We Visit the Nitto King of The Hammers Powered by Optima Batteries! Or, the Idiot's Guide on How Not To Go Off-roading

by Mike Kojima

So we were ecstatic when Nitto Tires and Hellwig Products, makers of cool suspension stuff and supplier for several of MotoIQ's truck project suspension goodies, invited us out to the desert to spectate the Nitto King of The Hammers Powered by Optima Batteries off-road race.  Although we are newbs to the whole off-road truck thing, we know enough to have heard of the event and know that it is an extremely tough test of man and machine combining the rigors of both off-road desert racing and bolder crawling together in one event.

Blood, sweat, tears. Words that are often used to describe the intense struggle that is in any form of motorsport. Dai Yoshihara's 2018 Formula Drift Rebuild

by Mike Kojima

After 3 years of Formula Drift competition, our team had pretty much developed the BRZ chassis to where we were satisfied with its performance. After some post-season testing to try out a few new ideas we decided that with the development stable, it was time to completely go through the car, repair some minor damage incurred during three seasons of hard use and to rethink the car's layout.

Unpimp My Ride: Transforming a Modded BRZ Into a Civilized Daily Driver with Pedders, Verus Engineering and ARK Designs

by Mike Kojima

Not all of us want a race car for the street. Although many of us are hardcore track day participants, autocrossers or canyon runner nuts, there are a lot of enthusiasts who don't want a super edgy race car with a license plate as a commuter or daily driver.

Building an FA20 Race Engine for Michele Abbate: Part 1- Planning the Internals

by Mike Kojima

We have known Michele Abbate ever since she was a college student doing track days with her trusty Mazdaspeed Protege and have followed her career as friends as she has progressed up the ranks from recreational driver to a Scion Sponsored driver in SCCA's GT1 class.

Up to now, Michele has been running her car with a bone stock FA20 engine at a very low boost street blower drive ratio. Although this is decent power, she needs a lot more to be competitive in one of SCCA's fastest classes for production-based cars.

We Look Inside Fredric Aasbo's Papadakis Racing Toyota Corolla iM Drift Machine

by Mike Kojima

It is really hard to build a competitive car in Formula Drift nowadays. The rules set is mature, and the competition is ruthlessly tough. When even the best teams develop a new platform, it can take a whole season to sort a new chassis out. A radically different chassis can take a couple of seasons for even a top team to get competitive. Not so for Papadakis Racing and their Rockstar Toyota Corolla iM that they built for 2015 Formula Drift Champion, Fredric Aasbo.

Project Tundra: 5000 Mile Evaluation of Nitto's New Ridge Grappler Tires!

by Mike Kojima

We were very pleased with the Nitto Terra Grappler tires that Project Tundra had been running the last 7 years. We had over 60,000 miles of towing, supercharged burnouts, daily driving and off-roading on them- including a day of driving hard around Willow Springs Raceway. We were very pleased to note that they still had at least 70% of their original tread and still worked quite well!

Daily Driven, HKS Supercharged Scion FR-S Autocross and Track Car

by Frank Ewald

Simon Chan's Scion FR-S attracts attention. Just sitting in a parking lot or driving by on the street, you will take a second look. We certainly did - and then contacted Simon and asked if he was interested in doing an article for MotoIQ. He was and so a meeting was set up at River's Edge Road Course, part of Mission Raceway Park in Mission, B.C. where he would be participating in a track day. A nice balancing point from the Autocross event that first brought this FR-S to our attention. The weather was initially overcast with some light rain on the way to the track, however, by early afternoon the sun was drying off the track and, by mid-afternoon, was out in full force. This was certainly a more balanced day than the early spring autocross event which blew us away with snow in the first few hours before the sun also came out to stay.

Japanese Cars That Don't Suck

by Mike Kojima

I pissed a lot of people off with my Japanese Cars Suck article a few weeks ago, where I expressed dismay at the boring state of the Japanese car industry. Japan Inc. seems to be producing either the uninspired transportation device or the trying too hard, over the top stuff that seems like something out of the Fast and the Furious or Transformers franchises.

Building the FR-S FA20 engine with Stay Crushing, Prepping the Cylinder Heads With Portflow Design

by Mike Kojima

In the last installment of our FA20 engine build, we covered the parts that we were going to use for the insides of the "Stay Crushing" FR-S. With the components covered it was time to start on the engine build in earnest. We decided to begin with the cylinder head and enlisted the help of Tom Fujita at Portflow design to perform the core work on our head.

The Blitz Electronic Supercharged Toyota Yaris!

by Mike Kojima

The Toyota Yaris has been a vehicle that has pretty much been universally panned by the performance aftermarket. Can you really blame the aftermarket though, the Yaris was not designed for any sort of fun nor would it win any beauty contests.
