Video by Meguiar's: Restore Your Fogged Up Headlights

MotoIQ Staff Report

If you don't know who Meguiar's is then you have probably been hiding under a rock for some time.  Meguiar's is the #1 producer of high quality car care products.  We got to meet the good folks at Meguiars at a SEMA event a few months ago and they impressed us with their knowledge and passion for what they do.  In fact Meguiar's invited the MotoIQ crew to their headquarters to teach them some of the secrets of car detailing which you will see in a future article soon.

Meguiar's is going to be releasing a series of how to videos over the next few months and we are going to be airing them here on MotoIQ so you can learn some of the stuff we learned.  As long as your car still has paint, you can work miracles with their stuff and proper technique.  We learned it first hand ourselves!  Now with this video, you can learn stuff too.  Enjoy.

I used some old 3M cut compound, and a buffer to bring my talon's headlights back to life, this technique worked for me!

I've always wondered what a good product or method would be for this. I just never got around to researching it.

I'm sold.

I just polished the headlights on my Q45 yesterday using the Meguairs kit. It really helps to bring them back to life.

Great info, I stumbled onto this concept about 1995 and it's made a big difference over time. I also find most people I talk to have no clue you can do this sort of restoration to plastics. I guess not too many people subscribe to things like Hemmings Sports and Exotic Cars, aka Old Coot Restoration Magazine ;)

I've used PlastX for easily about 10 years, maybe more. Meguiar's G12310 PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner and Polish is the stuff I use for finishing the lights or when the lights are not badly oxidized. originally marketed more for marine plastics like snap-in plastic windows. Once you get ahead of the problem it's a lot easier to keep them looking good. PlastX seems to really get into the layers under the surface somehow and actually improves clarity beyond the top. I just touch up the lenses with a microfiber when I am done cleaning the car, takes little time and keeps them nice and clear.

And it now has a G35 Coupe on the bottle instead of a Boat, so it must be good ;)

Steve, what about those of us with 16 years of yellow, pitted patina on our plastic headlights? Would you recommend some sanding (600 grit -> 800 grit -> 1,000 grit?) before doing the polish?
