AES Auto: A Civic for Street and Strip!

Two years ago, we first met the AES Auto team at Mission Raceway Park. That chance meeting has resulted in many hours of joint work on projects and the enjoyment of a great group of car enthusiasts. At the centre of it all is the shop - AES Auto. In the shop is the quarter mile car. The AES Auto Civic is an ongoing work in progress. It's currently a ten second car that runs consistent 140 mph passes in the quarter mile. It's a street car. And, it has served as a tow truck to move disabled vehicles about the shop yard.

How Magical is Black Magic Intense Wheel Cleaner? We Test it Out!

With a word such as 'magic' in the name, it's easy to assume that you're getting some really good wheel cleaner. We are slightly more skeptical, however, and we had to see for ourselves. What if Black Magic wheel cleaner didn't live up to its name?

Project S550 Mustang GT: Installing Airlift Suspension Digital V2

In planning the next phase of Project S550 Mustang GT, we began looking at suspension kits that would give the versatility of a comfortable daily diving experience and still provide a somewhat capable track setup. Before we move forward, it’s also important to revisit our goals with this project. This is NOT an all out performance track car, but rather a daily driver that we want to transform into a competitive street car. It’s something that will see light track day action, as well as something that we can show off at local car shows. Given this direction, this build will come to points where compromises are made for street-ability and comfort. While a race-spec coilover kit would be a great solution for the track, daily driving this kit would be less than desirable. Having made this mistake on previous daily drivers, we were determined not to do the same with this project!

anti lag rocket beyond the dyno

External Combustion Rocket Anti Lag System + JDM Spec C Impreza STI

The external combustion anti-lag "rocket" combustor was used on the factory Prodrive built WRC STi Subaru cars to improve the EJ20 engine's inherent mediocre torque and engine response. The rocket is so good that a version of it is still in use today in the 2012 Japanese Super GT GT300 STi BRZ which also uses an EJ20. Last time I wrote a teaser article, but this time we'll take a look at some of the details of the rocket combustor anti-lag system as it applies to my buddy Ben's JDM Impreza STi Spec C street car over in the UK.

Sure, there are small and even portable lift options that don’t require a ton of space, but for those times when you want full access to the underside of your car with the wheels supported, ramps are the ticket. Speaking from experience, however, I’ve never had much confidence in the plastic ramps you can pick up from chain stores, and those can cause a hassle when it comes to getting both ends of the car up, let alone the limited ground clearance they offer. I’ll start off with a little bit of background for those that don’t know me. I occasionally drive the Professional Awesome Evo, and in 2013, the first version of the car was wrecked at Road Atlanta. Wise decision or not, I still had a loan on the Evo and there was a significant balance still remaining at the time of the accident. The monthly payment was nothing to scoff at and therefore, I like to consider those years I spent paying off that loan as my time in the "Valley of the Poor." It left me a changed man. I went in a naive money waster, I came out a tightwad.

Event Coverage: Hagley Classic Car Show

Fun fact: The DuPont company is based in Delaware.  In fact if you travel the Wilmington/Greenville/Hockessin area, the landscape is dotted with past and present DuPont family households.  The past DuPont estates are amazing: Beautiful tracts of East Appalachian land dotted with 150+ year old buildings.  Many of the original 1800s estates have been turned into public museums to help preserve the history of the DuPonts.  One of Delaware’s crowning jewels is Hagley Museum which is one such former estate: In its previous life, Hagley was the first powder mill founded in Delaware by E.I. DuPont in 1802. Every September 600 cars show up to Hagley and are put on display.  The only rule is all vehicles must be at least 25 years old.  Some amazing automotive history turns up each year and we were able to snap some pictures of the event.

Global Time Attack - Pro Championship - Road Atlanta

I am sitting on the plane on the way to Atlanta to cover Global Time Attack’s first Pro round of 2014 and reading my coverage of last year's event. As I read my own words I am excited by what happened and I think to myself, how in the hell do we top THAT? My fingers frantically type this while the angry toddler behind me uses my seat back as a jungle gym. Perhaps he too was reading last years coverage, or perhaps he was just pissed he was cramped up in this tin can. I share his sentiment as I also want out of here... Partially because I want this damn kid off my back but mainly because I am a total geek for time attack. 

Like last year, Global Time Attack shares Road Atlanta with the 2nd stop for the Formula Drift series and that brings out a lot of people and a lot of cars. Looking at the entry list  gets us excited as the classes are full of some of the top names in the sport from nearly every corner of the country and even some of our friends up North eh’. Time Attack is not dead... It's right here on MotoIQ.

I remember the first time I strolled onto a BMW lot back in the mid-90s to see the new E36 M3 in person. I fell in love with everything about it, including some of the factory wheel offerings. The wheels were considered large at the time, with 17" diameters, and no one knew that APEX would have their 18" x 9" Arc-8s within wheel wells. The M3s were also delivered from the factory with the then-impressive Michelin Pilot MXX3 tires, with no one ever thinking that the "all-season" Pilot Sport A/S 3 would not only perform even better, but allow you to drive in all but the most foul of winter weather conditions.

Let’s face it, autocross is hugely popular. There is a statistic floating around that the SCCA Solo II Nationals is the largest motorsport event in North America. While I have not audited that fact, I can tell you that a LOT of people love the sport. In fact, my very first interest in automotive performance was an autocross event that I attended and competed in after being encouraged by a friend to give it a try. After that event out came the stereo and in went suspension modifications. That car was Project 200SX and the year was 1999. I have always had a penchant for the sport but after spending more time at the road course, life sideswiped me and my participation in AutoX events waned; that is, until recently.

Learning the Craft: Grassroots Drifting

Just outside Madison, Wisconsin lies Columbus 151 Speedway.  It's a family owned semi-banked quarter mile oval, a classic Midwest circle track, and home to Friday night stock car races throughout the summer.
