I will be taking a possition in Camarillo, but I live in Corona, giving me a possible 100 mile commute. I can't take the Evo for this drive. I know this. But I have been spoiled with the fun of a 4g63 motor since '96 and dreading stepping down to anything else. But I know I have to.
What is fun to drive, but get 30+mpg?
My wife says get a Prius, but that thought of that makes me wanna put a gun to my head.
How about a 97-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T; turbo that doesn't spool till 4K, lean down low, efficient breathing motor, and lightened? Think I could I eek out 29-30mpg? |

A Honda Ruckus? A DSM isnt going to get anywhere near 30 mpg. I would get a Honda Civic with a B series swap. |

If I lived in So-Cal I'd be riding a bike year-round. As it is I ride my bike until the road freezes here.
I HATE driving my Pathfinder and putting $45 worth of fuel in it every 2-3 days. On my bike that's 9-10 days worth of riding! |

Civic Si might not be a bad choice then. If you're taking passengers on occasion the the four door model would probably be a good bet. They're fun to drive and they get good mileage. I do wish however that they had a little bit better power to weight ratio.
A Volkswagen GTI might be another good bet, it's rated at 31MPG on the highway or if the MPG part of the equation is more of importance you could get the TDI golf and go for 42MPG on the highway. |

A Civic SI 4-door would do well. I have to say though, my buddy has a coupe and I'm not a big fan of it with respect to a 'performance' vehicle. The engine and tranny are amazing, but the suspension just feels 'soft' to me. An aftermarket suspension would probably fix that. And you'll have to get use to not having torque. See if you can stuff adults in the back of the Mini |

Forget what wife says and do what you want as long as its reasonable. Then get another if she gets mad. |

I'd shoot myself before I get a minivan. ... and I came to find out Saturn parts are too hard to come by. If I forget what my wife says she'll shoot me! |

Does the criteria of still needing to be able to carpool every once in a while still hold? If so a 4 door would still be a must. I have to agree with spdracerut... a 4 door Civic or Sentra should do the job nicely. |

1992 EG civic with a B16 built for 10k rpm, but with a GSR transmission so you get some kind of overdrive for the mpg. Anything that revs to 10k would be fun to drive. |

I got 36.1MPG out of my 1991 GST on a trip to Edmonton. I usually got around 30MPG without using any hypermilling techniques, mid 20's around town.
Car was stock minus K&N filter and moded MAS. I was also running higher tire pressures too. I'd think a turbo fwd 2g would fit the bill but there are other cars that would work as well.
Just remember EGR is good! |

You know what? I knew I got pretty good gas mialge from my old GS-T (2g). I remember getting 28mpg on a regular basis, but not 30. I wasn't sure if it could be done. 4g63's are what I know best so maybe I need to give them more thought. A lightened 1g FWD, stock injectors, good tune, stock air box, and a 7 cm2 turbine housing... hmmmm. |

You will never be home if you drive from Corona to Camarillo and back everyday. |

True but I imagine in CA jobs are real slim pickins. If it was me I'd buy the newest, most reliable car I could for this. 100 mile commutes aren't something you need an old ready to bust car for, nor something modded you have to fix/tinker with all the time (cause you won't have the time) |

If you start thinking of saturn again, check out sixthsphere.com. A twin cam with i/h/e, street cams and a piggyback tune will be quick, and get good gas mileage. you can even swap in the taller 5th gear of a single cam car without removing the tranny from the car. |
