It was time for a Dyno run. With 12 degrees base timing and the mentioned modifications, the car put down 135.8 hp to the wheels. We expected more, but the restrictive stock B-pipe, and less than optimal Nismo/Borla exhaust were culprit along with low base ignition timing.

We turned to JWT for their S-3 cams, and Unorthodox Racing for their crank and water pump pulleys. After initial installation we were unimpressed with the performance, but remembered how JWT said that the cams take time to break in, and how ECU learns and adjusts to the new cam profile. Sure enough, about a week later a stab of the throttle getting on the freeway caused the car to break traction, doing a rolling burnout in 1st gear.   Once again this car brought a smile to our face like it had so many times before.

  • JWT S3 camshafts
  • Unorthodox Racing water pump and crank pulley

Another trip to the dyno netted 145.7 hp to the wheels. With this setup the car probably could have picked up another 5-10 peak horsepower with a 2.25/2.5" cat back exhaust, a cold air intake and JWT ECU program for S3 camshafts but soon we became tainted with the idea turbo charging this project.

In May 2000 we had an opportunity to drive Ryan Besterwitch's project Ultimate Se-r.  We drove his car out to the Se-r national convention in Texas (from California), and it never failed to delight. We didn't really drive all that fast, what impressed us most was how easily this car made power. With a large turbo like it has, we expected a lot of turbo lag. This wasn't the case at all. At about 3200 RPM the car starting making power and by 4500 RPM it was kicking major ass. This car could do rolling burnouts in 3rd gear at 20 psi that laughed at the little barking our tires did in project Sentra Se-r. The idea of having the good handling characteristics that these car's already have on top of V8 crushing power was to tempting to resist.

So what can we expect for the project now? Is this thing even still around?

Believe it or not the car's still in my garage. It's been collecting quite a bit of dust while we've been working on this site but there's more good stuff to come.

yes good work on the sentra.but can you post some photos and information and how to install a turbo and a blow of valve on a sr20de in a sentra or any car.including how to find the vacuum hose that run from the instake system.post the best way to connect and run oil line and water line to the turbo.

All blowoff valves come with very detailed instructions on how to install them. Most valves have slightly different routings as well. Generaly on a turbo, oil is routed to the turbo from the oil pressure sender unit and water is taken from the throttle body water.

Nice to know we are still around.

Every once in a while I see a B13 with over 200K miles on it that appears to have been beaten daily. That makes me smile. Then there's this car that despite my love/hate relationship with still sort of has the new car stink inside.

145 is pretty good for S3s. Was this with the timing still at 12*?

It was either at 12 or 15.

Wow! I think JWT ECU is supposed to be 15. I get really good results on NA/DE with 17 or even 19. Shoot with JWT ECU you need to run premium anyway. When I dynoed/tuned my last DE setup (1/2 way) it was with a Calum RT and it took A LOT of timing up top. That is one strong motor you have there either way. Especially when you consider the header and exhaust are bottling it up too.

Heh, at the time my close friends both had turbo SR20's so there was little point for me to bump my timing up a couple of degrees but your right there is some free horsepower there. I bought the JWT ECU at Stillen of all places back in 96 and never did a reflash until I turboed the car. Regardless my car blushed at your complement!

The exhaust components on the 145hp dyno: 1st gen hotshot header, stock B-pipe and the NISMO/Borla exhaust.

Exactly that exhaust setup is a choker style from the 90s. 2.5 SSAC/3" custom on mine with high-fow cat 138/124. Intake was stock hose w/ N60/Cone filter. JDMDE (with lowport intake cam)

Project 200sx on this site has an exhaust similar to yours stay tuned for that article. When the car comes up on the big cam it bones out but as you can imagine its LOUD. I guess I must be transitioning into my crusty old fart stage because comfort on a street car sounds (pun intended) way better to me than an extra few horsepower on an N/A motor. I have a restrictor for the muffler to quiet things down on the turbo setup but it absolutely kills the boost response which is no fun and why I never use it.

I once saw an old SE-R being runned at Tommy KAIRA at the Yokohama Classic way back in 1999 when I was in Japan. The Japanese know their stuff. I also saw the Calsonic GTR there and got to peak at its Switch Assembly of the console, able to ignite N20 and fire up the cylinder with just a flick of the button.

As an owner of a B13 I love seeing this. I have a question though Aaron about the wheel. Do you remember who made those chrome 15s?
