A Gearhead's DIY: Toddler's Wheelchair

A toddler floor seat. A cutting board. Bicycle wheels and castors. What is happening at MotoIQ! There is no motor anywhere and no licence is required! Well, it is creativity at its finest. First off, I have to confess that this is not my idea. There are a bunch of different versions of this DIY wheelchair floating around on the Internet. Is this one better than them- probably not. I am going to tell you about it, however, and that is where this toddler wheelchair is different. This DIY Todder wheelchair is not intended to be my grandson's prime form of transportation. The intent is to give him a means of travel at floor level, to encourage him to use his arms (which are gradually gaining strength), and because his parents and I think it is cool. The first step was to look for the necessary resources. There are a few different brands of infant and toddler seats that are designed to be stationary while the little one sits in it and watches the world go by. Collecting the tools is an important aspect of any project and, unfortunately, I had everything required so nothing new had to be purchased. Usually when planning out a project I figure out at least one piece of equipment that is a must have and, if it is not in my garage already, is a must purchase item.

Sneak Peek: Porsche Experience Center, Los Angeles

There’s always some type of awesome race machinery in the lobby, and the cars are changed out every so often. The Integra Type R is and always has been an amazing car. Over the seasons that I have been writing about James Houghton's Type R, I have been amazed at how this driver and this car come back year after year, both of them better and faster, and have been pulling off amazing victories. He may not have always finished at the top of the podium, but he is absolutely on the podium and in contention! Lavigne Motorsports has focused upon fine tuning every aspect of the K-Tuned Integra Type R to enable it to be competitive. James is the first to admit that the competition with his long time friend and neighbour, William Au-Yeung, has been incredible and has pushed him to develop the Acura Integra Type R. Rumour has it that more cars are being built to tackle James and Will head on. There is no question, this is a moment in Time Attack where James is absolutely battling time. The real question is how does he keep getting faster!

Project Infiniti G37S: Suspension upgrade KW Variant 3s and Eibach Swaybars

This is a pretty exciting step for us with this project because we can finally add some good handling characteristics to our car to go, along with the more aggressive wheel and tire setup. Despite all the beefy chassis parts that the G37 shares with the 370z, the G is starting to tip the scales as a bit of a porker and tossing this car into a corner really unsettles this car and the driver. We wanted to get the chassis setup right so that it’s fun to drive aggressively without sacrificing comfort- which is a lot to ask for.

Rebuilding a Nissan R200 Differential to Be More Drift Happy With Z1 Motorsports!- Part 1, Installation

Recently, I took my 350Z drift car out to a practice event at Irwindale's Thursday Night Drift. As I was coming out of a turn, I clutch-kicked in third gear, and heard a BOOM, stopping the car right in its tracks. Upon inspection, we discovered that my diff had fallen out of place! The bolt holding my differential to the subframe snapped, causing the diff to fall coming completely out of the car, which then caused my driveshaft to explode at the u-joint. Fun stuff. 

This all ended up being a blessing in disguise because I was in desperate need of rebuilding my diff for competitive purposes. In the 350z platform, the final drive gear ratio is a 3.50 which had been handicapping me significantly during competitions. Sensei Mike Kojima has been monumental in setting up my Z this year and one of the biggest changes was dialing in more grip.

Project C7 Corvette Stingray Z51: Improving Stopping With a Chevy Performance Big Brake Upgrade Kit

When we did our baseline test of Project C7 at Buttonwillow Raceway configuration 13 CW, we were pretty impressed with the stock Z51 Stingray's on-track performance. We felt the chassis was set up pretty well for the wheel and tire configuration that came on the car, and the whole chassis calibration was matched to the amount of tire the stock car had and the power level of the engine.

Project Golf R MKVII: Fluidampr Test

The Golf R is back for another round of modifications. Now that we have addressed the suspension and feel the car is handling the way we want it, it is time to move on to the powertrain. We are not entirely sure which direction the powertrain modifications will ultimately go, but the best place to start is by making sure our foundation is solid. In this article, we are going to be installing the Fluidampr crankshaft pulley, as well as doing some baseline Dyno testing on Project Golf R.

Project DC2 Integra: Truing up the Suspension with Whiteline

In the last edition of Project DC2, we greatly improved our car's suspension by replacing the ancient, worn out Koni Yellow shocks with some state of the art street KW Suspension Double Adjustable Variant III coil-overs. When paired with a stock front anti-sway bar and the excellent Comptech rear anti-sway bar that came with the car, we had a well-balanced combination that worked pretty well on the track and the street.  

All was good, but we wanted to go through the entire suspension and replace all of the old and well-worn rubber bushings in the car with new, hard polyurethane parts from Whiteline. This would bring our suspension up to snuff with the current best stuff out there.

Wrench Tip: How To Plug A Tire

Flat tires suck. They're always a hassle and they ALWAYS come at the most inopportune or annoying times. As a former tire changer/ tire repair man, I've seen all sorts of weird stuff in people's tires: nails, screws, screwdrivers, spark plugs, large chunks of metal (I'm not making any of those up either).  In the old days I'd be going to a repair shop to fix my tires, but these days, I just do it myself.

Project AP1 S2000: Installing Hasport AP Differential Mounts

Our Project AP1 S2000 is a daily workhorse. It’s almost 17 years old and is coming up on 140,000; the car has been a good reliable daily driver that sees some spirited driving every now and then. 

Recently, we discovered that the differential mounts on Project AP1 S2000 were torn and started to leak. Instead of going back to the OEM liquid filled mounts, we decided to just go with a more solid mount. After driving Project AP2 S2000 and feeling how well the Hasport mounts felt, it was a no brainer to go with them again!

Project GD STI: Making the Front of the Car Stiffer with Ultra Racing

In the last installment of Project STI, we had greatly increased the chassis stiffness with a full complement of Cusco braces. From our EVO project, we had found that on the CT9A chassis, the braces that did the most were the fender braces that add reinforcement from the strong door hinge area to the top of the shock towers. From this experience, we wanted to add similar braces to our STI.
