VIDEO: 2011 Nissan Juke vs. 1971 Datsun 510, Dave Coleman's Rally Beater
MotoIQ Staff Report

In an attempt to reassemble the late great SCC dream team, we have been trying to get Josh Jacquot to write for us for years but he won't.  We can hardly blame him though, he writes for the megasite insideline.com as a real job where he gets paid more than the pittance we could offer him.  However here is the next best thing.  At Insideline, Josh decided to pair up Dave Coleman's rally beater 510 against a late model Nissan Juke in a off road rallycross ish showdown in a story which is something like we would have done back in the day...

Dave's car although ugly is a fully developed and winning rally car.  At least the base 510 it has evolved from is a handsome classic, the patina of 40 plus years and 10 years of neglected competition has made the car either ugly or cool depending on what your sense of esthetics is, like a leading man type aging well or a bum lying in a ditch depending on what sort of stuff floats your boat...

The Juke has no excuses.  It is sort of appealing to drive but we can't get over looking at it.  To us it looks like a toad or maybe something worse.  Whoever does the styling of Nissan's small cars of late needs to be kicked in the jimmy and shown the door.  When looking at the Sentra, Versa and Juke, it seems like the cars were designed to be especially ugly and unappealing but maybe that's just us.

Anyways check out Josh's story here and pretend he writes for us!

You might be surprised at the outcome of the evaluation.

Was it me or was Josh driving the Juke more conservatively with less sideways time? I remember reading about Dave's rally-beater Rim of the World race in SCC. Obviously set up way differently. I'd bet Dave's beater's more fun. Jaquot, come back over to the dark and dirty side (at least on a guest writer status). Cool video. Thx.

Cool video. Not sure I would call it a fair comparison. I mean my Mini Cooper is far faster than the Mini Cooper of yesteryear and my Impreza is light years ahead of a Subaru 360.

cheers

Who said anything about it having to be fair? Wish I had roads and a car I was comfortable to beat on like that!

Anyone else notice Inside Line does a better Top Gear race than Top Gear America? By the way, love the monkey bobblehead in the back seat of the beater. And it would be great if Josh could do a guest spot here or there. Any word from Oldham about writing here?

This article ruined the Juke for me even more than it ruined itself.

Right on about Nissan's small car styling!

Compared to the competition, since 95 Nissan has produced nothing but drab and unremarkable looking cars for that segment. (I'm being charitable here.)

Why so asleep in the styling studio for so long? Isn't anyone paying attention to the competition?

And now the Juke. Oh, my!

Just when you thought the Pontiac Aztek (an acknowledged styling failure for GM) would hold top honors forever, the Juke comes along.

And that wasn't the last of it!

Nissan now owns what may well be the most talked about styling screw up of the decade. The Nissan Murano convertible!

What could management have been thinking?

Un @#$%^&* believable!

Honestly, I was expecting the 510 to win this one. Sure the Juke has an AWD with a more powerfull engine, but the diference in weight between the two cars, the fact that the 510 is race prepd (or at least looks like it) with the roll cage optimising the chassis, probably with dirt tuned suspensions and those dirt tires, makes this older car quite challenging.

Dave, do you have any plans to upgrade/service/take photos and post here?
Man, that's a cool reading in the making, I'm sure.

In the meantime, if you have the time, do take a look at how the less powerfull Datsun 1200 sold in my country back in the 70´s is still being raced nowadays:

Any article with the Rally Beater is great, it was always my favorite back in the SCC days as was technobabble. Dave should post a link to the speedvision clip of his heroics, love the manpower pushing scene. I'm also surprised there is no post here from the Beaters's father, I am left to wonder why...
