I think Xtrac developed a system for the poorer teams, I didnt know the idea was abandoned. It would have helped pass car development.

yeah, sucks that they ditched it. It was basically costs of development. But I think it added a cool element to the racing, not to mention the pass car development. I think Ferreri is planning on implementing a KERS device on a variant of the F450 (F430 replacement).

hopefully it doesn't catch fire like Kimi's car in China!

I think the interest in tweaking hybrids will definitely be there- anything you can do to expand the efficiency of an engine for more performance can also be turned around to make it more efficient to get better fuel economy. The same improvements can appeal to both the speed junkie and fuel miser camps. I know for sure that I've always been intrigued with the idea of getting an old Insight and dropping a turbo on it.

The LHT K20 Insight with over 200whp and pulling 55mpg+ is interesting- speed and economy all in one nice tidy little package.

Trends will probably shift this way pretty soon.

Hopefully the nutjobs get voted out of office and the replacements repeal or soften the current proposal. Otherwise I envision myself leaving my trend of buying brand new cars in the future.

Changing a little bit subject.
A Prius with a 2JZ?....lol
If the 2JZ is too heavy (which it is)....a 3S-GT should do the trick.

that is one example, ferrari and mclaren/mercedes use battery/capacitor-based designs that have a suprisingly small generator/motor bolted to the engine.  it actually almost looks like a normal alternator.  there was an overview of one system in the latest "racecar engineering" magazine.
