What are some suggestions for cameras to mount inside and outside of the car?  Are most people using their home video cameras?  Or has anybody purchased the newer smaller stick-anywhere cameras?  I'm in the market to buy something and looking for input. A friend mentioned GoPro.  What else is available?  Who has first-hand experience?

I have seen a really cool system for track cameras. It uses a laptop with some recording software, a gps to track speed, position, lap time, etc, and up to 3 cameras. It is relatively inexpensive and seems to work great. The only complaint I have seen is that the audio isn't too great. I will try to find what I am thinking of.

Found what I was talking about...took me a while though.

It looks really neat, but is a bit pricy if all you want is a simple camera (For some reason I thought it was cheaper than that). From what I gather though, you can buy the system and supply your own cameras and laptop for $550. Not too shabby if you ask me.

go pro wide angle is amazing. Even on the low sound setting it'll cut out because of mic sensitivity. A little tape over the mic fixes that. Most cameras I've seen need a little tape over the mic to keep the sound from cutting in and out. The chase camera vids aren't as good, sound cut out, and distortion from vibrations. Chase cam used to be on the car. One issue with the gopro is that if you mount the camera in the car it will adjust to the inside light levels and wash out the outside if it's mounted in a low light part of the interior. It's vastly improved over the old version, which was a pain to use, the new one is great.

This was shot with the camera mounted to the bumper about grill level. The camera comes with a suction base, and multiple stick on bases (3m adhesive) and a really good selection of arms and fixtures. you can run a 2gig SD card and it's good for 30+ min of video. The case is impact resistant, took some real good licks from kicked up rocks from a car ahead taking an alternate line in the dirt. We got some great video with the camera stuck to the helmet, but it's still on the laptop, and some good shots across the hood. Good for review and tweaking brake points, turn in , and lines.

There was a camera I saw in grassroots mag that uses the ODB port to display RPM and speed maybe more. Don't know the name but it'd be great for review of entry speed and RPM at corners.

I've used a small CCTV camera connected to an electronic recording unit but it was too much stuff and a hassle to start/stop, etc. I just picked up the brand new Ultra HD Flip and I plan to see how that goes.

I just use my digital camera mounted to a suction mount. Nothing fancy, but it does the job.

I went ahead and ordered a GoPro Wide non-HD motorsports kit for $137. Ideally I'd like two cameras, one for in the cockpit pointed at the pedals and shifter, and another pointed out the front to try to do some split screen video. First use will probably be on my buddies Camaro out in Fontana at a PSCA event in November.

Cameras pointed at the dash are also a real good poor mans data logger!

Figured I'd throw up my first vid with the new camera. I think something happened with the resolution when uploading to u-tube. I'll have to play with that. I'm a vid n00b. I cut the length down from 9 minutes, it was getting boring.

Looks like it works pretty damn well as a helmet cam!

I think youtube might auto-compress uploads.  I might be wrong though.
