ICEs produce large amounts of waste heat. If we could harness that heat and convert it into electricity it could be used to reduce current draw from the alternator and drag on the engine. The electricity could possibly drive electric motors in a hybrid. I just read this article and started thinking about the applications in the automotive industry.

BMW created a system roughly two years ago to extract thermal energy from the exhaust. I think they were able to recover like 500W of energy. The technology is there, and I have an alternative idea to the BMW system, but the cost of the systems don't justify them, yet.
