The Road to Abu Dhabi Part One - Mission Impossible
By Mike Kojima
A few weeks ago Formula D Team Falken ace Dai Yoshihara got an invitation to participate in a Formula D expansion event in none other than exotic Abu Dhabi the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The event will be held at the World Class Yas Marina Circuit, a world class F-1 approved facility on February 25th 2011.

| The supercharger kit was hopelessly outclassed for a Pro Drift Competition. It also put a lot of weight far over the front end. |
 |
| The old HKS supercharger kit, although a very nice kit for a mild streetable boost of about 40 whp was not anywhere close to the power needed for Pro Drifting. It was replaced by a GTI Technical Innovatons modified Jim Wolf Technology twin turbo kit. |
 |
| Dai prefers the feel of either a tightly shimmed two way LSD diff or a spool so lacking time to procure an LSD we opted to weld the spider gears in a stock R200 differential to turn it into a spool. |
 |
| The 350Z is all deconstructed and read for the conversion to begin. The only thing we will be keeping is the mocked up Baller Bolts oil cooler. |
The idea of taking part in an event in such an exciting part of the world at a top motorsports facility and getting paid for it all was very intriguing. Some of the other Formula D pros that were participating were Tanner Foust, Fredric Aasbo, Chris Forsberg, Darren McNamara, Ryan Tuerck, Mike Essa and Mad Mike Whiddett.

| Burns Stainless provided the mandrel bent aluminum tubing to fabricate the charge piping from. |
 |
| Burns Stainless also provided the 304 stainless tubing, U bends and V-Band clamps needed to fabricate the exhaust system. We decided to go with 3" downpipes going into a 4" single exhaust for minimal weight. |
 |
| V-band clamps were used at many points to make the exhaust fast to disassemble for easy track side maintenance. |
 |
| Burns also supplied these specialty 304 stainless parts to build a really trick exhaust system. Oval shaped piping for tight areas around the rear end, a merged collector for bringing the down pipes together, 3" to 4" transitions for the downpipes, O2 sensor bungs and 4" round to oval transitions. These parts make fabricating an elaborate exhaust system much easier. |
 |
| Look at the smooth internal transitions of the Burns Collector, metal art! |

Impressive. JWT cams can only imagine how the VQ sounds now!

Does this car use any sort of differential cooler?
Friday, January 07, 2011 5:04 AM
What's been done to the bottom end of the motor? I heard those stock internals don't like boost.

Steve, it has a spool which doesn't generate much heat compared to a clutch type LSD. It really should run a diff cooler when doing time attack, we monitor the diff temps closely with temp labels and IR pyrometer when at the track until we can get a cooler on it. Drift runs are normally too short for temp to be a problem. Dusty, The VQ Rev Up engine is pretty strong and we are going to push it to the max!

@Mike Is this car still running a PFC brake setup?
Friday, January 07, 2011 9:46 AM
Hi Joey good to see you here! The car runs a Stoptech brake system, however we switched the rear brakes to a Stillen AP kit for drifting because the Stillen kit uses a steel rear drum for the parking brake instead of the alloy Stoptech part. We were worried that the aluminum would not hold up to using the PB as a turning brake.

You said when you are welding the diff you are welding the spider gears to the case? I would honestly recommend removing the roll pin and the spider gears and welding the side gears directly to the case. You'll be able to get a better weld in if you do that as well as if you have a weld failure you'll still have one wheel turning to limp it back in with. I may not be a pro drifter but that's how I weld diffs because I've personally seen the disasters of when a weld on a spider gear fails and it throws the pin out the case or destroys the pinion or ring gear on it's way out.

good read. DAI is the man!

You guys worked your asses off. Dai better rock in Abu Dhabi, but it might be tough for him to battle the sandal drifters in their Camrys. Even though you called me during the build from time to time, I still want to read part 2!

Wow Yas Marina. My dream vacation is a trip there for a V8 Supercar race.

looks excellent, cant wait for part 2!

"This require skill and patience compared to stick welding a regular mild steel muffler shop exhaust. Costa is an awesome fabricator!" Hey, if you can stick-weld mild steel muffler pipe, you've got skillz! :) Looks great. Fab work is top-notch.
