water cooling and retained the factory AC performance.  But as the year went on into the hotter months during summer,  water temperatures started to again fall victim to over heating.  The 370Z front end design only has one opening for radiator air flow.  So from the get go the top half of the radiator's surface area does not get fresh air.  On top of that, I have an external oil cooler taking up the left half of that single opening.  So even though the CSF radiator is a large improvement over the OE unit, there is still alot of factors working against it.  Top it off with 90 to 100+ degree summer track weather in SoCal, an engine known for high heat production and decently quick pace on track with a significant amount of time spent at wide open throttle, you have a recipe for overwhelming the cooling system.  There were a few things we tried before the CSF triple pass unit was implemented though.


 

Project 350Z - ECU Tuning With Church Automotive and UpRev

If you have been following the progress of Project 350Z as of late we have been testing and running the gamut of  your typical bolt on performance parts to see what kind of gains could be expected for a well tuned but lightly modded VQ35DE.  With an intake, exhaust, headers, intake manifold, cams and valve springs in place, it was time to get into the ECU and tune for our specific combination of parts.

To perform the final touches on Project 350Z we headed to Church Automotive Testing, a licensed UpRev Tuner to have our car dialed in.


 

Project 350z: Testing the MotorDyne Engineering MREV 2 Intake Manifold

We are reaching the limit of easy bolt on performance gains with Project 350Z.  In looking over the offerings from MotorDyne Engineering, the folks that bought us the intake manifold spacer which made such an awesome difference. we noticed that they had a lower intake manifold plenum available for the VQ35DE that would work for both the Rev-Up and original intake cam only variable cam timing engines.
