MotoIQ Project Aprilia SR50

Project Aprilia SR50: 100 MPG Madness Part 2, Engine Internals

By Mike Kojima

In our last edition of Project SR50, we had reached the limits of simple bolt on modifications which left us with a nicely running Scooter, capable of just over 50 mph with acceleration good enough to keep up with traffic and 115 mpg. With more time, we are really taking a liking to the refined Aprilia SR50, which rides, handles and brakes better than any scooter in this displacement category. We also like its sporty looks. The SR50 is the king of urban commuter scooters and we are going to take it to the next level.

Nissan Silvia S16?

Merry Christmas From Nissan!  New S16 Silvia?  Oh God We Hope Not!

MotoIQ Staff Report

It is rumored that the new S16 Silvia will be front engine and rear drive which is good but it will be powered by a 1.8 liter turbocharged engine with a class trailing power output of 200 hp.  Come on Nissan, with a turbo you gotta do better than that.  It has been our contention that Nissan has forgotten how to build a proper 4 cylinder engine ever since the demise of the SR20DE and its variants.

Summer Road Trip: Siliver State Classic Part 2

Summer Road Trip: Silver State Classic Part 2

By Mike Kojima and Annie Sam

As the Silver State Classic is in all classes except for the Unlimited Class, a high speed TSD rally, it is critical to stay as close as possible to the class target average speed for the win. Of course this is harder in the higher speed classes.

Best engineered cars of lemons 3 - the angry hamster

The Best-Engineered Cars of LeMons - #3: The Angry Hamster.

By Dave Coleman

At 1400 lbs and 116 hp, the Angry Hamster has the power/weight ratio of an S2000. It packs a mid-mounted, 10,000-rpm V4 engine mated to a 6-speed sequential dog box, and puts its power down through a limited-slip diff. Weight distribution is a dead-even 50/50, and the wheelbase is nearly a foot shorter than a Lotus Elise's. And all of it was built for $449.

24 Hours of LeMons Thunderhill Arse-Freeze-Apalooza '09

By Annie Sam

In this segment, I will detour you from our regularly scheduled program to bring you a little adventure known as the 24 Hours of LeMons from the perspective of Project Racer at their most recent event which took place, the LeMons Thunderhill Arse-Freeze-Apalooza '09. Like the other 158 crazies that showed up to this event, having this race take place the weekend before Thanksgiving didn't stop us from trekking nine hours across the state to participate in this event.

Aprila SR50 Project bike

Project Aprilia SR50: 100 mpg Madness Part 1, Basic Bolt on Stuff

By Mike Kojima

Our new two wheel project is a very unique machine; it is an Aprilia SR50, perhaps the highest tech scooter on the market. It uses a full of tech, Orbital engine to combine the compactness and power of a two stroke engine with the fuel economy and low emissions of a tiny four stroke. The Aprilia engine uses licensed Orbital technology which is basically An ECU controlled, directly injected, stratified charge two stroke. Two strokes by nature produce pretty low NOX emissions due to their low operating cylinder pressures but are terrible for hydrocarbons as they tend to blow raw fuel out the exhaust port on overlap.

Robispec Badass 370z street class time attack car

Robispec’s Street Class Time Attack Nissan 370Z, Simple is Better?

By Mike Kojima, photos by Jeff Naeyaert

Robispec is a Southern California tuning shop whose specialty is a rather unusual one. Instead of the typical shop in search of speed via the quest for more and more power, Robispec’s game is increasing lateral G’s, of the cornering kind. The proprietor of Robispec is Robert Fuller or Robi, one of our favorite people. Robi is always willing to lend a hand or give advice to whatever project we have asked him, either formally as in our Project EVO IX or by helping us swing wrenches at the track. Robi is on our short list of people we call for help if we have a problem that needs solving.

About six weeks ago we got a call from Robi telling us he would have something special, a Nissan 370Z he was building for the SEMA show and the annual Source Interlink Super Lap Battle. As there has been a lack of serious Nissan 370Z parts development due probably to its sluggish sales, we eagerly awaited checking out what Robi could cook up in short order.

Dai Yoshihara's GT Channel Nissan 350Z time attack car

Dai Yoshihara’s Two Week Wonder, GT Channel’s Time Attack Nissan 350Z

By Mike Kojima

Pro Drifter and Formula D ace Dai Yoshihara is used to working on tight deadlines. Perhaps you have read our story on his 8 day wonder S13 that we covered in detail. To tell this story, and appreciate it, you have to rewind to a week before the 2009 SEMA show. Dai got the request from his long time supporters, The GT Channel to build one of their show cars into a time attack car for Source Interlink's 2009 Super Lap Battle Finals. The folks at the GT channel had a Nissan 350Z roadster that had been originally built as a SEMA show car two years ago, it had been gathering dust and the GT Channel wanted to do something with it. Dai was contacted and a deal was struck to give him the car to build into a time attack car.
