Oil is fairly cheap- at least cheaper than a new engine! Newer engines have a lot higher standards than older engines. They must last longer, be more fuel efficient, and pollute less. To operate for a varied range of conditions, the engines use multi-weight detergent motor oils that contain additives. Think about everything you’re asking your motor oil to do- minimize wear from metal to metal contact, transfer heat, and wash away all the crap (contaminants) that is a by-product of combustion. The oil must do all of this under a lot of heat and pressure, so if in doubt, throw it out!

| Motul 300V Competition 15w50 is for cars that kick ass. It's a high performance, racing motor oil intended for use in high-revving, naturally aspirated or forced induction engines. Its double ester technology results in 0% shear loss, meaning none of its viscosity is lost during operation. There are six viscosities in the 300V lineup that can be interchanged for different types of racing or longevities, ambient temperatures, or engine fuel dilution. |
Generally, a more simple oil formulation will last longer. Multi-grade oils provide better protection for a larger range of operating temperatures but a bigger difference between the cold and hot viscosities (such as your 5w30 oil versus 10w30) means there are more chemical compounds (viscosity modifiers) that can break apart. With excessive heat, they could leave more carbon deposits on the valves.

Next time I do a freebie oil change...someone is tasting some oil.

It's coolant not Kool-Aid. "OH, YEAAHH!"

Sarah, or anyone; I got a question: I have some 10W30 oil laying around (most of them are Mobil 1, Mobil 1 Extended Performance...they're all fully synthetic). I also have some Purple Royal as well. None of the quarts I have are fully sealed though. Can I mix them and use them on my next oil change or it's not adviced? Let say some 10W30 Royal Purple with some 10W30 Mobil 1.....it's not a good idea? (it's for my DD....). Thanks Alex

so next time I'm at a gas station, instead of using a paper towel I can simply lick the dipstick clean, brilliant!

SFW....lmao :)

Did you just tell me to lick my motor oil? If it comes down to needing to TASTE my old oil to find out if it's still good, I think I'll just go out and buy another 5 quarts.

Slightly OT but if you a) own a Nissan (who doesn't?) and b) it has a VQ motor, OR c) you're really curious about oil (read:dysfunctional) read this: http://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/258663-vq-oil-analysis-and-info.html Excellent information about oil, viscosity, grade, and expert interpretation of Used Oil Analysis (UOA) by the OP. Not a Forum Troll, he knows his stuff.

Next time I go to IHOP I'm going to pour it over my pancakes. It's Mobil not maple. Thanks Sarah.

Jim, if you want sweet, you're better off using coolant. Obviously kidding... And JDMized, if you just want to top off your oil, most oils are compatible as long as they have the same API rating and classification (ie mineral or synthetic). I'd rather put *something* similar in there than run low on oil. But I don't suggest using just a potluck of various aged motor oils for your next oil change because the additives may be different and may not function as well.

Speaking of sludge, page 2 of the below linked .pdf lists certain engines that are known to be prone to sludge. http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g1490.pdf

Thanks Sarah. I change my oil religiously every 3000 miles or so (always use full synthetic)....so all the oil laying around the house is full synthetic. I just don't wanna waste it....so I might as well use it.

Sarah, LeMons racers suggested I contact MotoIQ for advice. They said "they're the best..." So, Q for you: would you guys be willing to test product and give us blunt feedback? It's product that's already being used by NASCAR, 8 of the Top 10 UMP dirt track teams, MiniSprint Yamaha 600s, and NHRA drag teams. BUT: I'd love to have technical input on it's ability to perform in smaller, tuned and turbo'd engines... I
