I'm trying to stiffen my S13 up a bit.  It currently has KYB struts with RS*R springs.  Assuming they're "Down Springs" the rates are 212/168 lbs/in front/rear (3.8/3.0 kg).  I'm looking at a set of TEIN S-tech springs for $40 on ebay, and their rates are 207/179 lbs (3.7/3.2 kg).  And on Craigslist, I'm looking at a set of KYBs with Tein camber plates and Tanabe GF210 springs, with rates of 2.9/2.7 kg (they don't list lbs).

I can't honestly believe the RS*Rs are anywhere near that, I can compress them with my fingers.  The car sits nearly bottomed out and I'm sick of it.  The car understeers, bottoms out, and just plain sucks.  I don't have the money for coilovers, so I have to make due with springs for now.  Which should I go with?  My 4th option would be to scrounge or splurge on Ground Control coilovers, but I can't seem to find them used (which means Id have to save for a while).  I'd prefer the TEINs simply because of the price.  I may also do the Frankenmiata trick of adding super long and squishy bumpstops for extra spring rate.  I'm thinking maybe mix the RS*R fronts with the TEIN rears to get the rear end to be more lively.  Thoughts?

Oh and finally, what's your guys opinion of Godspeed?  Are they good parts?  Looking at their sway bar/ control arm kit as an option for suspension bits while on a college/minimum wage budget.  As always, a big thanks in advance for the help.

If the Teins really are firmer then I would say that yes they'd be a good choice, based on the specs you've listed though they sound like they could be equally soft. As far as Godspeed is concerned they are cheap Chinese parts. Some guys in the 300ZX community are using their stuff and at least a quick search on twinturbo.net didn't reveal any horror stories to date.

I think you should save your money a set of coil overs with threaded collars and a standard sized 2" or 2.5" spring. Then if they don't come with the rates you want the springs can be had inexpensively and in many different lengths and rates. It's really the best way.

The lowering springs your looking at don't appear to have enough difference spring rate wise to make much difference among them. I don't know what the stock spring rate is on an s13, but I bet those springs are hardly stiffer than stock. And you didn't list the length of the springs. They all probly lower the car some, but for performance on low rates like those you'd probly want the tallest ones so you don't bottom out when loaded up going around corners.

Looking at all my options, I think I will save up over the winter/summer and get Ground Control sleeves. Then I can save some more and get Koni struts to go with them, and camber plates later on. And then one day when I'm making real money, KW V3s will replace all that crap.

I know this is old, but I think I figured out what the problem with my RS*Rs is: they're fake. I bought my car used and I think the last owner bought knockoff springs. They say RS*R on them, but they are far softer than 212 pounds. I want to take them to a spring tester and see how strong they really are.

The Teins were used that's why they were so cheap.  Either my springs are fake or they're damaged because the car sits almost on the bumpstops, and the only weight I added was a rollbar where the backseat use to be (and those pretty much cancel each other out).  I've got my money on fake.

Probably some springs some guy in China bent by hand and painted green.
