Project S2000 AP1: Deatschwerks Fuel Pump Install

All was not right with our Project AP1 S2000. It was making some louder than normal sounds that were coming from the fuel pump. The car would struggle to start as if the car had low gas or no gas at all. After some forum research and some diagnosing with a fuel pressure gauge, we had come to a conclusion that the fuel pump was bad.

After having the car for 5 years now, it was expected for it happen eventually. Since we got the car from the auction for 3200 dollars, there were no records of the fuel pump being changed or of any (well there was some records for tires bought in 2003) maintenance at all. With that being said, we started to look at fuel pumps on the market. In the end, we decided the go with Deatschwerks DW200 fuel pump (9-201-1000).

Project AP1 S2000: Installing Hasport AP Differential Mounts

Our Project AP1 S2000 is a daily workhorse. It’s almost 17 years old and is coming up on 140,000; the car has been a good reliable daily driver that sees some spirited driving every now and then. 

Recently, we discovered that the differential mounts on Project AP1 S2000 were torn and started to leak. Instead of going back to the OEM liquid filled mounts, we decided to just go with a more solid mount. After driving Project AP2 S2000 and feeling how well the Hasport mounts felt, it was a no brainer to go with them again!

Zestino Gredge 07RS Race Track Tire Test

It would be pretty comical if we saw Usain Bolt running the 100 meter dash in the Olympics without shoes. He would most likely not be breaking any world records or winning any gold medals without shoes on. Undoubtedly, a good pair of track spikes has helped Usain gain the traction he needs to push himself forward and eclipse the run in record breaking pace. The same can be said for someone looking to whip up some quick lap times with just wheels and no tires on. A good set of high-performance tires can make or break the handling capabilities of any vehicle. This concept applies even more so on a purpose-built vehicle designed to push the limits of lateral g's around a race track.

Vince, our FNG, drives a Honda S2000 that serves as his daily driver.  The S2K takes him to work and school day in and day out.  However the Honda also serves as a track day vehicle seeing duty at Willow Springs, Buttonwillow and Cal Speedway.  After serving reliably for 80,000 miles the clutch suddenly went out on Vince on his way to work.

CRX 2000: Turbocharged & Rear Wheel Drive

I cannot imagine how Aaron felt when he pulled out the plasma cutter and watched it bite into the firewall. A combination of excitement, adrenaline, and pure fear that the car may never see the road again would be what most of us would experience. And most of us would have never made it to the point of having it on the road. That confidence in his own knowledge and creativity is what I am sure allowed Aaron to move forward with a massive hole in the CRX’s firewall and floor. Using a custom support that bolted to both the intake and exhaust on the S2000’s engine, Aaron was able to hang the drivetrain – both engine and transmission – into position in the car to make the necessary fitment.

Irene Makeover – Part 3: Suspension, Initial Bodywork and Motor Build

In parts 1 and 2 of the Blacktrax Performance S2000 Motorsport Makeover coverage, Irene, the Blacktrax Performance S2000 was stripped down to the bare shell, was seam welded to increase rigidity, had the doors and hardtop roof gutted for weight reduction, and received a full multi-series legal racing cage from the front suspension to the rear suspension at CT Engineering in Rancho Cordova, CA. Then, the car was rolled away to be put back together between Blacktrax Performance in Milpitas, CA. and 5Fifteen Autobody in Burlingame, CA.

Blacktrax Performance S2000 Motorsport Makeover: Part 1 - Basic Chassis Preparation

To start off 2014, the TunerPlayground and BlackTrax Performance team have huge plans for overhauling their time attack Honda S2000, nicknamed “Irene.”  In the past few years, Tom Tang, TunerPlayground founder, has showcased just how capable he and the car are at events such as Global Time Attack at Buttonwillow, where it ran a 1:56 in the CW13 configuration, all while retaining street-driven status. Above is a “before” photo.

This year, however, Irene is going all out. TunerPlayground Motorsports is aiming to participate in wheel-to-wheel, hill climb, and time attack events. These include, but are not limited to: NASA USTCC, Honda Challenge, SCCA Run-Offs, Global Time Attack, Redline Time Attack, Super Lap Battle, MotoIQ MPTCC, Hoopa Hill climb, and eventually, even Pikes Peak.

Project S2000: Part 19 - Ram Air!!! Plus Hot Air Testing!

Did I mention there would be more hood hacking? Why yes I did. Somewhere along the other 18 parts of this project, I noticed the stock air box looked relatively well sealed along with having a location ideal for ram air. Ram air is used on practically every sport bike you can buy to coax as much power as possible from the engine. Even cars such as the Corvette Z06 and Dodge Viper use ram air.

Project S2000: DIY Vented Hood

The destroyer of all track vehicles is excessive heat. Whether it is the coolant, various oils, or brakes, too much heat will lead to failures. On Project S2000, we’ve already addressed the engine coolant and oil temperatures with an upgraded Koyo radiator and Earls Temp-A-Cure oil cooler. These heat exchangers depend on airflow to in order to remove heat from the coolant and oil. No airflow means no cooling, hence the need for fans when the car is sitting still. One way to improve the airflow through the heat exchangers is to minimize the resistance to the air exiting from behind the heat exchangers. For the vast majority of street cars, all the air has to dump out the bottom of the engine bay. So how do we minimize the resistance to airflow? By increasing the area the air has available to exit. In this case, we’re venting the hood.

Back in March while covering the Modified Streetcar Shootout, this S2000 was tearing up the track. The car was clean but sounded dirty and upon inspection under the hood, the engine looked like it was put together by techs in white lab coats. What struck us about this car was the very exotic appearance! Surely this one off piece of art must cost a bajillion dollars and be impossible to re-create! As we looked closer we were absolutely shocked by what we found within this build.

Attacking time is a funny thing… All sorts of things happen during these 2 day race weekends and no one knows what mother nature or Newton has in store for us. This past weekend at Road Atlanta both of these personas had a chance to show us who's boss and utterly prove that we are in control of very little. In this case the Saturday forecast brought likely promises of rain and when the teams hit the track to sunny skies they were in a fury to set down fast laps as no one knew (not even the weather people; do they ever?) what would unfold. As luck would have it the rain held off and as teams pushed ever further it was Newton who would prevail on this day. Through 11 wins in a row and numerous track records the Professional Awesome EVO VII would turn its last laps in anger, its life cut short by Road Atlanta.

Project S2000 - Making a More Responsive Drivetrain

The AP2 generation of S2000s were made a bit cushier and street friendly compared to the AP1s for the general American consumer.  A larger displacement engine along with shorter gearing were specified to give more torque at the wheels which Americans desired.  However, Honda also matched a heavier flywheel and modified the clutch system with both negatively impacting the level of track aptitude.  Step 2 of Phase 2 is to shift the drivetrain bias more towards the track side of the equation compromising some everyday livability for better performance.

Project S2000: Phase 2, More Grip

"Where has Project S2000 been" do you say?  I've been having fun and driving the piss out of it.  I had completed Phase 1 of the build which was to make a fast, reliable, and uncompromised daily driven street car that could be driven at the track without fear of breaking anything.  Well, the car is no longer my daily driver, so I have decided to commence with Phase 2.  A Porsche GT3RS is my philosophical car build benchmark; while it CAN be driven on the street, it's not exactly a car that you would want to daily drive as it introduces compromises to DD duties in order to improve track performance.  Phase 2, Step 1 = more grip and protecting the engine against increased lateral Gs.
