You would have thought the drama ended with Sebastien Loeb's eighth straight WRC championship but the hits just kept on coming days after Rally Great Britain and, indeed, the season was over. Talk about Silly Season!

WRC Rally GB: Now The Epilogue

Like a great sunset, the Wales Rally Great Britain is continuing long after the event is over. The quick headline is this: Ford driver Jari-Matti latvala won the battle in Wales and Citroen driver Sebastien Loeb won the 2011 World Rally Championship. It was Loeb's eighth straight. Think about that for a minute.  There'll be a quiz later.

Without question Latvala was among the fastest if not the fastest in the championship at the end of the season. We talked about a three act drama in the last three events of the year in France, Spain and Great Britain. Latvala had as much to do with the results in all three events as anyone else even though he only won in Great Britain. He surrendered podium spots in France and Spain to teammate Mikko Hirvonen who was battling Loeb for the title. Finishing issues earlier in the season hammered his title hopes. Laatvala received only ten points from four mid-season events in Sardegna, Argentina, Greece and Germany.  There are only 13 events on the calendar so throwing away a third of the season makes it hard to fight for a title at the end of the season. Think about that for a minute. There'll be a quiz later.

But what really shocked the WRC community on Wednesday at the Citroen year ending news conference had been rumored for weeks. Citroen announced that Mikko Hirvonen and his co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen would be joining the big red machines in 2012 and 2013. To me this is from the "If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em Department." Hirvonen and Lehtinen lost the WRC title to Loeb and  his co-driver daniel Elena in 2009 and, now, 2011. Neither was pretty. Hirvonen, in fact, lost the 2009 championship by ONE point after leading the championship at the last event in Great Britain. To make matters worse, the loss was helped by a  hood pin that came loose blocking Hirvonen's vision and giving the rally's next to last stage win to Loeb. On the last stage Loeb turned up the wick and took the title from Mikko's mits. It wasn't pretty. That was in 2009.

This year was different. Hirvonen needed to make up eight points in the UK. And  you might argue he was on his way when a sway off course allowed a tree limb to puncture the radiator on Hirvonen's Ford Fiesta. He got to the end of the stage but had to retire on the morning of the second day in the four day event. With Hirvonen gone, the title was Loeb. But on the morning of the last day, while Sebastien was trying to keep up with the blazing pace from Latvala, he ran into a spectator who was driving on the wrong side of the narrow road being used to travel from one stage to the next. The head-on collision took Loeb out of the event giving Latvala a near four minute victory. Now, imagine if Hirvonen was still in it when Loeb had to retire. No matter what Latvala did, Mikko would have been sipping the champagne at rally's end and not Sebastien. On such twists of fate is history usually written.

Here's one of your quiz questions: Does this mean Loeb is vulnerable as he goes after a NINTH straight title next year?  Let's pause for a minute here. American race fans are all agog over Jimmie Johnson's Five-in-a-Row streak in NASCAR Sprint Cup. That's amazing to be sure but Johnson does his business on basically one kind of track in one kind of country in the best of atmospheric conditions.  Loeb, on the other hand, competes on all kinds of tracks in all kinds of countries in all kinds of atmospheric conditions. He must  even compete in conditions where the road itself changes from car to car. The guy who's first on the road sees a different road than the guy who's second, second sees something different than third and so on.

If I would have told you that the man Mikko Hirvonen chased  for the WRC title in 2009 AND 2011 would be his teammate next year, you'd still be laughing. But you'd have to apologize because that came true this week.

At the end of  the year, though, the fastest man chasing Sebastien Loeb was Hirvonen's teammate Jari-Matti Latvala who strapped something on and ruled Rally Great Britain. Ford thinks he's ready for a title chase of his own next year.

On the Mikko move to Citroen, do you believe it was more of a move to the winning side or else a move to prevent teaming up with a potentially troublemaking new team mate (Ogier), or both, even?

Loeb will retire from auto racing as a rally driver. I don't think his driving style will adapt well in wheel-to-wheel tarmac racing.
Maybe he'll join Rallycross for a few seasons or something.
The top most level of athleticism usually involves a very finely-honed skill set. I don't see how the kind of mental awareness you aspire to in rally could easily be fulfilled in any other motorsport.
I agree though, if he does move to anything on-tarmac it'll be endurance racing

Ford needs to hire Petter Solberg. That man deserves a factory drive.
I have a feeling Ogier will have problems getting a ride next year, and I'm not even talking a factory car. I'm saying any car.

BTW... great article, I've been a WRC fan for as long as I can remember. Long before Loeb, who I can't wait to see move on from WRC. Make room in the sport for the new kids.

Yea, I was a huge WRC fan in the days of Gronholm, Burns, Sainz, Makinen, etc all contending for the titles.
It literally was Loeb from out of nowhere in the early 2000's.
He's got mechanical skill now. It's almost like he expects the win too.

Guys thanks for stopping by!

1) I think the move from Ford to Citroen came when Hirvonen reached the end of his contract and needed to know where he'd be driving next. Ford and M-Sport are still working out their relationship into the horizon from what I'm told.

2) Loeb in Rallycross seems unlikely. You need a different mindset for rallycross and that includes an aggression that Loeb has yet to show. He'll knock you out with two jabs and a hook. Rallycross people can drop you with one right hand. Either way you're done, I guess.

3) Loeb does, however, have the finesse to drive sports cars. His discipline on tarmac is already well documented. McRae figured out Le Mans in two laps. Loeb might do it in two corners.

4) Petter deserved a factory drive five years ago. Now he just deserves a sponsor. Petter has tested with Oreca and did well. Maybe he should lead Loeb to Le Mans.

5) Loeb does expect to win. Winners are like that. With Hirvonen in place to take points from everyone else, Loeb might win the next two unless Latvala inserts himself into the conversation. And I think Jari-Matti might go that!

In the meantime, just enjoy history. One day you'll always remember how it was when Loeb rewrote the records.

Thanks Tim. Both the WRC and the IRC offer dramatic motor racing competition. I just wish rally fans all over the world could tap into this historic run by Loeb. We'll all remember where we were these years when he changed the sport for all of us.

GRiP_DRIVER: I've been thinking about your comment that Ogier won't find a ride for next year. On the surface that's hard to believe. Five wins in 13 events is hard to ignore even if you're in the strongest car with the strongest driver ever. But right now the major salaried drives are with the factories. Citroen is set. Mini appears set. Like I mentioned in the article both Ogier and Ford would throw gas on a fire to hire Ogier there. He might work at Stobart. He might work at some other satellite team although Citroen already has Solberg's team and doesn't seem to care about it. My first reaction was that you were off base but there may not be a seat for him to get paid until VW comes on line. Maybe VW can hide him in a Skoda for a season. I don't know if Ogier has the money or support to start a team but having him on the sidelines is a black eye for the WRC and, in my opinion, motorsports in general. But that's my Jones for the moment!

As "promised(!)" Sébastien Ogier has been signed as the first official Volkswagen driver for the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The 27-year-old Frenchman and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia (31) are joining the Volkswagen Motorsport squad effective immediately. Ogier will perform his first run as a Volkswagen factory driver at the Race Of Champions in Düsseldorf on December 3 and 4, being pitted against the other "Super Seb” from Formula One.

Thanks for sticking around! Pretty crazy, huh?! And imagine the arrogance of the copywriter on that website or the VW release to insert Ogier in the Super Seb category when there's Vettel and Loeb already there. It'll be a great year when VW is finally up and running. Even some good runs next year when VW is in a Skoda.

And, yes, Ford will be there. The contract with M-Sport needs to be finished and whoever's in the second car may need to bring some "support" to the program, but the WRC will include a Ford team. The real scare is Latvala's contract. It's up next year and I think it's with M-Sport and not Ford. Lots of talking yet to be done!

Yeap, I'm sure Malcolm Wilson is feeling pressure breathing on the back of his neck. He has to come up with some results, soon.
Gone are the days he could get his son a car in his team.

It will be a great season starting with Monte Carlo right on the top of the schedule in January. Maybe North One TV can figure out how to get some television for us like Eurosport does for the IRC. And hopefully that can get to the US some kind of way either streamed or on some obscure cable channel quicker than six weeks later.

In the meantime, here's hoping that Ford and M-Sport can resolve whatever's holding up that announcement.

I haven't heard anything. But there's a lot doing on in the background. First the FIA has delayed the "registration" of teams one week to December 19th. That was supposed to happen Monday but the issues with the North One ownership have delayed things. I'd bet there's also an effort from the FIA to keep Ford in the mix. Registration is when the participating team owners must declare the teams that'll run for manufacturer's points. The issue now, though, might be Ford's rumored interest in turning it's program toward the IRC and moving away from the WRC. I think that's what's holding up the talks with M-Sport. It might be a corporate decision at Ford to change philosophies to the media driven IRC.

It doesn't help that the WRC is going through some problems with the company that owns North One, the rights holder. CSI is going through some bankruptcy issues. The FIA and North One say the CSI problems won't affect the WRC but... that's the reason they're giving for delaying the registration 'til the 19th. I hope that's clear.

Word is also on Ott Tanak to become Latvalla's team mate. Well, the dead line is just around the corner, so let's hope Ford keeps the WRC effort, whichever the driver setup.

Must have been the poll on my website! Great news that Ford is back in the WRC and Solberg is there. Now Petter has the opportunity to do for Latvala what Makinen did for him in 2003. Petter is fast but Latvala has emerged as the man to beat. If he gets off to a good start it will be a GREAT championship run against Loeb. Hopefully Solberg will be there to show Jari-Matti how to get it done. Wouldn't it be ironic that the last man to win the WRC title not named Loeb will be there when the next man not named Loeb becomes a champion?

Indeed.
I'm not that sure that Petter still has what it takes to be both fast and consistent in order to push for the title, but is a favourite amongst a large hord of fans and its always nice to know that the WRC is keeping such an important pilot.

Also great to know Ford's sticking around to give Citroen a run for it's money.
Lattvala already crashed testing, but hey, ots the special stages that count, so fingers crossed.

I'm not sure Petter would agree but that's why he was a champion once. I think he still believes he can be a champion again. And that's fair. Maybe he can. But you're probably right. His window might be closed thanks to Loeb's run. I'd really like to see him teach Latvala how to win a championship. Makinen did it for him at Subaru almost ten years ago. Hopefully there won't be any problems when the team orders are handed down.
