...and of course with pneumatic valves, you can have full cylinder cut.

Don't they only use pneumatics as a return spring? I was chastised about a year ago on this forum when I suggested that F1 cars use pneumatic valving. The valve timing is still controlled by a camshaft if i'm not mistaken.

You are probably right! Just ignore my statements

I have been very interested in full electronic valves, as you can have perfect idle and the lumpiest of cam up top. I thought Mercedes in the past 10 years thought about it in production?

kreimer, while the 90% open throttle body position would have to cover pretty much the entire part-throttle range, F1 cars don't spend too much time at part throttle based on the datalog Mark shared from that one track.

Mark, full electronic/soleniod controled valves have been tested on some big commerical diesel applications and maybe some gasoline.  The problem that I know of from ~5 years ago was the system required some really high voltage.  So not doable on the current 12V architecture of the normal car.  I don't know if any such system has made it beyond prototype phase.

I know that this is true, but what I was mostly talking about was the start, pit limiter, behind a safety car, that sort of thing. Those situations require a fairly high degree of control over the power output. How about in the rain? Seems like it might be tough to get this system to work purely on fueling and ignition adjustments.
