Earlier today at the Source Interlink 2010 Superlap Battle, we (team Sierra Sierra) smashed the previous Buttonwillow CW13 time attack lap record with a 1:41.046 lap time. Emp cranked out this damn near perfect lap in the Sierra Sierra EVO 8 (Christine) during his very first hot lap in the first time attack session today. The previous Buttonwillow time attack record in the 13CW configuration was a 1:43.34 that we (team Sierra Sierra again) ran in practice at Redline Time Attack's 2010 season opener back on March 28. We tried a larger turbo that we've never run on track before in the 2nd time attack session so I had to freestyle the ECU tuning. Luckily the Cosworth Pectel SQ6 ECU has an excellent data logging platform that makes freestyle tuning really quick and accurate for me. Then we backed up our quick lap in the third and last time attack session with a 1:41.185 (we need a bit more track time with the larger turbo for evaluation). That once, seemingly unattainable old Taniguchi/HKS CT230R EVO record of 1:43.527 is easy for us now. I remember watching how smooth and effortless Taniguchi executed the 1:43.527 back in 2007.  That's how it looked when Emp dished out the 1:41.046 in Christine this morning. In fact, Emp cranked out a 1:47.xx during a WARM UP lap on only half warm tires and brakes with less than 2 seconds of accumulated full throttle.

In a previous test at Buttonwillow about a month ago we ran a 1:43.2 on two step harder Hankook C51 tires and a low boost setting of 1.6 bar with the new BorgWarner EFR 8374 turbo. We did not have a chance to turn up the boost that test day, but we didn't expect a 1:41.0 by turning up the boost (2.2 bar) and changing over to C91s today either.

We made leaps and bounds developing the EVO these past couple of months with front, center, and rear differential changes, the BorgWarner EFR turbo, Turbosmart CompGate 40 wastegates (BTD write up coming soon), and of course the evolution of the Cosworth 4G63. As the Cosworth representative on the Sierra Sierra team, you can bet your ass I was glad that there was no cylinder head removal necessary at the track today or yesterday. Tyler, Clayton, Lyon, Magnus, Martin, and myself's efforts at Cosworth to improve 4G63 cylinder head sealing at higher power levels are definitely working. The diff and engine changes are internal information so asking me what they are in the comment box below would be useless since I'm unable to discuss them at this time.

We tried a tire change after our first hot lap in the first session, but it took a little too long. We probably need to practice our NASCAR skillz and add fuel next time. Actually Mike, Jet, Don, and Richard did all the work. I just offloaded data and held some fans while they did the hard work.

2nd fastest overall was Billy Johnson in the FXMD NSX that ran a 1:41.949. Unfortunately the NSX suffered from engine problems in the last time attack session. Were we worried that Billy would come out and beat 1:41.0? Hell yeah we were. A mid-engined V-6 turbo car with crazy aero, an experienced team, and a quick ass driver like Billy would have you worried too.

Excellent job! It's great to see multiple US teams reaching HKS's development level.
How did you fix the head sealing problem?

It was only a matter of time. I am looking forward to seeing what the JDM junkies come up with to argue against this one. With sportscar racing in America like ALMS and Grand-Am to grassroots Spec-Miata racers, it is not hard to believe that a US based team (who actually knows what they are doing) can be competitive and I am sure this is just the start.

Congrats, beating your own times is always a rewarding experience. Just keep up the good work and stay there! It's always harder to stay at the top then get there.

WOW, the FXMD NSX has really changed! Any MotoIQ coverage on the changes soon?

So, about those diffs......... haha JK. ;-)

Great write up and very impressed with your success. Setting the bar as high as you have on the world stage known as Superlap Battle leaves zero doubt as to who is the number one Unlimited class team in Time Attack competition. You definitely earned this title in every way and especially with the likes of FXMD hot on your tails as they would have been the new fastest TA team if it weren't for your success. The pressure was on and you guys nailed it!

Also want to say thanks for the props for me and AQ Motorsports. I didn't realize we were 4th overall in our Mod/Ltd class car till I read your article. Thanks for all your help in years past.

Also noteworthy is that all three classes track records fell hard with you in Unl, us in Mod/Ltd, and AMS in street. TA is about constantly resetting the bar and Superlap Battle is the place to do it! Congrats to all involved.

I'm bummed the competition didn't get to heat up between Christine and FXMD. I love it when the FRs or FFs get to push the AWD dominance. I remember back in 04 or 05 when GMPD came out and shocked everyone with an FF Cobalt of all things! That was a little inspiring.

I know that better balance = more grip, but it doesn't seem like too many FRs are getting balanced enough to even compete with the AWD grip and group.

Now that I've digressed too much already, congrats to you, Eric, and the SSE group! You guys sure know how to build a track beast! How did those exhaust manifold? bolts hold up this time? Would you say the BW turbos run cooler temps due to their design?

Congratulations on the 1:41.0. That is smoking fast. I was there the day that HKS did the 1:43 and it looked ultra smooth. The quick laps, should look smooth, and Eric stated above, it did.

So who is going to be the first into the 30's?

"I'm bummed the competition didn't get to heat up between Christine and FXMD."

Actually, they were within 1 second of each other and FXMD was on a flyer when they broke their motor in a firey display of expensive parts. SSE earned it fair and square but it wasnt without a worthy challenge from FXMD.

>034 runs a 24v VR6 turbo in their A4.

This was the old setup the current time attack setup is a 4cyl. Based of the build thread on their forums it's a 1.9L TDI block (ALH) with a 1.8L 16V head (ADR) stroked to 2.2L. I don't wanna break any rules about posting links to other sites in comments but if you google "034 time attack car, sneak peek" you can find a link to their forum and build thread.

Thanks for all of the congrats ya'll. I'm sure the Sierra Sierra guys will be reading this tomorrow when they're back in the shop.

JIYAKKU: I couldn't agree more.

mxpop/JC: I'm glad to see you modified guys dropping lap times like the unlimited guys are. I think overall it gives everybody else motivation to go faster or even just get behind the wheel of a car on a track and have fun which equals job security for people like me (cha-ching!).

Der Bruce: the key to a successful FR platform in something like time attack would be light weight, big tires, and big powered mid engine layout which is basically an old school Can-Am car....or an NSX with a longitudinal engine and Hewland transmission from a ChampCar. I'm surprised nobody has built something along those lines yet. I know I would if I had the budget and time. Also the turbo falling off problem was due to the materials the bolts were made from. After we changed to inconel studs and silver coated nuts, the problem has not returned.

Tyndago/Sean: we are.

TheFinn: whatever engine it was, it rocked. Excuse my ignorance. Send us a link. Forums that ban links are way lame. Its an insult that they think you don't know how to use Google.

You guys are all close but I got this. I emailed the guys at 034 and read up on their site just to be sure I had it right. They are running a tall deck diesel block mated to the 5 valve per cylinder Audi head. Their first version of this motor was set up with a stroker crank and displaced 2.2 litres but the current version is set at 2.0 litres to keep the piston speeds reasonable. I fixed things up to reflect this info.

So, by fixing the head/shortblock sealing issue, not only have you eliminated a headache, you've eliminated negative comments from David Buschur about your headgaskets popping in a series he doesn't run that he wouldn't even be competitive in either. Oh wait, I guess he's a headache too.

Eric, I've thought along a very similar mind set wondering why no one, stateside, has put together an ultracompetitive Lotus, MR2 or even a Boxster (they're DIRT cheap nowadays)?

Granted, I wouldn't drive an MR2 without the APR widebody, but it's still the same underpinnings as the Lotus. AND I wouldn't build any of those platforms with their original drivetrains, but they have the right chasis to start with.

I sometimes wonder how the the NSX might do with a little loss in torque and weight by switching to a turboed four. Some of the snap-oversteer might get relieved with the weight loss and different torque curve.

Anyway, your response helped remind me the great, or crazy, minds think alike!

Congratulations Eric! That's great news. You guys broke your old record by 2.3 seconds and the difference between SSE and the CyberEvo was only 1.3. Can't wait to see how much faster SSE will be in another 6 months. SSE taking DOWN the CyberEvo is something I don't want to miss.

# Nick, SCC found something of the sort back in 07:

Not my sort of front end, but a better looking clip could probably be found. Unfortunately, I just don't know if that suspension would give you what you might be looking for in a time attack!

Erik: Excellent observations!

Der Bruce: I think the inherent problem with the Lotus or MR2s of various years is their short wheelbases. I would imagine it would make them a handfull to drive with big power even with big tires. A Boxster might make sense with its longer wheelbase and wider track, but it has no roof. A convertible with a cage looks silly if you ask me. If you are going to smoke the world, you have to do it in style.

Thank you all for the positive comments. I believe the SSE EVO isn't done breaking records yet. We have some tough competition ahead of us with balls out cars like the ACS Mustang, CyberEVO, and others.
