I'm building an 11-speed gearbox for my Mustang. I figure I can take a 5-speed from an '09 and the 6-speed in my '11. I'd also have two reverse gears!
That would be crazy. Put them in series and that would be WAAAAY more speeds than just 11. You'd have 11 reverse "gears" technically, and if my sleep deprived brain and lazy "do it in my head" math serve correctly you'd have 31 forward gears. Though I would imagine that the number of useful gears would be around 10 if even that. You'd have a 9.90:1ish 1+1 gear to start with and a ~0.40:1ish 6+5 gear for highway cruising.
Back on topic though, I hate automatic transmissions and their valve bodies and electronics! Wouldn't it be easier (and more fuel efficient) for manufacturers to just make a mechanically self shifted (though computer controlled) sequential manual gearbox for people too lazy to shift? Maybe even ditch the synchros and possibly the clutch in favor of computer controlled rev matching.
