Wrench Tips - Tip #12: Spark Plug Hose

I'm sure this has happened to all of you. You know when you dig a classic Miata show car out of the basement and it won't start because the gas in it is 10 years old?

So of course you go to pull the spark plugs out and smell how fouled with with skunky old turpentine they are and, what's this? You can't find a spark plug socket?

Ok, so a regular deep-well socket will do for loosening the plugs, but how do you get the plugs out of those pesky wells when you can't find any tools?

You could just use a plug wire to take it out.

The hose works much better, I have a couple in my tool box just for this exact thing.

My spark plug sockets have the rubber inserts. The plugs come out when I finish unscrewing them.

Fantastic idea. The rubber o-rings in my plug sockets never do a great job of holding onto the plug afterwards. This will save a lot of time and frustration.

That is also a really good way to make sure you don't cross thread the spark plug in an aluminum head when you are installing them. I've been using this method for years after a friend showed me, it works great.

The plug wire is a pretty good idea, but it doesn't work on #3 because of the strut bar. You can barely get that wire out without the plug on the end. Both ideas are good to have in your back pocket when you get stuck without a spark plug socket.

An old piece of yellow breather hose from an RS Akimoto intake (old skool!) worked great during my racing days.
