Daijiro Yoshihara 2011 Formula Drift Champion

Dai Does It!- Formula Drift Round 7 at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA

By Justin Banner

For such a wild season, everyone was expecting the same old Toyota Speedway, the House of Drift, as it's been called. However, the House got a new addition put on that added the second inner oval. It was then compared to Wall Speedway, without the bumps in the middle to add a drastic variable to the suspension setups. What was quickly discovered was that with the new addition and the lack of bumps, vision was at a premium! Without the need to slow their cars down for the bumps, drivers could really stand on the throttle, allow the rear tires to become plumes of smoke and blind the following driver and the fans. Daijiro Yoshihara, for example, made contact with a plastic barrier and launched his car in spectacular fashion after doing a follow run during Thursday Practice. At the time, the SPD Metalworks crew did not know that this would be the perfect indicator of how their weekend would go as the car was fine other than a bent crash bar and lower control arm, but more on that later.

Many drivers also found the walls of Irwindale quickly during Thursday practice and Friday Qualifying, including Jim Guthrie, who hit the wall hard on Friday. He suffered a cracked vertebrae and stretched tendons, but otherwise was OK. Normally, he wears a HANS device and did not have it on because of the lack of being able to smoothly turn his head side to side. Guthrie is now on the hunt for a better neck protector. Guthrie's car, however, was damaged to the point where he will need a new car for 2012, but I've been told one is already in the works!

A hard crash for Jim Guthrie

Qualifying wasn't very forgiving to many drivers who normally make the Top 32. Aurimas "Odi" Bakchis, in the Feal Suspension Nissan S14 240SX, did not make the show, giving Walker Wilkerson in his Fatlace Nissan S13 Coupe, who qualified in a strong 7th seed, a chance at taking Rookie of the Year. Odi feels that the appeal of the left foot braking technique has left the judging tower and is what gave him such a low score. It also didn't help that he was resting his foot on the brake pedal, either. Joon Maeng, in the Team Nitto/Bergenholtz Racing Mazda RX8 did not qualify at Irwindale. Despite the great looking runs and with Pat Mordaunt's 61 giving him 32nd, you needed a great run to make it this year! Nikolay Konstantinov, who made the show last year and faced off against Vaughn Gittin, Jr. last year, was not able to make the show because of a blown engine.

17th Qualifier, Matt Field

Matt Field, who is becoming one of the rising stars in Formula Drift and took out Dai last year, was able to make it in at 17th seed in his Fatlace/Blacktrax Nissan 240SX S14. Pat Cyr, coming from Canada in his HSD Suspension Toyota Corolla was also in at 28th seed. Despite his lack-luster season, Samuel Hubinette in his Sam Hubinette Racing (SHR) Dodge Challenger was able to take the #1 seed. The Qualifying results for the Top 5 in points, in order of their place in the standings, were Daijiro Yoshihara qualifying 6th in his Discount Tire Nissan 240SX S13 Coupe, Justin Pawlak in the Team Falken Ford Mustang got 2nd, Darren McNamara in the Team Falken Saturn Sky got 26th, Chris Forsberg got 16th in his NOS Energy 370Z and Matt Powers got 10th in his Team Nitto/Team Need for Speed Nissan 240SX S14. Last Year's Champion, Vaughn Gittin, Jr., placed 12th in his Monster Energy Ford Mustang.

Team Boso's Ross Petty fought engine problems caused by a collapsed hydraulic lifter in their LS3 powered Nissan S15.  Ross still managed to make it into the top 16 even with seven cylinders.

Saranon (Non) Pornpatanarak made the long trip from Thailand to compete in the Vegas and Irwindale rounds.  Unfortunately he did not qualify.

Even though he did not qualify due to spinning on his first run and an overly conservative second run, Odi Bakchis won Rookie of the Year Honors.

After working hard to disassemble it against the walls in Las Vegas, Emmanuel Armandio looked strong in his Achilles Tire Nissan 350Z at Irwindale.

I saw a few of the second round passes and they were epic! FD desperately needs a good TV deal. The 30 minute Versus deal is awful, there's not enough time to show all the driving. Also, it would be really great if FD could set up a live timing and scoring system. It would be a lot easier to follow the action at home. Can you say FD app?

It was a good event. There was far too much V8 exhaust noise, but oh well.

Dai's FD check was only $10K?!? FD needs a TV deal and some big time title sponsor. It would be nice if that check was $50k.

@ Eric: That's the check he took home for winning the tires.com triple crown. Not sure what his winnings were for taking the FormulaD title.

Justin - I've enjoyed your event coverage all season long, looking forward to it in the future! Any heads up on the rumors flying around for where drivers are going to end up and new rides? Someone was saying in the driftstream chat that Dai was going to end up in a Mustang next year? Please tell me this is rumor! PS when I heard your voice/accent on Motoiq radio last week I thought, "Dude, a NASCAR guys who loves FD!" PPS How's a certain defiant s12 coming along? :)

FD needs to find a home on that new Auto based show from Discovery, "Octane" or something like that. It really does make for entertaining show.

NASCAR guy who loves FD? More like a NASCAR guy who left the mundane sport. Seriously, I haven't seen a NASCAR race (Camping World, Nationwide, or Sprint) in a few weeks now.

As far as Dai going to a Mustang, I don't think so. Doesn't seem like it would be up Scott or Mikes' alley. You'd probably have to get Mike to comment on that, though. Being on the East makes it sort of hard to keep up with the rumors considering the sport is still very West Coast based.

Defiant1 is coming along. I have a clutch, ecu, cams, pistons, and injectors waiting for the block to come out of the machine shop. There has been a major change in power-plants... well, ok, not totally major, but "cams" should clue some of you all in. Just wait for the first build installment!

The more I think about it, the more deserving Dai is of winning the 2011 championship. He is humble, hard working, has competed in all 8 seasons of Formula D, has grown immensely as a driver, and has been working hard gathering donations for his people who were unfortunately rocked by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear drama back in Japan. That is freakin cool.

Plus he is the first Asian to win the championship in FD despite the sport of drifting being of Asian origin. CONGRATS DAI!

Justin - "Cams" huh? My spider-sense is tingling. From you verbage and description, I'd bet (if I were the betting sort) you're going KA24DE while clearing out the JWT catalogue? Although, with your desire for the unconventional, you could be going VG, Honda or even Miata for all I know :) I look forward to it!

Eric - Your first sentence there, I thought you were trying to convince yourself :) I hadn't thought about Dai being the first Japanese driver to finally win an FD Championship. That is indeed pretty sweet. Winning any sort of championship is so tough and I can't imagine how difficult it must be in a Motorsport inherently on the edge with some definite "subjective" elements. It'll be interesting to see FD grow, those stands looked packed everytime I tuned in on Driftstream. Who knows Eric, someone might ask you to come out and tune their V8 next season, haha!

Dai will not be in a Mustang next year. I cannot say what he will be in for sure but the silly season is about to start.

Bruce: that might have actually happened already. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! There's a chance you might catch me on the FD circuit next year as a data guy, but it's still a little too early to say for sure.

Eric - Here's one for you. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em and THEN beat 'em at their own game! If I ever figured out what I wanted to do with my Goat, I'd love to see what you could do with my LS! BUT I've got other irons in the fire right now before I do anything with it. When are we going to be hearing about the next Eric Hsu project? Are you like me and don't like to say anything until things are well underway? :)

Bruce: yes, I prefer to wait until things are confirmed before I start talking or writing about them. There are several projects brewing in different genres so hopefully they come to fruition.

What to do with your Goat? Put a set of long tube headers on it, a nice mild cam, and a screw type blower on it of course!

Eric - I look forward to when some of those projects start developing into reality :) As far as the Goat...you like the blower over an STS turbo kit? I'll pick your brain more after I get a few things sorted and start into it, but I got time :)

I've never seen a STS turbo kit in action so I think I need to check one out in action before I properly comment, but the way I see it, a big heavy car like the Goat needs immediate bottom end and midrange grunt to get to 120mph. How else you going to beat an R35 from a light? I'm sure the turbo adds power, but there's always the lag and non-immediate throttle response associated with a turbo. On the other hand, if I wanted to go from 120 to 200mph, I'd be all over the turbo (albeit maybe not an STS specifically).
