Tip #21: Always Use Lube

by Dave Coleman

This seems simple, but so many people get it wrong. If you're drilling or cutting metal, you should ALWAYS use some kind of cutting fluid. This keeps the drill bit or saw blade sharp much longer, and it makes a better cut. In a pinch WD40 works ok, since it always seems to be around, but do yourself a favor and get some Tap Magic cutting oil. This stuff really does work noticeably better.

I've used cutting oils even with hacksaws going back so long cannot remember. Good tip, drill bits last a lot longer, and when you get into taps, dies, extractors, the stuff is essential.

Mobil also makes a very good cutting oil, though it comes in a giant gallon jug. Tap magic is easier for the common man though.

Dear Dave:
When is the next Miatabusa installment coming out? I'm having withdrawls from its awesomeness!

LeMons race at Buttonwillow this weekend, then I'll jump right back on the Miatabusa project. It won't be long, I promise!

How about the last chapter of the Frankenmiata? I want to see how you weld two Miatas together!

Dumb question, why didn't you save the Miatabusa's engine for the Frankenmiata? It's paid for and you know it runs right?

It seems that every time I remember to put WD40 (as you said, better than nothing) on there, it's too late and all I get is smoke. :(

BTW, Dave, see you there. I'm bringing the toyhauler (with generator), so feel free to cruise by. I'll probably be next to the Mothercluckers.
