Global Time Attack Round 3 - The Chicago Recap

By Wes Dumalski

Photography by Connor Harrison

Let's get something straight.... I am not a professional journalist nor do I play one on TV, hell I didn't even stay in some second rate hotel's third rate counterpart last night. The reality is that I am just a dork that appreciates fast cars that turn both left and right. This trait coupled with my mediocre social skills afforded me the opportunity to cover the 3rd round of the Global Time Attack series this past weekend in Chicago Illinois. Unless you have been the victim of blunt force head trauma lately, you likely are aware that Global Time Attack is one of the newest time attack sanctioning bodies. What may not be realized is that with the recent announcement by Redline to cancel it's remaining 2010 events GTA has moved in to the limelight as the sports premier organization.

After having attended many other time attack and trial events it was obvious to me that the people behind GTA are quite simply the MOST passionate about the sport. Having had the opportunity to be a fly on the wall all weekend, I was able to witness first hand where their priorities lie and let me be the first to say; they are certainly in the right place! GTA puts the teams and fans FIRST. They offer SERIOUS accolades and pay out real $$$ for the top finishers and I certainly wouldn't mind finishing third at one of their events to claim the steak knives and off label beer! And for the fans they feature a live stream of every event as well as an on-site car show that ALSO pays out $. Seriously, had I known we would have parked in the car show just for a chance at some of the $ and prizes.

Insert trippy music and spiraling vortex of tie dye.... Let's backtrack to the end of last week Wednesday when towards the end of MotoIQ radio our own Will Cannady was getting ready to wrap up the show when he received a call in from a "dodgy brit"... none other than Mike Warfield from GST. The call was to discuss some of the upcoming expectations for the Team's efforts at GTA Chicago and since Mike is not known for beating around the bush, overall records were called out. In fact there were high expectations for the entire weekend, from GST to Professional Awesome looking to beat their previous record, to the debut of the FWING 2.0 from Chris Rado and the World Racing crew

GST contemplates strategy for the day as Westphal supervises.

This years Chicago event was held at the Autobahn Country Club's South circuit. it is a 2.1 mile 15 turn road course that has proven to be somewhat technical and rewards mechanical grip over raw horsepower. Those were words that seemed to be the buzz around the paddock after the competitor's Saturday morning shakedown runs and having ran there several times in Project 200SX I would have to agree. One thing that the teams seemed to be adjusting for were the bumpy areas of the track and after coming off of an event held at New Jersey Motorsports Park they may have found themselves surprised if they started off with car setups from the previous event.

The first session of the morning proved to be a test and tune for those that were unfamiliar with the track while mid-west local Ryan Gates blasted around the course. In fact Ryan's fastest time for Saturday was posted in the first session of the day, a testament to his knowledge of the circuit and how to get around it quickly. Ryan posted up the 3rd fastest time of the weekend in his Limited AWD EVO X with a 1:30.692. Ryan has run some 4+ seconds faster here in testing however this was Ryan's first time out with the car in some time. We look forward to seeing more of Ryan as his EVO X is always hauling ass. In fact not all of the 15 cars were out for the first session. One of my personal favorite teams, Professional Awesome, had unseated a head gasket on their Street AWD class Evo VII when tuning the car for the event. In typical PA style they thrashed on the car to get the gasket fixed only to grenade 4th gear just before departure. They frantically searched for a trans. and got it installed and made it to Autobahn to race for the weekend! The World Racing Scion came out of the trailer early in the morning looking largely uncompleted, I personally wondered if the car would even move under it's own power during the race weekend...

We were pleased to see Ryan Gates back on the circuit after an extended absence. His EVO X was looking clean in the paddock and fast on the track. I much prefer the car with the vinyl wrap removed.

Walking around the GTA pits after session 1 it was clear that some of the teams were adjusting. GST's "untamed soccer star" Jeff Westphal described the course as "bumpy" (among other adjectives). It was clear the Impreza was not setup to handle the less than perfect surface at Autobahn. Because the GST Impreza travelled in the World Racing rig for the mid-west event, they were limited in the spares they could bring. No shit nearly EVERYTHING they brought for the race weekend fit INSIDE the Impreza. These guys are hardcore and they didn't let their lack of spares stop them. Having softer spring rates would have been the ideal change to make on the G Sled, however not having them resulted in Mike and crew lowering the can pressure in the dampers. Would that really work though?

Jeff W- "Holy Sh!@ it's bumpy" - Mike W "How do we fix that?" - Jeff W "Go to another track?"...

TurninConcepts goes through the car before the days action unfolds.

I'm very confused with the new FWING... I see a Procharger sticker on it? They're running a blower now?

As for the GST Impreza, holy vented hood!

The GST Impreza got shorter... Must have been fun trying to stuff the same spares into it that once fit in the car before it lost a few inches.
Is the old FWING retired? Where is the AWD car? That Rado guy is always doing something.
It's refreshing to see a good ol' pre-strut-era Honda kicking ass. I still miss my old H car because of the double front setup in a light FWD car. I bet that car is a blast to drive with 240hp and what looks like a healthy diet too.
Thanks for the coverage!

@ OMG its Weasel: what do you mean it got shorter? I know they chopped the roof, what else did they do to the chassis?

I think "that Rado guy"...lol got mom and pop helping him out thru World Racing....

@ Khiem
It is turbo! They are using 2 massive Procharger BOV's.

@Eric
Scary HUH? Any idea if Dennis and SSE will be running any TA events before the end of the year?

@ Weasel
The Civic kicked serious arse! Super fast around the track. After talking with Aaron next year they will be using a new chassis with a full cage. I look forward to that build!

Rado's car is set up to be pitch sensitive which renders the rear diffuser ineffective. Maybe Andrew will see this and say more. They have to work on proper attitude and then platform control.

Great pictures and write-up!

Anyone know what the status is of the AWD WorldRacing tC? Haven't seen or heard anything about the car for quite some time (2010 SLB I think....)

Autobahn certainly is a "grip limited" track. And God forbid there is ANY moisture at ALL on the track. I swear that track has the worst drainage of any track I've ever been to in North America. And I've hosted events where it has rained from St. Louis, to Montreal, to New Jersey, to Buttonwillow, AutoClub and Willow Springs. Hell, even Infineon in the 100-year storm drained SO much better than AutoBahn.... Ugh.

Happy to see momentum building for GTA! Someone needed to step in and take the reigns from RTA, and the guys at GTA are the best suited for the task. I just hope the enthusiasts get off their butts and support the GTA events. 16-car fields aren't gonna get it done. It would be disgraceful if those in the MidWest and East don't support GTA. But on a super positive note it was good to hear John say they are looking for a full field of cars for Infineon!! :-)

We were actually having a discussion on timeattackforums and were talking about how GTA had really stepped up. I'm hoping to join in the fun next year, once my car's buttoned up.

...we also talked about RTA shot themselves in the food and screwed the competitors ;)

JDMized: The roof is all i noticed, was it chopped prior to this event and I just didn't notice?

Wes: I hope they dont go too far into the MY1999+ Civic. There were a few years of that model civic near the end of the generation (iirc the 1999-2000), that came equipped with struts up front. I sure hope they stick with the same double arm front setup. Struts on Hondas are for hellaflush artards.
I can't wait to get out west to actually start going to these events.

Wes - Great coverage (props to Connor on the pictures)! Last night and this has been a great look into Time Attack for a lot of people looking in and fun for those of us that like it :) Last night you'd mentioned your hope to see more of the enthusiast level for the "stock"/street tire cars (my hope as well) for GTA but John has said he still wants to keep it at a "higher level" clientele. I DO like that some of the "street" tire class cars actually looked streetable with no roll bars in there.

Weasel, GTA seems to not be abaondoning the east coast like RTA did. See NJMP and the Autobahn races. Have cross continental races for a small series like this seems to be a burden for small teams and thus the sport's growth. The idea of having east and west coast conferences with a year ending show down (think MLB and the world series) has been tossed around with good feeback.

@Rockwood: Autobahn is VERY flat.. but it is the job of the engineer and track designer, to design into the track, proper water drainage. Autobahn has the worst of any track I've ever been to.

@Micah: Those discussions about RTA have been around for quite some time. However, it's time to stop dwelling on the past, and for supporters of time attack to step up, and support the sport and the organizers. I'd hate to see a lack of support play a factor in any sort of setbacks to GTA. Spread the word, show up to the events (whether you have a car to race or not), chat about the events, talk about them on the forums, hype them up. GTA is doing their part, the supporters and fans need to do theirs.

Unlimited GT FF
1: Aaron Byram – Pure Tuning Honda Civic – 1:31.628

THAT... is what I like to see. A FF whoppin' a$$ even on the AWD guys placing in the top 5. And forget about the RWD people, what a waste of money! FWD honda spankin' on a Z06 ! Going faster with less money, that is a beatiful thing. Lol! Nice coverage Wes!! Long live the FF's!!
PS I'm rockin my MotoIQ shirt. Thanks Martin! Nerd Alliance rules!!

It is great to see Ryan Gates back!
@ Weasel
2001+ for Civics is when they started using the Mcstrut design.
1992-2000 Civics is double wishbone front and multi link rear.
Because the rear gains a lot of camber when lowered on a 92-00 Civic, it is funny to see these hella tards with a 3+ in drop and 4+ degrees of negative camber.

Sadly even 92-00 Civic owners are guilty of having the flush this, slammed that attitude. Which is appalling when you consider how well designed the cars are.
@sr20
That Pure Tuning Civic moves : )

Yes those "street" tire class is very appealing as its something that I can relate to.

I understand GTA's ideal for their series. The BEST in time attack battling it out. The does not leave a lot of room for enthusiast cars that are nearly stock but this is for a good reason. Here are my thoughts on the matter.

1. Enthusiast level cars typically have NOTHING but OEM level safety gear. Leaving them incredibly exposed to a safety issue.

2. GTA is currently partnered with NASA where thay have one session that they split in to two shorter sessions. When GTA fills up they will have SUPER FAST cars with PROPER safety gear in both sessions.

3. Combine points 1 and 2 and you get point 3.... Super fast cars with proper safety gear does not mix well with stock level cars with NO safety gear (aside from helmet).

The reality is that until GTA grows to be able to have the track exclusively you are best suited to run NASA HPDE or TT ;)

My comment about running in NASA was strictly limited to those looking to be competitive or for a class of cars that are STOCK or close too. Then again in ANY class of motorsport running a nearly stock car on street tires may not be very competitive at all especially since NASA permits R comps...

Mr Time Attack:
The talks have been going on for years, really starting at the end of 08. Never implied a lack of supporting the sport. This year I couldn't make NJMP because of work and well drive 10 hours just to spectate is a bit costly ;)
I still supported RTA, until they stopped showing up on this coast.

I do love seeing that civic whoop up on some people.

Those are good points.
I overlooked one crucial thing, is that they all share the track.

Excellent coverage and a great event (except for the rain). The rain was really a spoiler as I know many teams had time left on the table.
Talking with Jason from GTA, they are very passionate about the sport and building their events. After talking with him I wanted to make the 37 hr. haul to Infineon in November. We will see.
