I have owned my 92 NX1600 since December 1992. Since 2001 or 2 I've been thinking about a GTi-R swap. I've actually purchased two NX2000s and a 200sx SE-R with the thought of a swap but never followed through on it. A year ago I found out about a GTi-R clip that had been purchased a decade ago for a project that never occurred. It has been stored less than ten minutes drive from my house that entire time. Last fall I bought it. This engine looked pristine - each of the heat shield bolts came out perfectly (just an example of the great shape of this engine). Compression is 150, 150, 150 and 145. The engine and ECU are stock GTi-R and that's radical enough for the next year or two. Yesterday virtually everything was completed and now it is time to break the engine in. The SR and GTi-R community stepped up to ensure that I was able to complete this. Specifically nxpartsource, lynx, fastnx, and jkho. Greg at G Spec stepped up and helped me out by slashing what could have been a month long project delay to a few hours. Major props. Thanks to Mike, Jeff and Wes for their inspiration and positive support.
Thanks to Scott at Can-Alignment http://www.canalignment.com He's racecartech on the SR forum! I cannot say enough about his creativity, professionalism and ability to take a challenging project from start to finish. Scott has done my alignments for a few years now - this was obviously a much larger project. March 9 to 16 was 12 to 16 hour days - and a number of evenings and full weekends since then. What a great shop!

Good luck to your trans and your next track day should be very interesting to see with the new found power.

The transmission is a 5 speed LSD from an Infiniti G20 P10 -- update, I got the receipts for the tranny and it's a 99 P11 -- with the case strengthened. I've been looking for a P11/B15 since I started purchasing parts for the build. With the mechanics of the build almost complete I located a P11 transmission as a spare and it will be ready when I need it. A lightweight flywheel and a Bully Stage Four clutch finish off the drivetrain.

I am anticipating losing a few seconds at each of my favourite road courses!

You'll notice a fair amount of room around the GA16 engine. I will tell you this is a bittersweet moment. This engine has been amazing. If you're interested in buying one of the most modified GA16 engines in Ontario, send me a PM.

That being said, I don't look too sad!

Scott was a great support through this project.

Getting the GTi-R SR20DET ready to go in.

It's got a T 28 turbo. I'm using the stock downpipe that's been re-welded to fit a FWD setup and the stock uppipe has simply been turned to fit a FMIC.

Scott will not appreciate me gushing about this, but if you thought watching him align a car was a work of art you should see him with a wiring harness.

My role in the wiring department was clean up. The GTi-R harness had been damaged by rats when shipped from Japan ten years ago - that's right, ten years this engine has been sitting ten minutes away at Will's house - so we used parts from the GA harness and parts from an SR harness. So there was lots to clean up.

Nothing more needs to be said here.

Lot's of room now.

You just cannot quite see the ITBs from this shot - but believe me, they're there!

The GA16's transmission shed a few teeth last season and that was the prompt to start the swap. We also found that the throw out bearing was toast. An Infiniti G20 (P11) has been mated to the SR, with the transmission housing strengthened for the extra HP.

Finding a P11 or B15 transmission was a challenge. So when a second P11 came available (less than two hours away) I bought it as my safety! The nice thing about the Infiniti transmissions, they easily wire to the NX1600s digital dash. Right now the speedo gearing is off - showing 55 kph it's actually doing about 110 kph. So it's almost like it's reading in mph! In fact, when I switch the digital dash to MPH and multiple the shown speed by three, it's almost perfect with KPH. Example, when it shows 40 mph I'm actually doing 120 KPH or about 75 MPH.

Water temp, Oil Temp and Oil pressure gauges have been added.

Scott discovered my secret tricks to keep the car's weight up high so that I was still able to stay in Touring 3! LOL!!!

Placing the FMIC up front to consider placement.

I like this!

We had to cut out a minimal amount of material to fit the intercooler piping in place.

Checking out the fitment

While there was lots of room with the GA, the SR certainly required a bit of finesse to get in place.

Bully was my clutch choice. They are a Canadian Clutch manufacturer and an avid supporter of local motorsports. I had a Stage 3, 3 puck in the previous set up and was very happy so no question about this project. A Stage Four clutch with an Aasco Motorsports flywheel.

We had to grind a bit from the transmission to allow fitment of the crossmember.

JB Weld is being used to reinforce the tranmission - the holes used by the factory for weight savings are a weak point when mated to an engine with 100 more HP than the Infiniti had.

Cold Air Intake !

Factory downpipe - it was cut at the flex pipe when the front clip was brought over. That's okay as it didn't fit my set up anyhow. Straightened it up and sticking with my 2" exhaust that I used with my GA. Restrictive but still better flow than the GTi-R's 2 " exhaust.

Which one will I bring to

Ontario Time Attack

? In the fall I picked up a 92 NX2000 that I'm using as my winter car.

Couldn't leave Can-Alignment without a corner balance and alignment!

Ford, a regular CASC-OR Time Attack competitor, was in on a regular basis to help out. We were also regularly checking out Scott's new widebody 240SX. My car is done and Scott can move on to other projects.

I think I would upgrade that little exhaust the first chance you get. I would think it will make for some really high EGTs, restricting boost and I don't know what else.

Nice placement of the FMIC and the air filter though right where I have mine too! I really like where this car is going!

Jere, Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I appreciate it and absolutely hear you. If I change the up and/or down pipe it will cause me to be bumped up another class, because I'm already very close to the limit for what I'm hoping my new class is going to be in our Time Attack series. I'm also out of $$$.

But in one or two years ... hard to say. I've already got a lead on some cams!

Had the car out and was seeing how it drove, felt etc.
Allow me to say I'm smiling. My fan is not activating so I've obviously got an issue with wiring to track down, but otherwise it's very sweet.

2000 kilometres on the car since the swap. Pulled the GTi-R steering wheel off of another NX that I own and installed it in this car. It's bling that fits!
Was at Mosport instructing on the small track this past weekend and took the car out for a few laps. I didn't have my vented hood on and, even though it was cool and rainy, it would overheat unless the heat was turned on. Even so, the car was a lot of fun. Back to Mosport GP in a couple of weeks to see how it really performs with the vented hood in place.

I confirmed that the transmission installed is from a 99 Infiniti G20. I wasn't initially sure of the year of the transmission. I also have picked up two more 99 G20 transmissions so I have a back up plan ready to go.

I was at Mosport on the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the trip from 5 to 8 - and everywhere else also - but 5 to 8 has always been a challenge with the 1.6 litre engine. The GTi-R engine just pulls all the way through. This was a test weekend and it revealed a few flaws. It was still sweater/spring coat weather even at the warmest part of the day yet after being out for ten to fifteen minutes the car needed the heat on full and cool down laps to start as it was getting really hot. I've also got a bad axle, therefore I couldn't really push through any of the right hand corners. It was not too bad though, as one of the Porsche GT3 drivers that I've shared the track with before commented how, as I hung with him for a while, that my car was much faster than last year. So here's my solution to the overheating. The first pic is with my vented track hood, the second with my street hood.

And here are a few inside pics:

Hi Jere, I'll get some pics posted to give you a better view. It's a functional but ugly approach - I sketched it out and then had some high school kids work on an old hood (I have three) in their shop class to see if it would work. It does. First opening is just behind the rad and the next is just behind that/in front of the valve cover. They welded in some louvers under the hood.

Gabby, I've got a Bully Stage 4 clutch with an Aasco lightweight flywheel bolted to a 99 Infiniti G20 LSD transmission.
I haven't been online much do to way too much to do at work and then a large time commitment as my oldest daughter got married. Plus, after an outing at Shannonville Motorsports Park where we were putting down some decent times and staying pace with Corvettes on the quarter mile straight (the dragstrip is built into the road course) and in which my youngest daughter, Katie, beat my best time. I'm proud of her but it was father's day so she did her best to show what a good dad I am!
However, we broke the passenger side axle mount. I'm now trying to source a GTI-R transfer case mount that we can fabricate to hold the SR20 axle mount. Seems like I need that kind of strength. So when that and some boost leak issues get sorted out, the project will be back on track again!

Couple of comments: (constructive of course )

1. We've run the GTiR in our race car for 7 years now and have never broken the pass side axle mount. Even with the two out of three bolts holding it (300 hp/290 ft/lbs). Possible existing stress crack in yours or some type of driveshaft alignment issue?

2. An external oil cooler is almost an absolute must for this engine in the NX. Will go a long way to reducing temps and add to bearing life. A KOYO will also help!

3. I meant to get in contact earlier with you, but time got away from me..... sorry..... If you have any questions at all, feel free to PM.

Dave,
Good to hear from you and I'm always open for comments!
I've wondered whether or not you had any issues. Does seem to be some driveshaft alignment issue. To compensate we've added a 3/16" plate that's 5" by 10" and it catches all five bolt holes on the block. The SR mount is bolted to this, all three bolts. Why the alignment issue is the long term question to sort out.

I'll work on the external oil cooler. I do have an aluminum rad - just not a Koyo.

PM sent - and maybe we'll cross paths at Mosport or Shannonville sometime. We'll be there for the Canadian National Time Attack Championships August 26, 27 and 28.
