Formula Drift Round 4 - Wall Speedway

Formula Drift Round 4 – Wall Speedway, NJ

By Justin Banner

You know, I’m really starting to wonder what it is about Formula Drift, weather, and Wall Speedway. The rain really likes to change up the show or tear it up, it seems. While we were fortunate not to have the issue of hurricane winds tearing up the paddock, rain did cause a ruckus halfway through qualifying. However, unlike NASCAR who would have called off qualifying and gone with points, this is a rain or shine series and drivers have to deal with it. Many were successful in doing so while others really couldn’t find the line they needed to keep on track.

Formula Drift Round 4 - Wall Speedway
Welcome to the Wall, Chelsea Denofa!

Qualifying in fifth position was “Rowdy” Chelsea Denofa in his BC Racing BMW M3 Sedan with an 88 point run. Chelsea is continuing to show why he was the XDC Champion with big angle and even bigger wings.

He's got his Qualifying Mojo back! Daijiro Yoshihara in 4th Place!

Fourth Place went to 2011 FormulaD Champion, Daijiro Yoshihara in the Discount Tires/Falken Tires Nissan 240SX. He’s making a comeback towards the 2012 championship after a disappointing knockout at Atlanta!

Norwegian Hammer, Fredric Aasbo qualifies 3rd

Third Place went to Fredric Aasbo in the Need for Speed/Hankook Tires Scion tC. While he had a great run at Atlanta, Florida knocked him, along with Need for Speed teammate Matt Powers, out in the Top 32.

Vaughn Gittin, Jr making a comeback for the 2012 Title? First at Palm Beach and Second here seems to make me think that!

Second Place went to Vaughn Gittin, Jr, in his Monster Energy/Falken Tires Ford Mustang RTR for a second round. Ever since Round 2 at Road Atlanta, JR seems to be getting that Mojo back with a First Qualifying spot Great 8 finish at Palm Beach and his second place qualifying position at Road Atlanta. However, has his Top 16 elimination at Round 2 and Top 32 knock out at Round 1 hurt his chances at a championship?

Formula Drift Round 4 - Wall Speedway
2011 Rookie of the Year showing you why he earned that title! First Place Qualifier Odi Bakchis!

First Place went to Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis in the M7 Japan/Nexen Tire Nissan 240SX. Odi’s performance in eliminations hasn’t been stellar, but he has been consistent! Could that consistency be the key to a 2012 championship? It’s worked for Chris Forsberg.

Formula Drift Round 4 - Wall Speedway
While not a great run, it's not a bad run for Daigo Saito considering he's never been to Wall Speedway!

Other notables for Qualifying were Justin Pawlak in the Falken Tire Ford Mustang coming in at 14th while his “rival”, as of Palm Beach, Daigo Saito in the Achilles Tire Lexus SC430 came in 17th. Darren McNamara in the Falken Tires Nissan Silvia is now with SPD Metal Works as of this round. This puts him back into a Right-Hand Drive V8, but with far less power than the original Team Falken Sky or the 350Z. However, Darren with no time to get used to his new team or car was able to pull off a Tenth Place Qualifying run, proving that this Irishman still has a lot left to show!

Formula Drift Round 4 - Wall Speedway
So much for new car teething problems! Darren McNamara brought the Falken Tire Nissan Silvia into 10th Qualifying position!

Okay that last picture is PRICELESS!

I need some help here because I thought Daigo ran OVER 2 clipping points in his follow run against Conrad and yet they still call for a 1more x? And then Jr hits the wall on his lead run and Matt seems to drive without fault, albeit a little more conservative, yet Jr moves on? Please help me understand what I missed guys! I've actually grown as a fan of FD since I started coming to Motoiq, this year's judging has me as confused as Tyler's recent driver blog!

PS Justin I think you meant SC300/400 on page 2 for the Soarer!

FD is rigged (much like D1 Grand Prix), and only established to entertain the audience.
Once peeps will find out (and get tired of it), the sport will die, and enthusiasts will move onto another Motorsport venue.

JDMized, Carl Sagan once said "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." That being said, what proof do you have that FD is "rigged?"

If FD is rigged why doesn't the teams with the most money always win then? Daigo Saito has a very low budget, Achilles spends the minimum to be a tire supplier which is 10% of what Falken, Nitto and Hankook pay yet he puts the hurt on the big buck factory teams with his near privateer budget.

I sit very close to the judges and I can hear and see what they are doing. They are discussing the runs, looking at instant replays, sometimes many times and deliberating the details.

Doesn't look fixed to me. What people don't understand is the judges have a different perspective that spectators, media and live stream cameras. I know, I sit next to them in the spotters stand and I agree with them 90% of the time.

The things I didn't agree with; Chelsea's accident being his fault. Tyler should have advanced because his lead run was better, not because Chelsea's accident was his fault. The Judges didn't see JR stall and cut the track by 30 feet to catch up to Dai because of the smoke. Our far side spotter caught it, it was too smokey for me to see too. That should have been one more time. Dmac vs Matt Powers should have been a one more time. But that was it.

Coupe = 2 door
Cabriolet = Convertible
Sedan = 4 door
Touring = Wagon
(amazing how many "enthusiasts" screw this up)

FD isn't "rigged" per se
but it sure isn't in the BEST interests of FD for lowly privateers to advance beyond all the Video game Quality cars..

If FD had any intention of being HONEST & FAIR at judging,
and Really wanted to cut the Political/corporate crap.
Each Judge should be at Separated vantage points around the course.
NONE of them should be able to talk to each other during judging.
and a "Guest judge" picked from the crowd of spectators should be a Tie breaker(if needed)

unfortunately Corporate Money DOES pay the bills..
so enthusiasts should just ENJOY the big Drift "show"
i just wouldn't hold my breath hoping for a Real driving "competition" at this event anymore..
The Clan said it Best ----> C.R.E.A.M.

BTW:
if u count the 1st run
count the damn 2nd run
crashing in Either run = Total DNF

Frankly privateers don't have much of a chance against factory teams like ours. The best drivers get hired for the big teams or their own teams are sponsored for big bucks by the big corporations.

Money means better equipment and more experience personnel on the crews and better engineering behind the scenes. Corporate dollars don't buy FD officials, they buy better performance and get wins that way.

It is great when a lower funded team like Achilles can put the hurt and a well funded team like Falken but this is a rare case and speaks a lot of Daigo Saitos driving skill.

Neither Falken or Achilles bribes Formula D. People have to stop with the stupid conspiracy theories.
