Global Time Attack Round 6 - Buttonwillow II
By Justin Banner
For a while there, it seemed like there would be only one team that would dominate the Global Time Attack series. Chris Rado and his radical F-Wing Scion tC. However, not being able to complete a full season and a retirement at Round 1, Buttonwillow I, opened the door for others to take the lead and win the overall championship for 2012. Even with Rado out of contention they still had a mountain to climb in the name of Jeff Westphal and the GST Subaru Impreza "GST-L." Buttonwillow II would not be very nice to the GST team either however. During practice, the GST car caught fire and would not take a lap for an official time. What was Jeff Westphal to do? As a driver he could win the 2012 Championship, but he needed a ride. Where could he find one in enough time?
 |
| After some negotiations and considering that the GST Impreza made most of the events because of World Racing helping with transportation, Jeff Westphal hopped into the Need for Speed Scion tC F-Wing car for its final voyage. That's right, you just read that correctly. This will probably be the final event for the radical F-Wing car. What's coming next for World Racing? We'll just have to wait and see. |

| For those of you who follow my Formula Drift coverage, you'll recognize that this is the same 350Z that Jhonnattan Castro drove in the FD Championship in 2012. Well, here it's not Jhonnattan who would be the driver. Instead, it would be Carl Rydquist taking over the wheeling duties in the Hankook car. |

| Evasive Motorsports brought a two car fight to the RWD classes. The well known Honda S2000 and the latest release from Scion, the FR-S. With its radical body kit, the FR-S looks more tuning car than street car, but if you want fast times, you need function. |

 |
| The S2000 looked to have remained the same as it has since Buttonwillow I. |

 |
| Our buddies with funny videos, Professional Awesome, even made the trek from Indiana to compete in the final round of the GTA series! It's great to see guys come from so far to take part in such a grassroots type of racing. |

| Despite the heartache, or headache, that Buttonwillow gave FX Motorsports and Billy Johnson, they still came out to finish the season and take some revenge against Buttonwillow for not letting them race and take some records. Will they get the revenge they seek? |

"He breaks the overall record at Buttonwillow by .667 seconds, which was previously held by the Sierra Sierra Evo 8" The FXMD broke the SSE record this time last year. So they really just re broke their own record. http://www.motoiq.com/magazine_articles/id/2240/super-lap-battle-finals--fxmd-nsx-tyler-mcquarrie-break-overall-time-attack-record.aspx

Thanks for the coverage, it was a fun event!

Interestingly, the record would have been broken by a larger amout but Chris Rado had let his fabricator Chip take the car out at low boost to give him a chance at feeling it out. Chip accidentally got in the way of Billy's flying lap which cost him some time. Billy still set the record but he could have smashed it.

No team America GT-R bliss! What's the story, did the Pacidic swallow it whole or has China "developed" a new supercar!? Oh and I never found what type of car Tarzan drove to that RWD victory time?

Nice coverage! There were actually 3 Snail Performance cars, two in Street AWD, the one piloted by Taylor and the other by Myself, and then Travis in Unlimited AWD.

Mike, I'm not sure Billy could have "smashed" the record. Yes Chip held back Billy on the last two S's (I was there and I saw it with my eyes, along with the FXMD Team)....so, I'm sure Billy could have gone a bit faster....not sure about shaving off .3 though. Billy was upset and went up to Chris, and Chris apologized....at the end it was a good race. Rumor has it Chris Rado is gonna bring a Benz AMG SLS next year.

I was hoping to see Rado in his new Mercedes at this event. Even if only for a debut event, shake down, media opportunity. Then get to work over the off-season with development and testing for 2013 Round #1.

Wow, something related to TA! Sign me up! Did China keep the TA Skyline? lol Too bad the fxmd nsx did not get a cleaner lap, would have been interesting/exciting to have a time that represented 10/10th from start to finish. Congrats either way. An sls? ... If it is a heavily modified sls built for track use, hell yea. If its near stock, lol, who cares. I can't see the sls being anything beyond novelty in the world of TA. An SLS would be lunch against cost-comparable TA cars, and I don't give 2shits about luxury and comfort when I am talking about TA, so those two variables are irrelevant.
