On May 21 and 22 near the outskirts of Sydney, Australia at the Eastern Creek Raceway the guys at Superlap Australia will be hosting the first ever World Time Attack Challenge. The title sponsor of the event is Advan/Yokohama, but the event is also supported by Wynn's and Hi Octane Racing. From what I remember, Wynn's is a chemical company that sold fuel additives, cleaners, etc. here in America in the 80's. I guess they've made a comeback elsewhere in the world. Anyhow, this should be an exciting event. Here are some of the confirmed cars so far are (click on the images for specs and details on each car):

Sun Automotive Cyber EVO - Japan:

Pan Speed RX7 (FD) - Japan:

Cusco Tomei Impreza STi (GD) - Japan:

Sierra Sierra EVO8 - USA:

APC Racing EVO 8 MR - Australia:

Advan Hi-Octane Racing Skyline GT-R (BNR-34) - Ausralia:

Cricket Wireless NSX -USA

Tilton Interiors EVO 9 - Australia

I believe there are discussions with some of the British Time Attack teams going on. It really wouldn't be a "world" event unless you had the Brits there now would it?

From what I've heard some of the more arrogant teams in Japan pretty much laughed at the idea. That's too fucking bad they don't have the balls to come out and show the world how fast they are if you ask me. More cars are being confirmed and will be added to the list as the news spreads. Is Time Attack big enough so that there needs to be an event with entrants from all over the world? Probably not, but this event will be very exciting regardless.

What are the organizers going to do about the different safety regulations and parts rules among the different countries? I'm sure there will be some Japanese and American rules that don't crossover to Australian rules. Some examples off the top of my head are: a car can have an aluminum roll cage in Japan and a car can have full slicks in America. I'm guessing the British and Australian rules are probably FIA based so there won't be too many issues. It seems Japan, Australia, and the UK have similar tire rules. Anyhow, check the Superlap Australia website for participant updates and event details.

ADDED 1/18/10: I had an email discussion with Ian from Superlap where he explained how all of the cars will be examined case by case for their application of CAMS safety regulations. CAMS is the Australian motorsport governing body. For the most part, the professionally built cars that are built to FIA and/or SCCA rules should have no problems passing CAMS regulations. We also discussed tires. There will be no slicks or grooved "DOT " slicks (e.g. Hankook C91, Hoosier R8/A8, etc.) allowed. The only tires allowed are "R" compound treaded tires that must be commercially available so that any team can purchase them. In fact, tires will all be provided by the Yokohama truck (if the team will be running Yoks). One team will be running Dunlops provided from the local Dunlop motorpsport dealer in Sydney. In fact, here's a list of the legal tires:

Bridgestone RE540S, RE55

Continental Conti Competition C1

Dunlop Formula R, Formula 901, Formula W10, SP Super Sport Race

Federal 595 RSR, FZ201

Hoosier Street TD

Hankook Ventus (the list does not specify model)

Kumho Ecsta V700, V70A

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup, TB15

Ohtsu Falken Azenis, Azenis RT215

Pirelli P Zero C, P Zero Corsa

Silverstone FTZ Sport Type RR, S575, S585

Toyo Proxes RA-1, Proxes R888, Trampio R881

Yokohama A021R, A032R, A038R, A039R, A048R, A050

Andrew is really good at voice overs isn't he? BTW that was me in the chrome dome protector straw fishing hat and Cosworth T-shirt for .0013 seconds.

Yeah I heard the news a while ago; I can't wait for the race!
I think that the Cyber EVO could go faster if:
1. Weld in a proper roll cage with gussets.
2. Get a sequential gear box of some kind.
3. Get real coilovers (Tein SR don't count).
I heard that there are few more spots available.....am I right?
I think Holly Clark, Fontana Nissan and AMS Performance should fill in the spots.......

Ok, saw the Editor's forum. Thanks for making life just a little bit easier.

JDMized: the Cyber EVO does have a welded in roll cage with gussets. In case you didn't know, the Cyber EVO is on its second CT9A unibody. The one in competition now is not the previous chassis you may have seen in here in the US. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSiNZQ0LVqk&feature=youtu.be&a and watch 3:13 and on. You'll see the cage is gusseted almost everywhere. True sequential transmissions for AWD cars are only really seen in WRC. Transmissions, shifters, and the controllers are upwards of $150,000 so you probably will not see sequential transmissions in AWD time attack cars.

Sorry Eric, but I saw the Cyber EVO in person at Tsukuba last year. The cage was a joke (with a cage like that, the chassis must flex like a noodle).......I haven't seen it since then, so maybe like you said with the new chassis, they beefed it up a bit.
The a-pillar had no gusset to the main beam, nor did the b pillar. There was no even an X bar in the b pillar section.
The X bars in the front doors were very unsafe.
Take a look at the HKS EVO CT230R's side impact bars in this feature for example....you tell me:

Most Japanese tuning companies have no clue how to weld in a proper cage....sorry. (although they kick ass on everything else).

Oh I'm not saying the Cyber EVO's cage is badass. All I'm saying is that the cage does in fact have gussets. The reality is, whether safe or not, is that it is a time attack car. It is not designed for fender to fender racing. It is designed to be on the track alone and do nothing else but kick fucking ass for 2 laps. Technically, it only has to kick fucking ass for one lap. So light is fine in my book.

BTW, here are some more detailed shots of the HKS car's cage (and the car itself): http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/tabid/59/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/1062/HKS-CT230R-EVO--Up-Close-and-Personal.aspx

The HKS cage is still very basic, but definitely more thorough than the Cyber EVO's.

I agree, the HKS EVO's cage is a bit more thought-out than the Cyber EVO and the Tomei/ Voltex blue Subaru.
What I've understood from Mike (Kojima) after talking to him about Japanese tuning companies and their philosophy behind cages, was that the stiffer the chassis is, the "easier" is to dial in the suspension, as the chassis flexes a lot less. It's also much more predictable that a chassis that flexes over bumps.
Having a cage that is not optimal and allows the chassis to flex, causes headaches to the suspension guys when it's time to tune properly the coilovers, camber, caster, toe. (I wasn't talking only for protection sake...)
Anyway, I have no right to say what's right or wrong, as I'm not a professional racecar driver. I just hope each team tune their car to their full potential to see a really good fucking race. (I hope no "DNF" on the chart).

Eric,

When you say the Cyber Evo is onto its 2nd CT9A unibody, what do you mean? Originally it was a 7, is it still a 7 with a different kit or is it a completely different car?

BTW what model number is it? 7, 8 or 9?
