More accurately, what do you wrench on? Post up pics of your ride for other Subie-nuts to geek out on. I'll start things off: I'm particular to the 2nd generation EA series cars. I have two of them, a wagon and a coupe. Both are turbocharged. Besides those I also own a lifted (yes, lifted) EA81 hatchback that lacks the turbo engine, but increases the reliability infinitely. It has a few key modifications in an effort to keep it livable on a day to day basis and maintain the all-weather functionality and overall awesomeness that the car has the potential to be. It has exhaust and intake work, new struts and lowered suspension with several awesome wheel and tire combos, mostly involving vintage Enkei 13"x5.5"s. Other major mods include a swap from a 3 speed 4WD auto to a 5 speed dual range part-time 4WD manual that has recently been converted to rear wheel drive (yes, rear wheel drive) with a pair of LSDs in the back with different ratios. I have a bunch of brake parts ready to go on including parts from Hawk and Brembo and a bunch of all wheel drive transmissions with locking center diffs, one of which might receive an EJ viscous center diff with custom ratio gears. The few power adders I've collected for the ce, besides the header, DP and cat-less exhaust I've held off on installing until I have all the bugs and quirks worked out of the car. http://www.motoiq.com/MyGarage/tabid/96/showtab/photos/Default.aspx#showtab=photos|asview=asimages|params=34 Check out the pics and let me know what you think or ask any questions, if you have any. |

I've got a 07 WRX. The only wrenching that has been done on it has been basic maintenance, fluids and brakes, etc. I thought about a few suspension mods this spring but I've got other priorities to care for right now. However no one has laid a hand on it since I bought it new, not even warranty work since it hasn't failed yet (knock on wood). It's got Enkei RPF1's, Hawk pads, that's about it. I also had a 03 WRX which is the same story. As far as what else I wrench on, I installed all new motor mounts in my wife's Mazda6 last night. I'll do some work next week to my brother's car (used to be mine), a mk3 Jetta VR6, and I've been helping a friend put together a 1981 mk1 Jetta coupe, 16V engine/trans swap with dual Webers, H&R coils, mk2 dash swap, all kinds of component rebuilding, etc. There's pics of the 07 in my garage, I can post some other pics later on. The wagon looks pretty bitchin'! Do you autox or rallyx it, or anything? |

Lan-EVO, eh? Those are cool....I guess... Just kidding! Have any pics of the EVO? Nice pig-nose WRX, vanilla-yo! I'm kinda jealous you haven't needed any work on yours. We've owned an '02 bug-eye since new, autoxing it pretty heavily in SCCA D-stock. Just had the rod bearings let go on the engine though. As for the wagon, yes I've run it around the cones once, but just once. I need to drop a new clutch in it (RWD is too much fun!) before I compete in it again. |

Well I do drive it pretty mildly, I've done just two light track days and one autox since I bought it new in Feb '07. Otherwise I've sorta just been commuting the last few years But at any rate they are, barring any driver-induced pain, extremely reliable. Lost your bottom end eh? If you're in D-stock I must assume it's stock. How many miles? What kind of oil do you run in it? |

Yeah, bone stock except for the tires and Stoptech stage 2 brake kit. Dual drivers at each event every event since 2002, minus the last two. (Now we race a stock STI) The WRX has under 90k on it with Mobil 1 since new with OEM filters, which makes this whole engine failure wierd. On the other hand, we are on our second clutch and the original tranny with no foreseeable problems (knock on wood). |

Well that's too bad. I'm not sure if these engines suffer from oil starvation issues while cornering (never heard of it anyhow). There is the hearsay that problems arise around the #4 cylinder since it's nearest to the turbo. Have you torn it down to see which bearings failed? There's a local WRX guy who just fried his bearings too. I didn't follow his story, all I know is that he got a "tune" one day, didn't behave himself the very next day on the highway, so I'm sure his case is different than yours. But at any rate, quick math says you probably got a good 700 laps out of 'er! |

I haven't had the time/money/space to tear it down yet. Right now the WRX is keeping my BRAT and two turbo wagons company in my driveway. I'm one class short of graduating and should have pleanty of time to work after that. I wouldn't be surprised though if it was the #4 cylinder, those have been going bad on the boosted subies since 1983.
Sure did get our money's worth out of that engine though. I learned to drive stick on it as did my younger brother. It has driven all over the west coast and been used as a foul weather ski vehicle for the better part of a decade now. When it does get rebuilt, you can bet that I'll be looking for what went wrong and I'll do my best to ensure it never happens again.
Got pics of your 'ru uploaded yet? |

Gotta love those bugeyes. Best looking one of the three in my opinion but then, like you, we have both a bugeye and a pig nose in our family stable. Subarus just rock! |

Corn fuel huh? How much power has that added to your ride vs. the trade off in MPGs? Thats a nice looking bug-eye, BTW. |

yep, corn fuel
the difference is crazy, but I get 30% less mpg compared to 91, but right now Im at around 300 whp, 330wtq, at 19 psi.
compared to 91 Im seeing spool 300-400 rpm earlier, it spools faster, and holds a bit better up top.
and it feels just aggressive as hell.
right now, wot, peak torque im seeing 42* of timing haha, at one point I was at almost 50 and still not knokcing.
its pretty impressive what e85 can do on turbo 4 bangers.

'99 Subaru Impreza RS here. Basically stock drivetrain with some nice suspension goodies. Details here: http://buildafastercar.com/blog/KevinM/99-Subaru-Impreza-RS-autocross-contender-20091031 Eventually it's going to evolve into a pretty dedicated track/autocross car with a serious NA engine build, but that's at least a year away. |

The whole goal of the car is OEM + whenever possible and that makes it cheap to do and it actually works! |

I took my wife out of her Highlander a couple years back and put her in the B9 Tribeca 5 Passenger Limited...My first Suby, definitely not my last...Had three passengers (including driver), where I drove through a Tropical Storm with close to at least 2 inches of water on the highway for a 70mile stretch... Symetrical AWD drove through the water like butter holding 50-60mph avg speed...very enjoyable with the shiftronic...very impressive all around handling...
I have to admit my love for Subaru grew beyond the obvious performance specifications when the car basically saved my wife from major injuries...a Ford Econoline commercial van basically made a V line for my wife who was in the right lane after both were stopped at a traffic light...After hitting approx 20mph, the driver of the van pushed my wife off the road onto the sidewalk, where she was able to control the car after the impact and stop before hitting a telephone pole...Driver attempted to leave the scene, but was unable to due to a blown tire cause from the impact of the accident...He was found at the scene to be intoxicated and apparently fell asleep at the wheel as they both pulled away from the interesection where the traffic light was located...
Its strange how things happen...I remember sitting at the Suby dealership explaining to them how I was a fan of the Boxer engine, and the performance you get right from the manufacture including the AWD system, ect...the woman sales associate then began explaining in detail how high Subaru's safety ratings were and how safe my wife would be knowing she was driving a Subaru...thinking this was another way of selling me the car I asked how so...She described almost word for word, how Subaru builds each of its vehicles with these oval ring-shaped reinforcements in their frame. This frame is designed and fortified to withstand tremendous force in order to maintain structural integrity during a collision and help shield occupants from the worst of the impact. What's more, its unique design diverts that dangerous impact energy away from occupants to further protect them in a collision. http://www.subaru.com/engineering/s...ction.html
I spoke with the guy at the body shop, who ended up repairing around $10,000 in damage including the bent axle, suspension driver side front wheel area and driver side door...stating how well he felt the car took the hit from a very heavy HVAC van with no frame damge anywhere...I explained to him and to my wife (as the sales woman told me) how these ovals structures are built into the frame basically spreading the impact rather than letting it easily penetrate the frame...though the frame was ultimately strong enough to withstand the impact, I cannot tell you enough how lucky I feel that my wife was driving a Subaru that day... |
