A Look Inside - K&N’s Super Unlimited Infiniti G35 Circuit Battle Slayer
by Mike Kojima
We have been witness this year to the sheer power and speed of the K&N Infiniti G35 driven by Paul Brown, which is currently tied for second place in Redline's Pro Track Challenge. What is unusual about this G35 is that it is a corporate car owned and constructed by K&N as an in house engineering effort. Usually cars like this are regulated to dressing up the floor at the SEMA show then making rounds at car shows but in K&N’s case it is heartening to see the car out on the track kicking ass and taking names!

What is inside this winning car? Follow us and let’s take a close look inside. The heart of any competitive track car is the suspension and the K&N G35 has the right stuff. Remote reservoir JRZ 2-way motor sports shocks fitted with Eibach ERS race springs have independent adjustment of compression and rebound damping. There is a reason why JRZ’s are becoming more common in Time Attack and road racing, they flat out work well.

| In this view of the rear suspension you can see the K&N in house built suspension links giving full adjustability, the Speedway Engineering tubular racing swaybars and the K&N modified subframe with adjustable roll center. The rear roll center and camber curve are adjusted by moving the lower link pivot into one of these three holes. |
Tubular Speedway engineering race type sway bars are used on the front and rear of the car. These bars are highly adjustable and the center torsion tubes can be switched out with ones of different wall thickness for even more tuning flexibility. Stillen adjustable front upper arms are used to provide camber adjustment while all of the rear multiple suspension links have been replaced with K&N in house fabricated spherical bearing equipped custom modified links to get rid of slop and to allow greater adjustability.

Great-well thought out race car. Thumbs up to the K&N team and I wish them luck for the rest of the season. Mike, a small correction, the Volk wheels are actually the TE37SL (Super Light, which are 400 grams lighter than the regular TE37, while mantaining the same strength as the older ones). Thanks for sharing it.

What an awesome car! It's nice to see large companies get involved in something like this. Is that a reverse lockout on the shifter extension?

That is a sweet piece of machinery!

Thanks JDMized, got that all fixed up. The Super Laps are indeed lighter weight and even more baller than regular TE37 models :)

Their AEM EMS uses Honda OBDII connectors. I wonder what the part number is on it and how they programmed the control unit to read the cam phasing for variable valve timing. Also, the cage doesn't appear to gusseted to the chassis with dimple died sheet metal. Wonder why this is?

Paul Brown and his crew are a great group of guys. Some of the nicest guys you'll find at any racetrack. Also, the car is ALWAYS that clean, even between sessions! A clean car is easy to work on and easy to trouble shoot for leaks, etc. A nice engineer touch with the little air deflector/flip-up addied to the Seibon CF good to help extract more air out. And the that sub-frame in the trunk that the wing/trunk sit on; no worries about a wing/trunk failure there!

Oh, the K&N guys rock! Super nice and they appreciate those of us who believe in their products. I just had to go over to them in AZ at Redline to let them know how great a product they made. They were nice but very busy. There was a lot of sorting for the car that weekend. That door made me laugh everytime it would open and shimmy like paper in the wind :) Great inside look, as usual Mike! Jeff, those suspension shots are amazing! Mike - The t56 is a good tranny but, from my understanding, you want to get an 03 and newer if you want the better sychros. The double overdrive can range from. 63 to as low as .50 and there are multiple output spline options as well. I suggested the option to Chuck for his land speed record, but it might be to heavy for that app. It would be a very cool meeting of the domestic tranny to beautiful VQ power house. Oh, and I love how this season of Circuit Battles is an LS/VQ showdown :) Love it!

@Fly'n_Z: not a problem. Below are a bunch of pics about the G35 for those of you that are interested. Some of these pics have been taken at Fontana, and some others at Buttonwillow last year. Such a well designed car. It appears to be designed well with ergonomics; ease of servicing/adjustability in mind. @spdracerut I'm quite surprised to see a AEM EMS with Honda connectors as well.

great write up.

Gorgeous car. Sounds mean as hell to boot. Question tho. Was this built out of dara's old g35 chassis, the one with the crazy k&n Phoenix airbrushed on the hood?

econobox- K&N owns the intake side of AEM plus MP tuning used to be an AEM engineer to answer your question about the ECU. I was poking around this car at RTA Fontana this year and it is really well put together. Would love to see it out at SLB in Nov...

@jamal Thanks!

I saw this out at willow springs and honestly the flat black paint made it look really dirty and really took away from other aspects of the car. I'd love to see them re shoot it in a basic white or something with more personality. It might of been the fastest car out there but as a product showcase its lacking in appearance. The Berk BMW, the spoon type r and the Fontana Z all had a much better appearance and as a marketing tool were much more effective.
