We are going to run Moton 3 way motorsport dampers. For the ECU in the bolt on stage we are going to use ECU flash. Once we get into the engine internaly and go bigger turbo we will do some sort of stand alone and go speed density. We are leaning toward motec since its plug and play.

What sort of ECU did you have in mind?

The stock ECU is as good as any stand alone. The stock ECU has protection parameters in it that the motec does not have. Mellon tuning has now put more than 700 hp using the stock ECU. You can use the stock MAF system up to 500 hp. There are speed density patches from JCSbanks on Evom, as was mentioned. You can store up to two maps in one ECU and switch between them. I have tuned meth/water and E85 on one map and 91 octane on another map. They work as advertised. There is absolutely no reason to go the stand alone route when the stock ECU can get the job done as effeciently and with more protection to the engine.

This would definitely be an opinion. I usually find that people think the stock ECU is adequate when they haven't experienced anything better.  And yes, I know that most of the aftermarket ECUs in the tuner market are not necessarily better than stock.

For a street car owner with more time than money, yes a stock ECU can get you 80% of the way there. You'll need instrumentation, high speed data logging, and an OEM calibration engineer to get you the other 20% for perfection.  The OEM platform is designed for OEM calibration engineers to develop very detailed calibrations for 300hp engines to last for their warranty period, return good fuel mileage, drive perfectly smooth under any condition, and burn ultra clean. On top of that, these OEM calibration engineers use 200+ channel ultra high speed dataloggers (100,000Hz plus) to achieve this. They are not meant for high performance engines where a hot rod tuner requires instantaneous changes and high speed datalogging.

For a proper race car (the operative word here is PROPER), a stock ECU isn't even remotely capable. It simply doesn't have enough inputs and outputs to drive features required in a proper race car and log parameters at high speed.  And no, 5 samples per second from an open source logging software for a limited amount of channels isn't remotely fast or thorough enough either.

There's nothing wrong with taking on the challenge to make something (stock ECU) do what it isn't supposed to do (proper engine control under any and all conditions), but I don't think it's fair to be declaring that a stock ECU is the end all be all.

Evo X here with a mild bit of tuning through ECUFlash, evoscan and the whole "the-evom-try-gunzo/gst/nj/etc-rom-then-datalog-edit-learn-rinse-repeat". Also have some east coast track time with Trackdaze (summit point) and hoping to start hpde in the spring (novice)...

I've really enjoyed reading the posts in/around MotoIQ.  It's really nice to hear from people (engineers/drivers/mechanics/tuners) with solid experience to back up their claims...

Also, grew up in the South, went to school with spdracerUT (Univ of FL), and definitely still don't understand the redneck lingo...

I love me some stock ECU, but when I go to the track I have 3 different systems logging stuff and it is a hassle. Getting engine data with Evoscan or Logworks, thermocouple data from a stand alone TC logger, Traqmate for GPS track data as well as chassis sensors. It's a pain. That's where one cross functional system that can do ECU, Track, and Chassis logging is a nice streamlined way to do it.

I've heard of these EVO's, there's always one sitting in my garage wanting me to work on it.

Are you looking for an answer or just making a statement about your current set-up?

I'm saying I'd love to have a Motec, Pi, or Pectal system on my car to run the engine, and datalog everything in a single user interface instead of the three I use now.

Tuning on the stock ECU is pretty powerful now, but it ends at tuning, and as others have said for a motorsports car there is more need than just tuning.

okay.

If you have the money, go Cosworth Electronics (Pi/Pectel) all the way. I believe Mark said they have a CAN interface to log from the stock ecu, you can try to figure-out the wiring to make an EVO X EC PRO work in an older car, or you can rewire everything ( Sierra Sierra style ) and run a stand alone racing ecu.

If you don't have big money, figure-out what data you REALLY want to log, whether-or-not it is sent to the ecu in a 0-5V range, and how you might tap into the harness to get that signal to the Traqmate Expansion Module 2.

Have fun and let us know how it goes.

Hi all, I'm definitely interested in the project but don't own an Evo. I do however own two Talon TSi AWD's and a Galant VR-4. The platforms are antiquated for sure but there are still quite a few similarities with their newer 4G63 powered bretheren As far as the stock ECU goes, I've had old romtuned DSM's, recently picked up an Evo VIII ecu for the Galant, and have an Autronic SM2 for one of the Talons. Unless you're building an absolute, all out time attack monster the stock ECU is more than capable. That being said sure I'd take an M800 with every sensor / gauge cluster in the book over the stock ECU anyday

Add one more evo guy to the list;
Me.
04 Evo VIII RS daily driver with bolt on goodies and my flashed ecu. It works for me, but I'm too poor to go to the track or have a real race car.
