In Part 1 of our Wheel, Brake and Tire miniseries, we ordered a set of SSR Professor SP4 wheels for our RX-7 from Tanabe and were patiently enduring the two month wait for them to be built in Japan. During that time we fitted our car with a Stoptech Trophy big brake kit (in Part 2) hoping they would clear the wheels.  Right on schedule our wheels arrived and we were able to pick them up from Tanabe's facility in Torrance!  In Part 3 we’ll finally see how close all our guesses were to being “good enough”!

Ever since our projects, Project FR-S and Project STI got the Stoptech Trophy kit on them and we felt how amazing and confidence inspiring those brakes were, we HAD to have them on the FD.  After all, it IS our flagship project and that nickel finish is just way too bad ass and EXPENSIVE looking!  Stoptech makes a Trophy Big Brake kit for the FD RX-7 and those are the brakes we alluded to in the last article that our wheels needed to clear!

A couple of annoying sharp eyes on our last update a few weeks ago revealed that we had some KW suspension bits on our RX-7, so we've been forced to get off our lazy butts and write about them, some SuperPro bushings and a bunch of Improved Racing suspension goodies we put on as well in our attempt to make Project V8 RX-7 not only corner as well as it goes straight, but also remain tolerable and civil for daily driving.

Project MKVI Golf TDI: Let's Tow!

One of the things we noticed on our two trips to Europe in the last few years is that there are NO pickup trucks on the roads like you see all over here in the United States.  There are some luxury type SUV’s running around but much more common are “estates” or what we call station wagons and lots of little cars—our Golf being a popular choice.  So how do people haul around all their crap?  Trailers!  We don’t want to say most, but there are a lot more cars in Europe with trailer hitches and pulling all sorts of trailers of all different sizes around.  It makes sense though, how often do most pickup truck users USE their truck for hauling stuff around?  Probably not every day for most people.  So why not have a car when you want a car that gets good fuel economy, carries around people comfortably and can fit into tight parking spaces most of the time, and then when you want it to be a pickup truck, hook up a little trailer!  Well that’s what we aim to do with our Golf.

Project V8 RX-7:  Part 14 - Going Wide with Rocket Bunny's new FD3S Widebody Aero Kit

If you follow us on our Instagram or Facebook page (and if you don’t why the F not?  seriously, click up there on the top right of the page and connect!) you know we received one of the first batch of FD RX-7 Rocket Bunny kits to come into the states!  If this seems out of character for us, it is—never in our history have we put a bodykit on one of our project cars—and for good reason, most of them look terrible, are molded poorly and are difficult to install.

Project Honda Ruckus - Part One

Enjoy a Throwback Thursday to one of our very first projects!  In typical MotoIQ fashion we decided that our Ruck was going to need some help in the suspension, handling and brakes department before we increased the power to help keep things safe.  We had almost rear ended cars due to weak brakes and ended up doing a flying W by hitting a water dip at 35 mph on the street. Although this sounds somewhat comical, it was not safe and had to be addressed.

Project MKVI Golf TDI: Dieselgeek "Panzer" Heavy Duty Aluminum Skid Plate

In our last update we were impressed so much with our Dieselgeek shifter we took a look at some of the other products Dieselgeek makes for our MKVI Golf and found a nice skid pan or as Dieselgeek calls it—Panzer Plate.   We’re not sure if the name is paying homage to the old German tank or the literal meaning of the word meaning “armor” but we get it…  It’s a tough ass piece of aluminum bent to fit underneath the engine and protect all the vital stuff that’s vulnerable to impact now that we’re riding considerably lower than stock.

Project MKVI Golf TDI: Dieselgeek Sigma 6 Short Throw Shift Kit

In our LAST update we brought the torque and horsepower of our little oil burning Golf up 30% and 24% respectively!  Before that we sorted out our wheels and suspension.  The most glaring problem we had left in our daily driver was the row-boat shifting of the stock 6 speed manual.  Installing a short-throw shifter is a very common modification drivers do to improve the interaction with the vehicle and in most cases is fairly easy to do.  We looked no further than Dieselgeek, a small company out of San Antonio, Texas and their Sigma 6 short throw shifter kit for our MKVI.

Project V8 RX-7: Part 11 - Finishing the Driveline

The end is in sight!  Only a couple of things left on the TO DO list and the most glaring is our driveshaft and rear end.  Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a really big deal; you just get up under the car, take a few measurements and head to your local driveline shop where they can either modify your old driveshaft or build a whole new one.  But we've got a few other things in mind!

Project V8 RX-7: Part 10 - Power Steering

We want power steering!  Even though our RX-7 is pretty light at 2,843 pounds with 3/4 of a tank of gas (to be exact), doing 3 point turns in the neighborhood or negotiating parking lots sucks.  That suckness is compounded by the smaller 330mm Sparco steering wheel we're using.  Some argue you get better steering feel at higher speeds without power steering, but the best argument for NOT having power steering in your V8 converted RX-7 is that it’s a buttload easier to just plumb a bypass line on your power steering rack and ditch the power steering altogether.

The title picture already gave it away, so I’ll save the prose, it’s time to build an exhaust!  This isn’t going to be a sissy grandma exhaust either like on Project G35 whose owner couldn’t stand how loud the Berk exhaust they originally installed was… in fact, it's the same folks at Berk that are gonna kick it up a notch and help us make a super bitchin’ set of pipes that’ll make children cry and leave no question in any Rotard’s mind that our dead Wankel was replaced with a big ol' hunk of American Iron aluminum!

Hey guys!  Long time, no write.. I'm sorry.  We've had a lot going on and recalling the last episode of Project V8 RX-7 I hastily titled it “Bringing the E-ROD LS3 to Life (Almost),” which unless we were going to do a lame “(REALLY Close Now)” followup article, committed us to have a running engine by the end of the story.  Unfortunately, there turned out to be a lot of things we still needed to cover before turning the key—so much so that our article woulda turned into a novella and lost the attention of even our most devout reader by page 12!  Thus, Project V8 RX-7 Week was born!
