$20,000 at Stake: The Speed Ring by Motovicity!

by Frank Ewald

Photos by Motovicity and M1 Concourse

The Speed Ring by Motovicity is the richest Time Attack event held in North America. The fastest time of the weekend headed home from The Speed Ring with $20 000.00 cash in their brand new briefcase. Plus the ultimate bragging rights as the fastest Time Attack car in North America - backed up by a big, shiny, and hugely coveted 'Ultimate Badass' trophy. This is the second year that Motovicity has held The Speed Ring and it is, without a doubt, a not to be missed event.

2017's Speed Ring took place in the mid-west at Michigan's new M1 Concourse. It was a two day event with Saturday being a standard time attack event while Sunday was a crowd pleasing, Touge-style bracket race with the best two out of three laps coming out on top as the winner. Motovicity teamed up with GridLife to build the event which is just two years old. This is a quick overview of The Speed Ring with a focus upon the cars that ran in the Touge Bracket Racing. Did you miss The Speed Ring this year? Plan for it next year. And if you are overseas, start looking into booking your shipping container now so that you will be ready. The North American's are ready for you!

K-Tuned Integra Type R Update: The Road to Super Lap Battle

James Houghton and His Integra Type R

by Frank Ewald

The Integra Type R is and always has been an amazing car. Over the seasons that I have been writing about James Houghton's Type R, I have been amazed at how this driver and this car come back year after year, both of them better and faster, and have been pulling off amazing victories. He may not have always finished at the top of the podium, but he is absolutely on the podium and in contention! Lavigne Motorsports has focused upon fine tuning every aspect of the K-Tuned Integra Type R to enable it to be competitive. James is the first to admit that the competition with his long time friend and neighbour, William Au-Yeung, has been incredible and has pushed him to develop the Acura Integra Type R. Rumour has it that more cars are being built to tackle James and Will head on. There is no question, this is a moment in Time Attack where James is absolutely battling time. The real question is how does he keep getting faster!

Chris Boersma: Record Breaking, 600 HP Turbo B-Series K-Tuned Civic

by Frank Ewald

Global Time Attack. GridLife. CSCS. East Coast. West Coast. Canada. Winning! New Record!

That is the article, folks, and you can stop reading there if you want as that essentially summarizes what happens when Chris is out racing. Of course, there is much that goes on before, during, and after each of this winning outings. So much so, that even though we just wrote about the Civic shortly after the SuperLap Battle of 2016, it is time for a mid-season update that includes some of the off-season preparations. So do not leave, as I was just joking about that being all there is to read. There is a ton of stuff that Chris has done to the newly sponsored K-Tuned Civic that you will want to know.

Motor Massive, Global Time Attack, 86 Fest: Everything You'll Want In One Place

by David Kim

Toss in a little Global Time Attack into the mixing bowl, add a little 86Fest into the mix, include a touch of Auto Club Speedway, then sprinkle in everything motorsport to make yourself a delicious treat of Motor Massive. Enjoy on a beautiful, but very hot, Sunday afternoon- the collaborative affair between GTA and 86Fest brought one massive automotive event to Southern California, and yes, I was probably a little hungry at the time of writing this, but this event catered to literally all forms of automotive interests. Want a slice of high performance Time Attack? Sure, it’s only a few steps this way.

Global Time Attack Round 3: Willow Springs International Raceway

by David Kim

Big Willow at Willow Springs International Raceway is an unforgiving 2.5-mile road course that favors high powered vehicles and significantly rewards those with the finesse and confidence to push the limits of speed. Unsurprisingly though, this exhilarating track has claimed some of the finest engineered race vehicles throughout its creation since 1953. The first turn 1 and last turn 9 is unforgivingly quick to dish-out punishment for any driver error, and does not play nice with any chassis that is improperly setup for the high-speed corners. However, it is a challenging battlefield that is a favorite among many drivers that appeared at Global Time Attack’s 3rd Pro Am round of the 2017 season.

Global Time Attack Round 2: Buttonwillow Raceway Park

by David Kim

Global Time Attack returns to Buttonwillow Raceway Park to challenge the legendary 3.1 mile road coarse for GTA’s Pro Am Speed District round 2 event. With the weather predicted to hover around a beautiful mid 70 degrees throughout the race day, drivers arrive ready to attack the clock, reset records, and set a new standard of performance in their respective classes.

From completely stock Ford Mustangs and lightly modified Subaru BRZs, to the heavily modified unlimited class where one could stumble upon a J35A1 swapped Honda Civic Coupe built specifically for the circuit, a plethora of different types of cars can be found at any Global Time Attack event. Yes, you read it correctly, a stout V6 Honda Odyssey motor- in a Civic! This is the series where not only the world’s fastest and most dedicated drivers come to play, but a series where an enthusiast can find some of the most creative tuners in the industry. With this in mind, welcome to Global Time Attack! Let’s get started.

The Blackbird Fabworx Morpheus Miata!

by Mike Kojima

The cars created by Moti Almagor of Blackbird Fabworx have always caught our attention. More for less has always been the theme his creations. The Blackbird Fabworx cars have always eked amazing speed out of stock, very low powered engines. Lightweight, meticulous care in chassis setup, balanced brakes and carefully thought out aerodynamics have had a harmonious interplay in developing incredible speed from very little horsepower.

Honeywell Garrett Boost Festival 2017: Part 1- Global Time Attack

by Karla Pestotnik

Global Time Attack is known to be the premier Time Attack series in Northern America, and arguably, in the western hemisphere of the globe. This isn’t MotoIQ’s first rodeo at another wildly successful GTA event, and it is far from being Global Time Attack’s first highly publicized, sold out competition. GTA teamed up with Honeywell Garrett for Boost Fest 2017, taking place at Southern California’s Streets of Willow Springs Raceway. Hundreds of teams and spectators made the trek to cold and windy Rosemond, CA, in order to pursue and find out who can put down the quickest lap times.

Drivers that are willing to risk it all for one hot lap are heavily rewarded at this track, however, isn’t that the very nature of Time Attack? This is why we love the sport, so let’s see what crazy competition there was and who brought their best!

Sneak Peek: Global Time Attack Cars Round 1

by Khiem Dinh

The first round of Global Time Attack 2017 was held at Streets of Willow as part of the Honeywell Garrett (formerly Air Research, Allied Signal, Garrett, Turbo by Garrett, Garrett by Honeywell, and maybe a couple other names I’m forgetting) Boost Fest. The thing we like about the cars and drivers at GTA is it’s still all very grassroots. Not many people with crazy budgets, a lot of homebrew economic performance enhancers, you know, stuff your average car nut can relate to in their own garage.

Terrorizing Time: Integra Type R

by Frank Ewald

James Houghton has been to Buttonwillow three times over the last four years. You are forgiven if you assumed he's been there every weekend practicing, because his 2016 time was almost six seconds faster than his 2015 time! He knows the track, but as he is from Canada, it is far from his home track. He took almost 6 seconds off of his 2015 lap time and yet his horsepower levels are almost the same as 2015. There are many other aspects of the car that have been tweaked between then and now and in this article we will look at some aspects of this fine tuning. It is not an understatement to say that James eats, sleeps, and breathes racing. He is constantly looking at ways to expand his capabilities as a driver. Over the years he has been carefully honing his Integra Type R into the incredible machine that it is now- a car that terrorizes in all the Time Attack events that it enters. Forget the fact that it is running in the Unlimited Front Wheel Drive class, as he is right on the heels of or beating the RWD and AWD competition! That this Type R has evolved from an incredibly solid street car into this record breaking beast is a testament to the hard work that James and R-Division's Eric Lavigne have put into this project. Driver, Car, and Mechanic combine to create a team that is, well, almost unbeatable.

Attacking Time with the LYFE Motorsports Nissan R35 GT-R

by Mike Kojima, action Photos by GTA and Snap Studios

When Cole Powelson set out to build an R35 GT-R he initially didn't have the ambitious plans to build one of the world's fastest time attack cars. The 2012 GT-R originally was built as a modified but streetable time attack car which was run for fun.  Then the car was repurposed and underwent a metamorphosis, eventually being rebuilt into the sophisticated machine that appears on our site here.

by Frank Ewald

Chris Boersma has been preparing himself and his car for years. There was no mistaking the look in his eyes as he sat in the hot sun at Buttonwillow. He was ready for another victory. He was confident entering Super Lap Battle. You have to be confident to put out money on a flight from Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Los Angeles, California. Self-assured to load your car in a transporter to be sent across country. Comfortable with your ability as a driver to take on the best that North America has to offer in the world of time attack. Chris, backed up by wins and records in events across two countries, felt that he had a great chance for another victory.

350Z Track Monster - from Bling to Brute in 12 Easy Steps!

by Frank Ewald

In just a few years this 350Z has transformed from a pristine example of a Nissan 350Z to a mean and lithe example of an incredibly effective track car. Aesthetics being tossed aside in the aim to gain that fraction of a second to attain the top of the podium. The question that I asked, and likely some of you are wondering also, is how did Mike go from being a hard parker to being one of the most focused time attack drivers that I have met. I mean, he is so intent and tenacious at the track that it is difficult to have a conversation with him. When the competition is over, he is more than ready and willing to talk about his car and his journey into the world of Time Attack. Sorry for misleading you, though, it actually took a lot more than 12 steps to build this race package and none of them were easy!
