A job posting at Cosworth in Torrance, CA just popped up. Read below:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cosworth LLC has an opening for a part-time engineering intern to support the development of sport-compact [I hate this terminology, EH] performance parts. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers to develop, test, document, and aid manufacture of components in a fast-growing product line. This is a part-time position for 18-30 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

-Assist engineers in conceptualization and design of mechanical engine components, ancillary accessories, and production/quality tooling.

-Part number creation including data entry, specification research, and document creation.

-Devise and carry out test procedures to validate performance of new components

-Communicate with vendors to source and oversee production of new components

Required Skills:

-Proficient in use of MS Office software suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

-3D CAD experience (preferably Unigraphics NX4)

-Strong written and verbal communication skills

-Strong critical thinking skills with ability to apply engineering principles and practices to solve problems

-Willingness to learn while doing

-Mechanical experience, specifically automotive or mortorsports related, is desirable

-Knowledge of automotive aftermarket, specifically sport compact segment, is desirable

 Required Education:

-Third or fourth year undergraduate student working towards mechanical engineering or related degree

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please do not bother Tyler if you are not an engineering student OR do not have the required skills (read listing again please). Tyler is a busy guy and I don't need him asking me, "Dude, WTF did you send this guy to me?!? He doesn't even remotely qualify!!" Let me tell you that if your comprehension skills are shit to begin with, you're probably not going to even get considered. As with most intern jobs, it will probably start with the administrative grunt work that nobody else wants to do, but there will definitely be opportunities to work on the cool stuff here and there. Good luck and maybe I'll meet you in the final panel interview.

Please submit cover letter and resume to:

tyler.hara@cosworth.com

Technically I'm in my third year, but after missing a semester over the fall, I'm more than a bit behind. If this spot is open next year, I'll probably apply. Is this summer only?

Damn, I qualify for pretty much every required skil, I just don't have 3 years of engineering coursework under my belt. It's basically my dream to work at Cosworth, too :/

Hell, I've got automotive technician courses, engineering graphics courses (Using Autodesk Inventor 2010. Think SolidWorks, but... well... better), and I learn EXTREMELY quickly. Oh well, maybe after I save up and take some more college courses, work on my engineering degree, I guess I'll apply some time.

I don't think the internship is summer only. The last intern we had was year round.

There will be plenty of opportunities in the future.

Can I intern while also working my current job? It would be like the best of both worlds, electric drive and high performance. I could also get a good workout in throughout the day by running back and forth between buildings. What do you guys say?

I will pass the word on.
Thanks for the rod!

Except for the fact that I'm in norcal, I pretty much fit the bill perfectly, I was working on my machinist AS at the local JC but transfered before I finished the degree. I'm competent in both autocad and solidworks, learned g-code and am a mechanical engineering student.

If it were a summer thing, my sister's out in long beach. Maybe I should apply anyways just in case.

Sounds like a wicked job, I'm unable to apply this time around but I can't wait to apply come next summer. Thanks again for posting this up here. Just wondering, where are jobs like this usually posted?

It is a summer job with the option to stay on if you are good at it. On the flip side if you don't really vibe with the team, it will probably last shorter than the summer!

Mike, aren't you a little over qualified?!?

Woowwwww, if only this were on the east coast... i fit the bill exactly (I can use NX4 to NX6, solidworks, pro/e, catia, ansys, flowizard, etc..).. The only thing I'm missing is being local and the fact that I'm only a sophomore in mechanical engineering..

I will DEFINATELY be sending in my resume. I am a third year mechanical engineering student at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly UMR) and although I am a little bit behind my classmates, I am very confident I would be an asset to Cosworth! I have been using NX3 and 4 since I was a freshman, and have been on either the Formula SAE team (rated in the top 20 world-wide) or ECOcar design team throughout that entire time. This sounds like an amazing opportunity to be involved with one of my favorite companies in the automotive industry!

Is the job still open ? I am a Industrial Technology Graduate and I am looking for part time work in the field and some real motorsport experience. As a Tech Graduation of the School of Engineering and Science Department of Ca State LA I have a lot of CAD experience with engineering background, some motorsports experience and a ASE Cert auto Mechanic so I am decent with a wrench. I still have a lot to learn and I will send my resume ASAP.

Thanks,
Charles
