Scuderia Algar/Sierra Sierra Enterprises 2011 Ferrari Challenge Team

For 2011 Sierra Sierra Enterprises has teamed up with Algar Ferrari to campaign two Ferrari Challenge cars in the North American Ferrari Challenge series. You might be wondering how this came to be. If you've been following my adventures with Sierra Sierra and Christine the EVO, then you might remember than Sierra Sierra used to own and operate teams and cars in Formula Mazda and Formula Atlantic. Running the EVO obviously doesn't require a big staff like active race teams do, but Richard the team manager and chassis engineer, Mike and Jethro the mechanics, and Dan the everything else guy still report to a fully stocked airplane hanger with plenty of equipment to run race cars. Dave or "Emp" the driver is all over the place freelancing with driving and coaching gigs too.

So since the decision was made to concentrate primarily on international time attack events in 2011, that left these guys with a whole lot of time. Emp got a coaching gig with the Algar Ferrari drivers and they needed to put together a race team. Of course that's an expensive ordeal (even for Ferrari guys). Sierra Sierra had the experienced and fully stocked hanger full of everything to run race cars. So Emp introduced Algar and SSE to each other and so far, so good. Richard, Mike, Jethro, and Don had to learn everything from scratch never having run Ferraris, but they did exactly the same thing with a Mitsubishi EVO and look how fast Christine is now. If I were to trust any team to pick up the pieces and make some race cars damn fast in a short amount of time, it would be the Sierra Sierra guys.

Nads shot these pics at a Buttonwillow test last month. While Ferrari Challenge cars aren't the fastest cars in the world, I still think they're beautiful race cars. They look better than Porsche GT3 Cup cars if you ask me. What would be so bad about going to a track to watch and hear Ferraris screaming all over the track? That sounds like a pretty good day at the track to me. Check out the 2011 Ferrari Challenge schedule to catch Scuderia Algar and SSE Ferraris at a track near you.

Just read the captions to get the story since there are so many pictures to help illustrate what's going on. The images and captions are a collection of what Nads has been leaking on to Facebook several photos at a time, but here they are all at once. Some specs on the cars themselves first:

Thanks Eric! That was a fun look at the beginnings of a new race team.

It's really cool when you can build something like an Evo to beat these guys for much less than the cost of a Ferarri but that 458 is beautiful! Those mid engined beauties!

Eric, you remember months ago when we were dreaming up a perfect mid engined time attacker on one of the time attack articles? I think whatever that is now needs to include a 9000rpm VQ or 9000rpm destroked LS motor. I'm just saying, 9000rpm is such a beautiful sound and Ferrari is one of the premiere high rpm musicians!

Canadian quartet. Eh?!?

Wow this is a unique opportunity and a very cool one for SSE and Eric. Looks really fun, is there some sort of coverage for this series? Good luck to SSE on this and Time Attack this year!

Bruce: I think the Ferrari music comes from the firing order as a result of the flat plane V-8 crank. But a VQ at 9krpm would sound pretty damn nice too. Maybe somebody should buy a 458 and build a time attack car out of it....

Milk: It is Shell Donax UB Brake Fluid DOT 4 Ultra I believe.

Beaters: Its not actually my opportunity since I'm not involved with the Ferrari side of SSE. The cars use all Marelli ECUs and logger dash so there are no Cosworth electronics on these cars. But should SSE want to build a 458 time attack for 2012, I'd be all over it! I'm still fortunate to be involved in the EVO which is getting very exciting right about now.

For some reason I kept thinking it was one part high volume intake design and two part exhaust. I guess the flat plane design would increase exhaust flow which could help the harmonics but for some reason I had thought it was a cross plane design with a weird 120degree config?

Yes, a VQ at 9k would would be a beauty of the Asian persuasion! Only 9k I've hit in a car was the F20C and I was all grin :)

If we can find a generous benefactor to pay off my house sized student loans, all my other debts and put me in a higher tax bracket, I'd consider rocking a 458 for time attack. Sure would suck getting beat down by an Evo though!

355, 430 and now the 458, beautiful cars.
oh... so, is red the spec color too? :p
thanks for the in-depth break downs Mr Hsu.

The 458 is a sexy bitch.... Got those cars pretty low with some pretty good camber on there. Gotta love race cars. See those air ducts for the brakes on the 458? Awesome stuff.

Bruce: it needs to be a longitudinal mid engine car like a Ferarri, Lambo, or even a Pantera haha. Then we would be able to use some kind of race car 7-speed Hewland or XTrac transaxle with paddle shifters.

OMG: I dig most Ferraris except 308s, 328s, and Mondials. Even if they aren't the fastest things in the world, they look so fucking cool.

Mike: You are LS crazy dude. Back at XS, Motec brought over a 360 with a built LS in it to dyno. That would have been your dream car man. I think it was this car, but I'm not 100% sure:

1973 Pantera, motor to be detemined by flip of a coin, and let's say Hewland with straight cut and dog engagement for clutchless, paddleshift action.

I love the LS but will not be convinced of its beauty, ESPECIALLY with the emblem, in the 360.

Maybe the Cosworth LS R&D should be to give it a little Ferrari high RPM flavor and then see what Mike swaps it into!

Know how to make a mid engine car better? Put an LS into it.

Dave: That LS7 NSX is pretty damn cool. Nice fab work. I wonder if it runs as good as it should. Strange how the car doesn't get a rise out of me though. I guess that's because I don't care for NSXs whereas I like S13s. Same deal with the Ferrari. I like them, but I'll probably never own one and couldn't care less if somebody bastardizes one.

Bruce: Any engine that isn't a Ferrari engine looks like shit in a Ferrari because modern Ferrari engines are so damn nice if you pay attention to detail. How much does a '73 Pantera run?

Steve: When's the Access Port coming out for a 458?

Fairly clean, running examples are now 40k+. But some sure do look NICE! Although a clean shell is all that's needed. That GTM from Factory Five would be a gorgeous and less expensive base to work from but might be difficult to get sanctioned for any sort of racing :(

That LS7 is pretty wicked in the NSX!

Seriously if I was a baller I would have to get one of those 458's though. If I was going to race baller style I would run a GT3 RSR except it has no soul because more than 40% of ALMS GT3 cars are RSR's. The GT3 RSR is wrecking the diversity of ALMS but I don't care.

Hey Eric, I read not too long ago that SSE is scheduled to run at Tsukuba at the end of the year, can you confirm that? I can't wait to see the numbers :)

Mike: Don't worry I'm sure some other idiot will put an LS in a GTR. :) Hey shouldn't you be trying to get Nissan ad money like Mike Ferrara (DSPORT) recently got? Not only that, they gave him a sweet ass deal on a 2012. Perhaps because it was some wack blue color though...

If you were a legit race team, why wouldn't you run a GT3 RSR would be the question. It is a legit race car with plenty of support. Shit, even the Porsche trailers are at each race to supply spares.

Alex: I believe that Tsukuba is part of the plan, but nothing's been confirmed yet. It was the plan for 2010 too actually which is why Rev Speed had ads with pics of the Sierra EVO in them (sorry Rev Speed), but it was too tight to make it after Superlap. We would have had to air ship the container to Japan and that would have cost $55k to get the car to Tsukuba.

not an R35 GTR, but some nutty Yurapian put two turbos on an LS motor and put it into an R34 a while back. way before hipster drifter kids were getting butthurt over it.

I always thought it would be cool to build a 512/Testarossa with a 4g63. You'd have about the same power, a huge weight savings and you could fill those ginormous side pods with the mother of all ground effects all while giving every purist in the area code a stroke.

OMG: some dude in France built a quad turbo Mercedes V12 widebody BNR34 GT-R. I can only find small shitty pics of it on Google, but having seen the car in person in the UK back in 2007, it was a pretty clean job.

Daewoo: that is what we would call "maximum pissoffage" amongst the guys I work with. A 2JZ in a '69 Camaro, rotary in a STi, EJ257 in an EVO, LS3 in a '66 Mustang, etc. which are all designed to piss off those that care. If you ever have money to burn, you should build one. That would be sick. I think I'll give it a try if I ever win the lottery.

This list of comments was classic! Love the 4G63 in 512/TR idea. This website is the freaking best. Maybe we could put our minds together on some super-bastardized quad-rotor Lambo or something.
Eric: Dude, can i get a job with you guys. I'll sweep floors, clean the Sierra trucks, whatever. Just so long as you guys let me sit in that 458 and make engine noises every once in a while. Cool, thanks!
