Inside Matt Field's Drift Assassin Nissan S14

by Mike Kojima

We have been watching Matt Field for the last few years.  Matt originally was a hero of the "keeping it real" stretched tire scene but has evolved from the time we first noticed him in 2010 to become a fierce competitor whose time has come.  Matt has always fielded (bad pun) really nice looking cars and his latest ride not only looks damn good but is packed with some of the latest state of the art drift technology.

The Road to Speed Week Part 2: The Progress Continues

by Chuck Johnson

When last we left off, Project 240SX LSR was under the knife again, in the midst of an entire electrical system and engine management revamp. In this update, we'll continue to follow 5523 Motorsports, Specialty Car, and the rag tag Team MotoIQ as they continue the build with parts from AEM, Fastbrakes, and Earl's Performance Products.

Road to Speed Week 2014 Part 1: The AEM Infinity 8 EMS and AQ-1 Data logger

Road to Speed Week 2014 Part 1: The AEM Infinity 8 EMS and AQ-1 Data Logger

by Chuck Johnson

If this past year's Speed Week taught us anything, it was that Project 240SX LSR's electrical system needed a complete overhaul.  Our previous harness had been built in haste during the few days leading up to Speed Week 2012.  At the same time, we also knew that if we were going to top the land speed record we set last year, we needed traction control, data logging, and the ability to control any parameter of the engine whether we were on the dyno or on the dry lake beds of EL Mirage or Bonneville.  We found the answer to our needs in the form of AEM's AQ-1 data logger and Infinity 8 stand alone programmable EMS.

Nerd's Eye View-a Look Inside Darren McNamara's Falken Tire Nissan S14

By Mike Kojima

Falken Tire's drift team consists of Justin Pawlak, Dai Yoshihara and Darren "DMac" McNamara.  Hailing from Ireland Darren has been doing well this Formula D season in a Nissan S14 built by Scott Dodgion of SPD Motorsports.  Darren had a tough 2012 season which started off badly with a hard crash at the season opening round at Long Beach, breaking his foot and totaling his beloved Saturn Sky which had been his trademark car for several years.  Nicknamed the Bullet, the Sky had the reputation of being one of the fastest cars in Formula D.

Nerd's Eye View: The MCA Suspensions "Hammerhead" Silvia S13

Story by Eric Hsu, Photos by Jeff Naeyaert and Josh Coote at MCA Suspension

The MCA S13 finished in 3rd place overall at the 2012 World Time Attack Challenge which is pretty amazing considering it's rear wheel drive. That's no simple feat in an event dominated by all wheel drive cars, big budgets, and world famous JDM tuners. What got the MCA S13 there was a great build by Murray and Josh Coote and their crew of friends with attention to detail exactly where it was needed. Of course great driving by ex-A1 GP Kiwi driving ace, Earl Bamber, doesn't hurt either. You've seen how crazy this thing looks and you've heard how fast it is. Now come and check out what's underneath the skin of the MCA S13 as I walk you through the car in detail. Best of all, IT DOESN'T HAVE AN LS ENGINE IN IT!

Sneak Peek: S13 Tube Chassis Drift Car, Part I

By Khiem Dinh with a heavy dose of Gary Castillo influence

A few of you have probably heard of Gary Castillo of Design Craft Fabrications, you know, the guy who can fab just about anything.  He’s got a buddy named Greg Kruse.  Greg is from the land down under and has his own company GK Tech producing S-chassis drift parts.  Greg is the type of guy who gets motivated to make stuff for one simple reason, because he wants it.  In this case, he wanted a tube chassis S13 for drifting.

Keep Racing Fun- Bonneville Speed Week-2013

By Mike Kojima

Every once in a while we do a behind the scenes story about some of our Motorsports adventures and stuff we do on the road.  Although this might look like we're living the life according to what a lot of our readers think, when you try to perform on a high level, it actually takes a lot of blood, sweat, hard work, and passion to do what we do.  We are often too busy making things happen in the Motorsports world to document our adventures but this time we decided to focus on one of our main projects for this year: Editor Chuck Johnson breaking the H/PS world land speed record at Bonneville Speed Week 2013.

Project Land Speed Racer 240SX: Ain't No Rest for the Wicked

By Chuck Johnson
Photos by Joe Lu

The last chapter of Project 240SX LSR left Team MotoIQ sleep deprived and malnourished with just a handful of days to spare before Speed Week 2012.  However, the ever persistent team had just completed the install of a donor SR20DET and the fabrication of the Spearco air to liquid intercooler system.  In terms of the powertrain, things were looking up.  On the chassis side though, there was still a long list of modifications that needed to be completed to meet SCTA rules.  While we are currently preparing for Bonneville Speedweek 2013, read on to see the final push we made for last years' Speed Week.

The Hail Mary: The Build Story Behind Speed Week Part 1

By Chuck Johnson

Defined as a very long, low percentage pass made in sheer desperation, the term Hail Mary is perfectly fitting of Project 240LSR’s journey to Speed Week. While Eric Hsu and "Team America" were making their own Hail Mary attempt to make it to World Time Attack, the perhaps lesser known, yet equally determined team behind MotoIQ’s Project 240LSR were simultaneously in pursuit of their own Hail Mary pass. Let’s face it though; this is par for the course. If it wasn’t for race day, almost every race car would be forever damned to a hellish state of incompletion. This is the story of how we made it.

Project 240SX Land Speed Racer:  Racecar Livery, the Function Behind the Form

By Chuck Johnson  Photos by Joe Lu

I’ve put together a lot of cool project cars over the years and would like to think that with each one, I push the envelope a little bit further and get a little better at what I’m doing.  I’ve learned a lot from building racecars and a good portion of that learning in most recent years I’d say, is far beyond that of just turning a wrench.

Global Time Attack Road Atlanta 2013 Doug Wind SRT4

Global Time Attack - Round 1 - Road Atlanta

By Wes Dumalski

Quality images by Sarah Forst and mediocre shots by Wes Dumalski

Attacking time is a funny thing… All sorts of things happen during these 2 day race weekends and no one knows what mother nature or Newton has in store for us. This past weekend at Road Atlanta both of these personas had a chance to show us who's boss and utterly prove that we are in control of very little. In this case the Saturday forecast brought likely promises of rain and when the teams hit the track to sunny skies they were in a fury to set down fast laps as no one knew (not even the weather people; do they ever?) what would unfold. As luck would have it the rain held off and as teams pushed ever further it was Newton who would prevail on this day. Through 11 wins in a row and numerous track records the Professional Awesome EVO VII would turn its last laps in anger, its life cut short by Road Atlanta.

Project 240SX Land Speed Racer:  Flat Out on the Bonneville Salt Flats (Video)

By Chuck Johnson

It’s really easy for people to discredit going fast in a straight line.  Hell, I myself have been guilty of snickering at the thought of "run what you brung" night at the drag races.  I mean how much skill could it really take to hold a steering wheel straight and mash on the throttle for a ¼ mile?  The truth is though, it doesn’t matter if it’s driving in a straight line or around the same damn circle for hours. Click on the link to see the in-car video!

Modified StreetCar Shootoout Full Race S14

2013 Modified StreetCar Shootout - The Rules, The Cars, The Big Tease.

By Wes Dumalski and Sarah Forst

Like all good stories, this one starts on the airplane while on line for the shitter. I hear a voice come up behind me “my GOD this woman won’t shut the hell up”... I turn to fund the animated Bill Caswell and we begin bantering about this woman on the plane who had been talking about absolutely nothing at all for 2 hours. I am on this plane and talking to Bill Caswell because I could not get a refund on my Expedia package and rather than let the tickets go to waste I figured I could still head to Arizona and cover the UMS tuning time attack event and find some good feature cars. As luck would have it two complete car nuts are on the same plane heading to the same place to do the same damn thing; be geeks.

Project LS S13: Part 1 - Getting the Chassis Ready

By Mike Kojima

Our latest project started as an accident.  The S13 that we are using started off as Chuck Johnson's, one of our writers, daily driver.  It was a really nice S13 with a sano SR swap, built well with nice parts.  Then a lady driving a late model Acura, amazingly with no insurance, decided to run a stop sign unbelievably in her own neighborhood smashing into Chuck and taking out the front end of the S13.  Even though the damage was minor, Chuck's insurance company totaled the car.  Chuck bought the car back from the insurance company and most of the good parts were swapped into our Project S13 LSR.
