Redline Time Attack - Round 5 - Chicago
By Wes Dumalski
On June 12th and 13th the Redline Time Attack series blew in to the Windy City for Round 5. Some heavy hitters from around the country converged at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet Illinois to battle it out for the fastest lap. The Autobahn Country Club is one of the premier track facilities in the nation let alone the midwest and there is little doubt that the action that took place this past weekend will serve as a benchmark for events to come.
 |
| The Redline battle was settled on the Autobahn's 2.1 mile south circuit. |
It all started on Saturday when after a morning of fast laps and good conditions mother nature reared her ugly head and doused the track with heavy rain and lightning. Luckily the storm cell passed quickly and during the lunch break the top notch crew at Autobahn had the track ready for action! As usual the Saturday practice times served as a prelude of things to come.
 |
| The ladies trust announcer "Nads" because he's a professional... |
The highly competitive Modified AWD class heated up right off the bat when Brian Lock in the Cobb Tuning Nissan GTR clicked off a blistering 1:29.256 lap. We also saw the return of the Gates 311.com/Nitto tires Evo X, Ryan got things started on Saturday with a 1:32.352 despite losing his front splitter in some sort of excursion. In the Street AWD class Cameron Benner looked fast and clean among a group of fast competitors. Despite some quick times set on Saturday it appeared as if many teams were leaving something in reserve for the Attack sessions on Sunday!
 |
| Haven't seen this car before? Been under a rock? Brian Cobb piloting the Cobb GTR. |
As Sunday morning rolled in so did the cloud cover, lots of talk about the radar and what was in store in the weather department. As practice sessions began the Enthusiast group cleaned up the line for the other groups to follow and right out of the box these guys were turning amazingly fast lap times! It was an all Evo show as Atync Akad, Devin Schultz, and Martin Musial (of AMS fame) battled it out exchanging fast laps. In the Street AWD class a classic Evo VS STi battle was heating up between Cameron Benner in the Cobb Tuning STi, Dan O'Donnell in the ProfessionalAwesome! Evo 7, and Todd Reid in the Fortune Auto Evo. As the other groups took the track for practice it seemed apparent they were betting on rain in the afternoon as they were holding less and less back especially the Modified AWD guys. Brian lock and Ryan Gates were starting to show their cards and were dipping in to the 1:29's.

As attack sessions began the gloves came off and the Enthusiast AWD guys battled it out like true pugilists! When the bell sounded local auto-crosser Aytinc Akad came out on top in his Evo posting a record setting 1:38.815 closely followed by Devin Schultz in, yep you guessed it, another Evo, and the third spot was filled by Martin (do we need to even mention what car he was driving) Musial with a 1:39.647. These times for very mildly prepped street tire equipped cars are amazing! The Enthusiast RWD guys were on track at the same time to settle their dispute, in the end Taylor King took top honors in his S2000 posting a 1:44.140, behind him Glenn Reyes turned a 1:46.115 in his 350Z, and in third spot was Hal Glenn in his OS Giken 350Z with a time of 146.399. Sadly there were no enthusiast FWD cars in the mix.
 |
| Aytinc Akad was unstoppable in his RS Evo. His 1:38.815 was good enough to win Enthusiast AWD as well as Enthusiast overall. |

|
| Glenn Reyes looks good finishing second in Enthusiast RWD in his 350Z. |

man this was a pretty exciting event!

I hope this doesn't discourage future Super Session participation... Looking forward to Sebring RTA!

wait a second. a 64 thousand dollar minivan... got wrecked?! holy shit! how does that equate to its resale? better yet, is that car owned by mazda still or did someone leave the window sticker on for the lulz?

I feel bad for Mr. Enthused Mustang. Go slash his tires while he's off why don't you. The Touge Factory's rear diffuser looks sort of like the Sierra Sierra diffuser. Future trend? The Super Mod S2000's rear diffuser looks like one of those exhaust kitchens. Where you put in the raw food in foil before you leave for the camp grounds and by the time you get there, you have a hot cooked meal ready to serve. That car sure could use some help in the looks department with its black eye - glare strip - rear kitchen style. As for the Mazda5. The $995 Autobarn lifetime free car wash sounds good. $64,999 hand written Speed5 Edition and then crashes it. MSRP $18,745, insurance fraud! Woo Hoo! Quad turbo 4 cylinder dual clutch 6? I'm surprised he didn't spend the extra $975 for the Speed5 rear mirror defroster.

Weasel, This is why we should be weary of dealer demo.'s..... In all seriousness it was a car they built for the one lap of America competition.... Jim, Ribbing the Mustang is all in good fun... We have ALL been there, maybe not that far off but if we don't have levity what do we have? The S2K rear diffuser was a home brew special. Not sure about the boy scout meal but I don't remember seeing Ben at the food stand during the lunch break so.... That car reminded me of the Millenium Falcon "she may not look like much but she's got it where it counts"... I think the cold weather package might have helped but only if it included tire warmers....

Oh and for the record this was my first attendance of a time attack event.... I honestly expected it to be un-eventful and anticipated using creative adjective's to make it sound more fun than it really was. MAN was I WRONG. I had a blast, the day was action packed and I met a TON of cool people. If you haven't been to an event the best part is how open everything is. No roped off area's, take all the pics. you want, talk to the teams and drivers..... If you haven't gone to one you need to go!

Wes Dumalski, Thanks for understanding my bad sense of humor. And you're absolutely right, the S2K does have it where it counts. It came in first in it's class and that's what ultimately counts in time attack. I enjoyed the article and the event seemed action packed. Time attack like any event is more exciting when you have someone you're rooting for.

While the super session is good for spectators it fucking blows for competitors. If you win, you get a pat on the back. Oh wait, even if you win the entire event you only get a pat on the back. It's time attack! Super sessions waste engine life in unlimited (super modified) class cars with limited life spans. Limited unlimited... Yes, it appears that Sierra Sierra has started a rear diffuser trend haven't they?
Thursday, June 17, 2010 11:15 AM
Eric, When I was writing one of my captions I was going to draw a parallel between the Sierra Sierra car and all of the cars now taking rear diffusion seriously. Have you guys competed against the Touge Factory car yet this season? I have been working towards running TT with NASA in Project 200SX and have come to the realization that it will be nothing more than a hobby that drains money! Seriously is there anyone making money in time attack/TT? I Seriously doubt it..... That said the super session DOES SUCK for the competitor's but it is an optional thing no? I can see from a spectator's point of view the appeal of it, but if I had a car prepped for unlimited or even modified, I would likely not participate..... Can you imagine the non-safety conscious cyber evo in a super session? If that thing crashed hard the driver would be toast...

Maybe I've misunderstood the rules of RTA, but how did that twin-charged Civic make it into street FWD? I thought you could only have one "major modification" to the motor i.e. an NA build, turbo, OR supercharger. Was it simply classed as a forced induction motor?
Thursday, June 17, 2010 2:31 PM
Pretty sweet to see some One Lap competitors here. Was the twin-charged Civic okay? Anyone know the extent of the damage? Also sucks about the Mazda5... is it destined for the crusher? Say it ain't so! And Charles Rhyu... wasn't that guy on the old BMI/Hot Version American Togue episode (I think Eric Hsu was on that episode too w/a WRX...) where he's a standby car, gets picked cuz another car blew its head gasket, and his k-swapped EG Civic goes in and totally kicks everyone's butt? He's got a sweet looking CRX now, good to know he's still going the light weight, FWD route.

Great write-up Wes! I love the fact that you can walk the pits and get up close to the cars. As for the rear diffuser, gotta give credit where credit is due, and that's the German DTM series. Check out the diffuser on this Audi: http://www.fourtitude.com/news/uploads/Motorsport_News/new_dtm.jpg

Nick, Rules permit aftermarket forced induction, I don't see the "one major modification" language. 4-1.5 Aftermarket forced induction is allowed. I believe this is fair ga me for more than one form...

Khiem, One of the guys from the ProfessionalAwesome! evo team interned at honeywell. His name is Alec and said to tell you Co-Op said hello... They did an awesome job with that car. Many of the cars were on suspension setups that I thought were from questionable companies while they were on KW Clubsports....
Thursday, June 17, 2010 8:27 PM
Speedball, The evo is a total write off from my point of view. The rear trunk was pushed forward enough to alter the rear door gaps. The main support beam was pushed forward a good4 inches and the fuel filler neck was popped out. The civic fared much better and appeared fixable. Suspension seemed fine but the left rear quarter was smashed in pretty good.

Wes, yeah, when I saw 'Evo 7', I figured it was those guys.
Thursday, June 17, 2010 9:11 PM
I wonder if the Cyber Evo would ever participate in a Super Session?
Friday, June 18, 2010 6:33 AM
Wes, Just for a little clarification, we are not on KW Clubsports, we are actually on KW motorsports 2 Ways. Thanks for the great write up! -Professional Awesome

Thanks for the clarification and correction. Perhaps I was caught up by the bling that is on our Project S2000. Regardless I was trying to look at many of the cars suspension wise and not too many people were on KW's which is surprising. The higher dollar cars were on JRZ's or Moton's, but I really thought I would see more cars on KW....

Wes, Sierra has not run against the Touge Factory car this year. In fact Sierra has only competed (and won) one time attack this year at Buttonwillow. After that the car had to leave to Australia and is still on the boat on the way back.
Friday, June 18, 2010 12:37 PM
I await it's return... Once the car is back do they run all the time attack events (east coast)? Are you familiar with the TF car? I was checking it out at the event and it appeared to be on Stance Coilover's. I guess I had always tossed them in with the likes of Tein, JIC, etc..... Are their higher end damper's on par with the big boy stuff... anybody know?

What's the best way to get to the gallery for this event? Dan

Thanks Wes, but is there a way to get to it from this page or the front page? If not I would recommend it!

Eric/Wes, outside of contingencies which RTA does have, what form of amateur motorsport at all do you get anything more than a trophy for? It's not just time attack...goes back to the whole making 1 million dollars in racing costs 2 million dollars deal.
