Why didn't he just buy a school bus? Devalue that instead of an equally long dodge of the same color.

Living in Montana I've seen this sort of thing become really common in the last couple years. All the cool diesel truck guys are doing it. Stupid waste of bed space if you ask me. I'd also think the exhaust would rust out pretty fast with all the rain that would get in there when it's not running, but maybe they have that issue sorted.

SMH. MBRP makes a really good exhaust for these year-model Rams that look like the stock exhaust just with a larger piping.

Saw one on my way to work. Single stack probably around 10-12 Inches in diameter.

The stack was mounted right next to cab at the split in the window. It was cut right at the roof line for aero i am sure. =) the truck was sooty all around it. It was a newer Ram as well.

Go to the local drags and you see many 13 sec 1/4 mile diesels with foot diameter stacks spewing the nastiest black smoke everywhere.

I hate trucks quite a bit here in indiana, because they are literally rednecks. It is ALWAYS truck drivers that try to run cyclists off the road or spew black smoke intentionally.
Darwinism isn't good enough.

Can someone with experience in diesel tuning tell me if that black soot is really necessary for power production? It is just from running super rich right? So am I missing something that is unique to diesels that makes this beneficial?

Well, I am going to throw out what a very layman observer would see.

I attend my local Indy Raceway Park drags and see a pickup truck do a 12 second 1/4 mile and literally spew more smoke than you see from a flappers era locomotive running coal. - Observation made

Then I go and attend 12 hours of Sebring. Interesting, the Audi and Peugeot are flying past at 160mph with no smoke. To top it off, the Audi could be considered silent with a mild prius like roar out of the Peugeot.

So to me, I say, No, you do not need to shoot those hydrocarbons into the sky just because you loaded the Big Dog Banks Super Duty Cummins Rather be Strokin If You Can't Dodge it, Ram It Rom Tuner into your OBD2.

That is just me though!

Too much smoke means not enough air which means they aren't making the power they should be.

No, black soot is a sign that it isn't tuned as well as it could be. This is Banks' world record holding diesel drag truck, no smoke and it's in the 7s.

EVEN BETTER...at least in my opinion. Went down to a small farming community on Friday and what do i see, two young farmer looking gents pulling out of a parking lot in their older diesel truck. Real farm truck.

In the bed right behind the cab is a stack...but not like the big stacks i see on brand new trucks with d-bag drivers. I see a 4-5 " vertical green painted (must be a deere lover) with a hinged stack cap.

So, these gents were probably trying to actually replicate their tractor.
