I did a lot of research before I bought my NSX 4 months ago. I was looking for a 91-94 with less than 100k miles to drive every day. I wanted something rare and fun, but still reliable. The primary thing I was looking out for was making sure the timing belt had been replaced recently and that the car was not in what NSX owners call "snap ring range." This is a range of transmission serial numbers that have a countershaft snap ring groove with too loose of tolerances that can cause the snap ring to undergo excess stress and break. More info can be found here: Snap Ring Failure

I finally found a car (that just happened to be around the corner from where I lived) that was a '92 with just 64k miles and the timing belt had been replaced at 61k miles. The car was however in snap ring range, but had already had the snap ring failure and the transmission replaced at ~59k miles. This new transmission was suppose to be a non-snap ring range transmission, but as I learned last week, anything can fail.

In the past 4 months I had driven the car 7000 miles to and from work everyday. Last friday while backing out of a parking spot I heard a pop (thinking I just backed over something on the ground). Put it in first and started driving away. Shifted to second, then as I approached the stop sign I let the engine drag down. The shifter rocked about an inch and the transmission made some unpleasant grinding noises. As soon as that happened, I knew that the snap ring had broken. Here is the damage...

Pieces of snap ring

Metal Shavings (from aluminum transmission casing?)

Inside Transmission (looking at end of what remains of the snap ring)

The wheels for the FD have to wait it seems.

Talk to Nick at Applied Motorsports. He's the best NSX Transmission guy out there and does all of our race transmissions. Time to get your gears and synchros WPC treated!
