Building an FA20 Race Engine for Michele Abbate: Part 1- Planning the Internals

We have known Michele Abbate ever since she was a college student doing track days with her trusty Mazdaspeed Protege and have followed her career as friends as she has progressed up the ranks from recreational driver to a Scion Sponsored driver in SCCA's GT1 class. 

Up to now, Michele has been running her car with a bone stock FA20 engine at a very low boost street blower drive ratio. Although this is decent power, she needs a lot more to be competitive in one of SCCA's fastest classes for production-based cars.

Project GD STI: Making the Front of the Car Stiffer with Ultra Racing

In the last installment of Project STI, we had greatly increased the chassis stiffness with a full complement of Cusco braces. From our EVO project, we had found that on the CT9A chassis, the braces that did the most were the fender braces that add reinforcement from the strong door hinge area to the top of the shock towers. From this experience, we wanted to add similar braces to our STI.

Project GD STI: Getting Rid of Chassis Flex with Cusco

The GD STI/WRX had what was considered to be a very stiff chassis when it was first released internationally in 2000. The new Impreza platform was built to be much stronger than it predecessor and used much of the experience gleaned in rally competition to build a chassis that was over 100% stiffer than its predecessor. However, that was 17 years ago, and the design that was once the leading edge in unibody chassis integrity is now something that is just average.

Project Bugeye GDA WRX: Fixing the Clutch with Exedy

Poor Ian, MotoIQ's FNG's daily was his trusty Bugeye GDA WRX. The WRX has given many years of faithful service, but since joining the MotoIQ crew, Ian's commute has gotten much longer and the miles were taking their toll on the car which has over 200K miles. To make matters worse, on his way to work, the car sprung a huge oil leak and oiled down the super old clutch, and Ian barely limped into the MotoIQ garage.

Project GD STI: Making More Power with Cobb Tuning and Precision Turbo Part 2!

When we last left off with Project GD STI, we had just installed our drop-in ball bearing center section upgraded Precision Turbo. In our opinion, this is one of the best drop-in, non rotated mount turbos on the market for these cars, however, we wanted to be able to turn the boost higher. This brought the need for a tune utilizing Cobb Tuning's Subaru Flex Fuel System.

Project Autocross BRZ - Dialing in the KW Clubsports

It's always funny how things work out when you look back. Dialing in ride heights, alignments and suspension settings is really no different. It seems to be a long road where it involves a lot of time tuning everything in to maximize what you can get out of your suspension. Adding more knobs to turn does not make it any easier but it does allow you to fine tune the way your suspension works. Then, when you finally hit that point when it all comes together, it’s amazing. You become one with the car, as it feels like it is an extension of you performing feats that some people can’t comprehend. When you look back at what it took to get there you have to laugh at how you sometimes really need to take the long way there. Chalk it up to character building or the gaining of wisdom.

Project Autocross BRZ: Testing the Beastronix 86Nanny

Building the MotoIQ Project Subaru BRZ is always an adventure as is with building any car to a specific purpose. As the builder you always look for new products that may help the car or the driver to be more consistent. One thing many drivers of the BRZ, FR-S and GT86 have always complained about (besides the lack of torque and power) has been the intrusive traction (TC) and vehicle stability controls (VSC) built into the electronics of the platform. Subaru, Toyota, Nissan and other manufacturers have now been dumbing down our driving experience in the name of “Safety” or “to make is easier for the common person to drive” for years. With this in mind those of us who choose to push these cars to the limits or who find these nanny controls too intrusive for even daily driving are now forced to find workarounds to disable these nannies.

One such unit has been developed to literally be the easy button for this problem in the BRZ, FR-S and GT86 by Beastronix.

Building the Subaru VA WRX clutch and Flywheel with ACT!

All wheel drive cars are traditionally hard on clutches. With tons of traction, launches involve a lot of clutch slippage. Fast shifting and even downshifting are all harder on the clutch due to the increased traction of 4 wheels.  With this in mind building a daily driver heavy duty clutch for a street car is always a challenge. 

It just so happened that our friends at ACT were wrapping up development of a clutch and flywheel combination for the late model VA WRX when we were at their office and we thought it might be a good opportunity to show what is deep inside ACT's WRX clutch which shares many design features with all ACT clutches.

Project Autocross BRZ:  Finding More Grip with KW Clubsports

It has been some time since we last saw the MotoIQ Project Autocross Subaru BRZ.
Over the winter months here in the Midwest it gets really cold, our roads turn to asphalt crater fields and those of us who like to keep our cars free from rust allow them to hibernate for winter.
During this time we plan for the next season acquiring parts and pieces that will allow us to attempt to become even more competitive. During our latest off season there was much discussion on what would allow this project to take another step forward.

Project VA WRX: Enhancing Grip with ARK Design R5 Wheels and Nitto NT05 Tires

Our VA WRX is becoming quite impressive thanks to the gains we have made in its performance.  We are beginning to think that it will soon be knocking at and even exceeding the performance envelope of the much more expensive STI.

Since we have been working on the brakes and suspension of our STI killer VA WRX, it was time to take advantage of those parts with some bigger, grippier tires and wheels to accommodate them. We got the right hardware for the job with some wider wheels from ARK Design and bigger tires from Nitto Tire.

Project Legacy GT: Part 2 - Bolstering the Drivetrain

Finding the right balance of performance and civility when upgrading a street car can be difficult. It all comes down to finding the perfect compromise between daily drivability and “because racecar”. Go too far and a car can become too loud, too rough, and too unreliable. With the goal of eventually increasing the power output of our Subaru Legacy GT wagon beyond what the stock VF40 turbo can efficiently produce, we knew that we would need to upgrade some of the other components in preparation. Our clutch disc and pressure plate were the first items on the list of things to replace. While everything was apart for the clutch job we decided to also replace the heavy stock flywheel with a lightweight alternative, to bolster the transmission with help from Moore Performance, and reduce slop with some polyurethane bushings.

Our STI has been driving around as a daily for two years now with all of the typical bolt ons.  It has been reliable at 318 whp with good driveability and fuel economy on regular pump gas, in other words a hassle free car that is very easy to live with.  Of course if good was enough, more is better and we could not leave good enough alone.

Project VA WRX: Upgrading the Brakes with Stoptech Part 2 - Getting it Done!

In our last edition of Project VA WRX we showcased some of the preliminary testing involved for the design validation of our new big brake kit by Stoptech.  A baseline for the stock brake system was established using Stoptech's test protocols. The brake testing establishes the brake balance, stopping distances and fade characteristics of the stock brakes so improvements can be measured and there is a record of the validation testing.

Project Legacy GT - An Introduction

I’d like to get something off my chest. I am enamored with the idea of hopped up, ass kicking, rip snorting, high performance wagons. V8-powered shooting brakes, high revving hot hatches, and bi-turbo estates (for our euro readers) all seem to get my juices flowing. I can’t quite pinpoint exactly why that is, but there is just something so scandalous about an unassuming five-door giving more pedigreed performance machines a run for their money. Now, I need you to understand that I am absolutely smitten with this car, and have been for the past several years. It is, in my eyes, the perfect vehicle. So please excuse me if I become a bit over-zealous at times. Enter Project Legacy GT, it is Subaru’s mid-size performance vehicle which is equipped with the usual all-wheel drive system, 5-speed manual transmission, and a typical 2.5L turbocharged flat four engine.

Project VA WRX: Upgrading the Brakes with Stoptech Part 1 - Getting a Baseline

Our Project VA WRX does not have the trick Brembo brakes that come standard on its big brother the STI.  It does however have brakes that would have been considered to be great just a few short years ago. Although the front and rear calipers appear to be pedestrian sliding calipers with two pistons on the front and a single piston for the rear brakes, the rotors are big. The front rotors measure in at 316mm in diameter and 28mm thick while the rear rotors are 288mm in diameter and 8.5mm thick. The pads are also large for OEM type calipers.

Project Autocross BRZ: Swapping The Feal 441's to KW V3's

Since the first installment some time ago things have changed with the BRZ. KW has graciously supplied us with KW V3’s for use on this Project BRZ. With that in mind the 2014 SCCA Spring Nationals was the last event for us on the Feal 441’s. So we went out and gave them the last “Hoorah”. We brought home a solid 2nd and 4th place finish at the ProSolo and another solid 2nd place finish for the National Tour.
