i did some looking and all i could find was info on if you were buying a new car what oil to run.  well im not buying a car im finishing up rebuilding my sr20 with forged internals and what nots and couldnt figure out what oil to use.  i know not to use synthetic oil, but im not sure if i should run detergent oil or non detergent oil.  i have also herd of using diesel oil while breaking in an engine.

I am using regular off the shelf Valvoline 10w40 for my break in on my 4G63. It's at 150 miles and so far so good

I plan on swapping over to synthetic Valvoline 5W40 diesel when the break in is complete.

Though i keep seeing 20w50 recommended for my motor....i dunno if i could run something that thick when "cold" My oil pressure on cold start is already 67-70psi and drops to 35-40psi when warm on 10w40. Ambient temps for me are at the coldest 80*F

I'll be running Shell Rotella 15w40 (Diesel oil) on my motor for the break in. When I switch to synthetic, I'll be running Royal Purple like I always do (had 200k on my stock SR running royal purple before I tore it apart for the build).

ok i think im going to go with some rotella for the break in.  as for normal i run amsoil or royal purple, i try to keep run a SL rated oil.  i would run rotella all the time, but i get a good deal on amsoil, and royal purple

I suggest you run Motul break in oil. Its high in ZDDP and phospates/Zinc. Essential for any form of break in both solid flat tappet or hydraulic equipt. I use this oil in ALL of the engines I build and it absolutely without a doubt the best oil you can buy to break in a new/fresh engine. Contact any of your local Motul dealers or a dealer online to snag some up. You will not regret it!
