In front wheel drive Chicago local Charles Rhyu put his Top Setup K series swapped CRX on top with a 1:34.506, the fastest FWD time of the weekend! Pro Driver Jason Saini brought out quite a different steed. A caged 2.3 DISI swapped Mazda 5 is NOT something you see everyday. Regardless there it was with Jason behind the wheel who managed a 1:39.333 in the family sled. According to announcer "Nads" tech. required Jason to remove 50 lbs. of groceries before he could race...

All of the go fast bits on this Mazdaspeed 5 are dealer installed options. No warranty is expressed or implied....

Super Modified RWD saw new comer Ben Salasko in his Beast of an S2000 keep it together for a 1:33.757 and the win, not far behind in his very mildly modified turbocharged Miata was Richard Fisher (1:36.034). Rounding out the final podium spot was Jeff Ricca in his 240SX who turned in a 1:36.752 before suffering some sort of failure that sidelined him for the duration of the day.

Apparently rear diffusers work as Ben Salasko laid down a 1:33.757 in his Super Modified stook.

Later in the afternoon the weather had cooperated long enough and decided it was time to let the water loose. It doused the track in a 30 minute shower that left standing water on the front straight. After the rain stopped the Enthusiast class took to the track to provide some entertainment. The OS GIken 350 Z was carrying a nice drift through turns 1 and 2 with the wet conditions and the AWD cars were out showboating with some rally inspired maneuvers.

Charles Rhyu and Tony Wiesenhahn take the grid for the super session.

At the end of the day the super session was called to the grid despite the wet track and all of the days previous events were foreshadowing of things to come. The super session is basically a wheel to wheel race with multiple classes on track competing for position, no time attack stuff, just get it to the front! On the grid for the super session we saw Charles Rhyu in his CRX, Jason Saini in the Mazdaspeed 5, Richard Fischer in his Mazda Miata, and Kris Von Sydow in the VS motorsports Evo for the Super Modified classes. Also lined up were Whit Staples in the Fortune Auto Evo, Brian Lock in the Cobb GTR, Dave Hary in the S Max 240, and Tony Wiesenhahn in his Turn In Concepts WRX rouning out the modfied class representation. The final car on the grid was the Professional Awesome! Evo 7 of Daniel O'Donnell who was a one man show for the street tire class.

We should have known we were in for some carnage when Dave Hary spun his 240SX behind the pace car.... As they came around the starter held the green as long as possible to get everyone nice and close, he waved it last second and everyone struggled for traction. Whit Staples in the Fortune Auto Evo had hung back and got a huge run on the field dive bombing the inside heading in to turn one, the only problem was there wasn't room and he went two off, he eased it back on and couldn't avoid Richard's Miata. The tap resulted in oversteer that turned the Miata around and Staples moved past. On the outside line Jason Saini in the Mazdaspeed 5 was pressuring Charles Rhyu heading in to turn 5, all of this occurring as Kris Von Sydow made a clean getaway in the VS Evo. Staples moved past the two FWD cars to put pressure on Von Sydow and Saini put the Mazdaspeed 5 past Rhyu's CRX. Behind them the field was attempting to stay clean, it appeared that the Cobb GTR struggled for traction on the wet track. As the leaders came around again the Fortune Evo had moved past the VS motorsports Evo for the overall lead. Richard Fischer's Miata entered the main straight and attempted to put the power down and at that time the beginning of the end unfolded. His car oversteered heavily and headed for the inside armco, in a display of heads up driving he got it parallel and took a heavy impact to the passenger side of the car. He slid through the wet grass taking out the Redline timing beacon smashing the rear end and rear window in the process. He didn't miss a beat, righted the cars direction and headed right back out to continue racing.

He either hit is head in the incident or he has serious attachments, either way Richard Fischer pointed the car the right way and continued racing.

The Professional Awesome! Evo managed to avoid the carnage and as the field made it's way around while some brave soul ran on to a hot track to remove timing debris. This time around Jason Saini in the Mazdaspeed 5 went four off and, well, race tires don't exactly make for good traction in the wet grass. Saini put the family wagon into the hay bales and onto the armco, its front wheels dangling in the air... Smoke followed as did the black flag to end the drama filled super session. How you can identify winners in this session is beyond me, however they called it Whit Staples in the Fortune Auto Evo for the overall and modified class win, Kris Von Sydow in the VS evo taking the win in Super Modified, and Dan "no drama" O'Donnell in the Professional Awesome! street tired Evo.

Jason Saini beached the family truckster in the super session....

Quite honestly one does not come to a time attack and expect to see such carnage, needless to say those that attended got more than they bargained for this past weekend. The next stop on the Redline time attack tour is in Rosamond CA at WIllow Springs on July 2-4. If it is anything like round 5 make sure you're there to witness the action.

I feel bad for Mr. Enthused Mustang. Go slash his tires while he's off why don't you.

The Touge Factory's rear diffuser looks sort of like the Sierra Sierra diffuser. Future trend?

The Super Mod S2000's rear diffuser looks like one of those exhaust kitchens. Where you put in the raw food in foil before you leave for the camp grounds and by the time you get there, you have a hot cooked meal ready to serve.

That car sure could use some help in the looks department with its black eye - glare strip - rear kitchen style.

As for the Mazda5. The $995 Autobarn lifetime free car wash sounds good. $64,999 hand written Speed5 Edition and then crashes it. MSRP $18,745, insurance fraud! Woo Hoo! Quad turbo 4 cylinder dual clutch 6? I'm surprised he didn't spend the extra $975 for the Speed5 rear mirror defroster.

Weasel,
This is why we should be weary of dealer demo.'s..... In all seriousness it was a car they built for the one lap of America competition....

Jim,
Ribbing the Mustang is all in good fun... We have ALL been there, maybe not that far off but if we don't have levity what do we have?

The S2K rear diffuser was a home brew special. Not sure about the boy scout meal but I don't remember seeing Ben at the food stand during the lunch break so.... That car reminded me of the Millenium Falcon "she may not look like much but she's got it where it counts"...

I think the cold weather package might have helped but only if it included tire warmers....

Oh and for the record this was my first attendance of a time attack event.... I honestly expected it to be un-eventful and anticipated using creative adjective's to make it sound more fun than it really was. MAN was I WRONG. I had a blast, the day was action packed and I met a TON of cool people. If you haven't been to an event the best part is how open everything is. No roped off area's, take all the pics. you want, talk to the teams and drivers..... If you haven't gone to one you need to go!

Wes Dumalski, Thanks for understanding my bad sense of humor. And you're absolutely right, the S2K does have it where it counts. It came in first in it's class and that's what ultimately counts in time attack. I enjoyed the article and the event seemed action packed. Time attack like any event is more exciting when you have someone you're rooting for.

While the super session is good for spectators it fucking blows for competitors. If you win, you get a pat on the back. Oh wait, even if you win the entire event you only get a pat on the back. It's time attack! Super sessions waste engine life in unlimited (super modified) class cars with limited life spans. Limited unlimited...

Yes, it appears that Sierra Sierra has started a rear diffuser trend haven't they?

Eric,
When I was writing one of my captions I was going to draw a parallel between the Sierra Sierra car and all of the cars now taking rear diffusion seriously. Have you guys competed against the Touge Factory car yet this season?

I have been working towards running TT with NASA in Project 200SX and have come to the realization that it will be nothing more than a hobby that drains money! Seriously is there anyone making money in time attack/TT? I Seriously doubt it..... That said the super session DOES SUCK for the competitor's but it is an optional thing no? I can see from a spectator's point of view the appeal of it, but if I had a car prepped for unlimited or even modified, I would likely not participate.....

Can you imagine the non-safety conscious cyber evo in a super session? If that thing crashed hard the driver would be toast...

Maybe I've misunderstood the rules of RTA, but how did that twin-charged Civic make it into street FWD? I thought you could only have one "major modification" to the motor i.e. an NA build, turbo, OR supercharger. Was it simply classed as a forced induction motor?

Pretty sweet to see some One Lap competitors here. Was the twin-charged Civic okay? Anyone know the extent of the damage?

Also sucks about the Mazda5... is it destined for the crusher? Say it ain't so!

And Charles Rhyu... wasn't that guy on the old BMI/Hot Version American Togue episode (I think Eric Hsu was on that episode too w/a WRX...) where he's a standby car, gets picked cuz another car blew its head gasket, and his k-swapped EG Civic goes in and totally kicks everyone's butt? He's got a sweet looking CRX now, good to know he's still going the light weight, FWD route.

Great write-up Wes! I love the fact that you can walk the pits and get up close to the cars.

As for the rear diffuser, gotta give credit where credit is due, and that's the German DTM series. Check out the diffuser on this Audi: http://www.fourtitude.com/news/uploads/Motorsport_News/new_dtm.jpg

Nick,
Rules permit aftermarket forced induction, I don't see the "one major modification" language.

4-1.5 Aftermarket forced induction is allowed.

I believe this is fair ga
me for more than one form...

Khiem,

One of the guys from the ProfessionalAwesome! evo team interned at honeywell. His name is Alec and said to tell you Co-Op said hello... They did an awesome job with that car. Many of the cars were on suspension setups that I thought were from questionable companies while they were on KW Clubsports....

Speedball,
The evo is a total write off from my point of view. The rear trunk was pushed forward enough to alter the rear door gaps. The main support beam was pushed forward a good4 inches and the fuel filler neck was popped out. The civic fared much better and appeared fixable. Suspension seemed fine but the left rear quarter was smashed in pretty good.

Just for a little clarification, we are not on KW Clubsports, we are actually on KW motorsports 2 Ways. Thanks for the great write up!

Thanks for the clarification and correction. Perhaps I was caught up by the bling that is on our Project S2000. Regardless I was trying to look at many of the cars suspension wise and not too many people were on KW's which is surprising. The higher dollar cars were on JRZ's or Moton's, but I really thought I would see more cars on KW....

Wes, Sierra has not run against the Touge Factory car this year. In fact Sierra has only competed (and won) one time attack this year at Buttonwillow. After that the car had to leave to Australia and is still on the boat on the way back.

I await it's return... Once the car is back do they run all the time attack events (east coast)?

Are you familiar with the TF car? I was checking it out at the event and it appeared to be on Stance Coilover's. I guess I had always tossed them in with the likes of Tein, JIC, etc..... Are their higher end damper's on par with the big boy stuff... anybody know?

Eric/Wes, outside of contingencies which RTA does have, what form of amateur motorsport at all do you get anything more than a trophy for? It's not just time attack...goes back to the whole making 1 million dollars in racing costs 2 million dollars deal.
