Nissan Foria/Silvia

New Nissan S16 Silvia, Oh We Hope Not!

MotoIQ Staff Report

The gist of this story comes from Autoguide.com who in turn got much of the information from InsideLine.  Rumor has it that Nissan is working on a Silvia replacement.  When we first got this news we were ecstatic, an economically priced lightweight FR sports coupe, yeah!  Then we saw the pictures....

Nissan Foria/ Silvia
The nose gets its styling elements from the Nissan corporate sedan parts bin.  This looks too formal for this target market.  The high hoodline and blunt nose don't suggest sportiness or performance, rather heft and bulk.

It is rumored that the new S16 Silvia will be front engine and rear drive which is good but it will be powered by a 1.8 liter turbocharged engine with a class trailing power output of 200 hp.  Come on Nissan, with a turbo you gotta do better than that.  It has been our contention that Nissan has forgotten how to build a proper 4 cylinder engine ever since the demise of the SR20DE and its variants.  Nissan, don't save money using some crappy Renault based POS 4-cylinder like the disgustingly lame MR series motor that you put in the Sentra that we bet this new turbo motor is based on, it's false economy and doesn't ring true for your target customer. Maybe you should just buy the Mitsubishi 4B11 for this car. Ghosn might just go for that.

Nissan Foria/ Silvia
The fender vents and greenhouse suggest Aston Martin but without the sexiness.  The high beltline continue a theme of heft and bulk.  These cues also make the car look stubby.  Sporty it is not.

The chassis is supposedly a shortened version of the FR-L chassis that is used by the 370Z and the G37 Sedan.  Let's hope Nissan doesn't cheap out and somehow ruin that with lame stuff like McPherson struts or, gasp, beam axles.  The target weight is 2800 lbs which is nice if Nissan can reach this goal.

Nissan Foria/ Silvia
Suicide doors didn't work for the RX-8 and Saturn.  Don't copy them Nissan!

The aspect that we find most disappointing is the styling.  The styling is supposed to be loosely based on the Foria Concept car which to us is very ugly with the charm of the new Ford Focus or maybe the loser second generation Q45.  We hope the styling is VERY LOOSELY based on this car.  Come on Nissan the reason why the RX-8 isn't selling very well is its somewhat avant garde styling.  Don't one up Mazda in weirdness.  Look toward the Z or the old Silvia for inspiration and lineage DNA.

Nissan Foria /Silvia
The back has elements of the uber ugly J30 Infiniti that sold poorly.  Don't go anywhere near that Nissan!

With the taut sheetmetal that the upcoming Toyota FT-86 and the Honda CR-Z will be sporting you are going to be in trouble.  Is this the same design team that penned the horrible B16 Sentra that is so ugly the rental fleets won't buy it?

Nissan foria/ silvia
Our parents might have liked this interior.  That's bad for a sporty car Nissan.

Nissan if you are listening, give us a small car, front engine, rear drive 2+2 hatchback with a 2 liter I-4 turbo making around 260 hp.  Give it a tight coupe styling, you know how, you make the G37 and 370Z.  Price it in the low 20k range and watch them fly out the showroom door.

Nissan, Ignore the artsy fartsy people at NDI and give us a modern version of this, the S15 in case you forgot.  It will sell in droves if its priced right!

A few Nissan product planning folks read MotoIQ.  Readers, comment below and tell them what you want!  Save the Silvia.

This car is ugly. Just ugly.

When I first saw it my thought was ugly Saab coupe, no wonder they're on the verge of going out of business. I own a S13 and a Z32 so I have a thing for Nissan coupes but not this one.

The car is heinous.

Nissan, just don't give it a shave and a haircut like you did when you revised the Sentra, throw it away and start over. Do it right or don't build it at all.

isnt "cool dork" an oxymoron???... the car is hideous .. its looks like a cube smashed togather with a GTR .. but its not just nissan the whole world car market seems to be making hideous cars.. go back to the basics make a car for the driver not the suits and tie..

That blue thing is ugly. If they're going to use the Z platform, then make a mini-Z. I'd buy it.

This concept is ugly! It might be forgivable if they crank the horsepower up and add the other go fast bits and keep the price under $30k. Oh and if you are reading Nissan please at least design the powertrain to handle moderate power increases ;-)

It's not just ugly, it's FUGLY! It looks like they took the GTR roof and slapped it on a bar of soap.

par for the course as of late...... the taste of vomit is still fresh in my mouth...... Maybe with a beefed up QR25DET it would make some decent power....... but it'd have to be making around 400hp to start to make up for the horrible styling.

Nissan was all about this project, then dropped it, the market segment heated up and to keep from being left out, Nissan brings this to the table..... of all the school kids standing in a group waiting to be picked for the team, that fat ugly kid is going to get picked last.......

P.S. Nissan, noone likes the grills, the dumb headlight and tail light theme that is littering the current line up. Look at some classic lines and curves........

I don't get it.

The B13 is still sold in Mexico, there is a 2010 model........ bring that up to US safety standards, do it in a 2 door, rebadge it as an SE-R, put the new QR25DE that's in the B16 Spec V, keep the price around $14-15K and you'd have a winner. Maybe not a high volume high profit car, but defiantly one that would stir the market a little and not make my want to buy a Korean car. Take a page from the Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, play book. I know you found your comfort area in the soccer mom, metro sexual, college age girl, gay male market, but you can really do better, because as piss poor as this car is, as much as saying it isn't possible probably makes it possible, you probably couldn't do much worse.

wow...that is a POS. I would love to be able to buy a turbo 4cyl front engine rwd car for around 20k.

I'll try to be nice and just say to Nissan: "Please fire and stab the people responsible for this. This thing will not only be slow and ugly, it looks like a crossover suv with a chopped-top. And not in a good way AT ALL! If this thing goes into production, I will remove the Nissan badges from the two I own now."

^^^I completely agree w/ the "Fugly" commit above. This car will FAIL.

Let the guys that designed the 370Z kick the crap out of these other morons.
This is sad...

Ill start with letting NISSAN know that I'm really disappointed in their latest work....like the 370Z or even the R35?
Why can't they go back to what they did with the S13/4/5's?
As a S-owner(13),that S16 is a car I wouldn't touch.Nissan should work on taking back the top spot of sporty/affordible RWD cars, since I'm not too much of a fan of the Genises Coupe of even the new "Hachiroku"....I might be young(19) but I would definitely call myself Old Fashioned.
So Nissan, please don't dissapoint with the new S16.

This sucks. This doesn't even look like a sporty car.

I wonder if the funny shaped cars we are getting nowadays have anything to do with safety/crash regulations.

Dear Nissan,

Please remove one of the rear pillars and advertise the car with zoot-suited yuppies bobbing to bad trance music.

PS: Bonus points if you throw on some vintage British wire wheels and a 300C grille.

PPS: Please make it available only as an automatic

"wow...that is a POS. I would love to be able to buy a turbo 4cyl front engine rwd car for around 20k."

From the sounds of things.... it'll be Toyota/Subaru coming out with that, and it looks a hell of a lot better!

Hey, you guys remember how Honda released pics of the Crosstour on Facebook and got 99.5% negative responses:

Well, this thing is twice as ugly as the Crosstour!

Wrecked, yes, pedestrian crash rules are part of the reason cars are getting bulky looking. The front end has to be blunt to pedestrians get thrown clear and break their heads on something other than the car.

But that's not this car's only problem. The other one is fear of the coupe. The coupe market died a few years ago and everyone is afraid to get back in. Mazda took this lesson to heart and made the RX-8 something the marketing people couldn't call a coupe. Nissan seems to be scared of the same thing.

Lessons like this are often over-learned based on misinterpretations of sales results. Nissan has been afraid of turbo 4s for years because the CA18DET-powered S12 200SX didn't sell well in the U.S. Their marketing people couldn't understand the SR20DET was a different beast. They also didn't understand that the S12 sucked regardless of its overpriced, underperforming turbo, and most importantly, they didn't get that the market had completely changed since the S12's flop.

By the time they figure out what to do with the S16, I'm sure it will be too late.

what the F**k, that thing is terrible. If they have any desire to sell any cars don't build that P.O.S.

I figured Ford would have had the sense to paint the revived Mercury Marauder in a darker color. Oh well. It'll still look right at home in taxi cab livery so I guess it doesn't matter.

I threw uf in my mouth a little when I saw that turd. For the love of god, someone kill it with fire

My S13 Sil-Eighty gets complments all the time. 20 year old styling still looks cool and modern. This looks fat and boring. If you chop the bottom of this car off at the bumper it will look a lot better.
