Curly's Corner: A Nerd's Eye on Formula 1 - Australian Grand Prix

by David Zipf

It’s been five months since we got to talk Formula 1...and quite frankly, that’s five months too long. With Easter nearly on us, it’s finally time to polish up those new paint jobs, warm up the 1.6L hybrid V6s, and get racing once again. Formula 1 is back!

Squirrel Power: Making a Minibear Part 1

by David Zipf

It’s been a while since we talked about our little Suzuki FA50 runabout. You’d be forgiven for thinking it had been abandoned or sold. But fear not! Neither is true. In fact, this thing has been the perfect little around town commuter, running beautifully for the last year and a half. Aside from a minor oil pump problem, we’ve had almost no trouble with our little Suzuki. Unfortunately, it is still as slow as ever and we really need to fix that. And fix that we shall!

Nerd’s Eye View: The Cars of PRI

by David Zipf

PRI is full of cool and new speed parts, which the rest of the MotoIQ team is showing you.  But for a PRI newcomer, it’s the cars that really overwhelm you.  They are everywhere!  And, they are all amazing and varied, everything from rally demo cars to Drag Week veterans, to dirt track cars, to original Indy 500 winning racers.  We could fill a novel with the cars we saw, and in fact after walking the PRI floor for an entire day, I STILL hadn’t seen everything there was to see!  Note to self: plan for more vacation in 2018…

Project Vehicross Part 8: Pinion Angle 101

by David Zipf

It’s been awhile since we’ve done anything with our funky Isuzu project. There’s a simple reason for that: I was planning to replace it with a Mazdaspeed 3 (in 2016) and have a fun, practical, and incognito hatchback to replace the fun, tough, and weird Isuzu. Due to a series of unfortunate events (some relating to a lazy previous owner, and some relating to unfortunate shortcomings in Mazda’s quality), we decided to offload our 3 and keep the Isuzu. That meant dealing with some of the issues we’d been ignoring for months while we fussed with the Mazda.

Curly's Corner: A Nerd's Eye on Formula 1 - Malaysian Grand Prix

by David Zipf

Regular MotoIQ readers will know that I have a particular fondness for IndyCar racing. However, I also have a BIG passion for Formula 1. While the on track action can’t even begin to touch the excitement of the Indy 500, there is so much more to the sport than just what’s happening on track for 2 hours every few Sundays. In this new column (inspired by my appearance on the Cars & Popcorn podcast where we discuss the movie Rush), I will try to mush together all the big stories in F1 right now and try to turn it into a coherent narrative. If you’re a casual fan who wants to up your F1 nerd cred, you’ve come to the right place!

Wrench Tip: How To Plug A Tire

by David Zipf

Flat tires suck. They're always a hassle and they ALWAYS come at the most inopportune or annoying times. As a former tire changer/ tire repair man, I've seen all sorts of weird stuff in people's tires: nails, screws, screwdrivers, spark plugs, large chunks of metal (I'm not making any of those up either).  In the old days I'd be going to a repair shop to fix my tires, but these days, I just do it myself.

Event Coverage: Red Bull Global Rallycross Indianapolis

by David Zipf

MotoIQ and Global Rallycross go quite a way back. In fact, all the way back in 2009 Dave Coleman gave us a peek at the Olsebergs Fiesta engines and just a couple years ago our chief nerd was in the pits at the Long Beach GRC race and brought us An Inside Look at mountune's GRC Ford Duratec Engine. GRC is much like the circus: they pop-up in town, put on a show, and leave without a trace. Well, if you don’t count a bunch of skid marks as a trace. GRC has hosted a ton of new events in the Midwest this year including in Louisville, Memphis, and Indianapolis. I'm in Kentucky so attending the Louisville race would have made much more sense for me, but I was a bit preoccupied that weekend covering the IndyCar Grand Prix. So to get my rallying fix, I took the drive north to Indianapolis.

Event Coverage: 2017 Indianapolis 500 Presented by PennGrade Oil, Part 2

by Dave Zipf

We follow up after Dixon's mindblowing crash from Part 1 and continue to break down each wild scenario during the Indy 500. This was one of the wildest 500s we’ve seen in years.  It had everything: From huge crashes, to four-wide battles, mechanical intrigue, big name rookies and veterans, and a deserving dark horse winning in a shootout- racing really doesn’t get much better than it did at the 2017 Indianapolis 500.  It’s a great reminder, that there really is no place like Indy.

Event Coverage: 2017 Indianapolis 500 Presented by PennGrade Oil, Part 1

by David Zipf

There is no place like Indy.  It’s big, it’s fast, it’s narrow, and the track is like no other on earth.  Even in this modern, high tech world, winning Indy is one of the toughest tasks in motor racing today.  The cars may be much faster and more reliable, but winning Indy in 2017 is still just as tough as it was in 1911.

Event Coverage: 2017 Indianapolis 500 Carb & Legends Day

by David Zipf

If you’ve followed our coverage of the Indy 500 here for the last couple years, you may have been mistaken for thinking that there isn’t much to do on Indy weekend aside from...you know...watch the race.  But that is where you would be mistaken.  The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has dedicated a lot of time and resources into turning the Indy 500 into a three day event, celebrating tradition, speed, and teamwork.  If you’re planning to attend the 500, plan to call in sick and spend Friday and Saturday enjoying the sights and sounds of Indy.

by David Zipf

Week one of “The Greatest Month in Racing” started with left and right turns, kicking off with the IndyCar Grand Prix last week. This week, the right turns are abandoned and the focus is on nailing down the fastest time at one of the fastest tracks on Earth. One week of practice leads up to two days of qualifying for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 Presented by PennGrade Oil.

Tech Tip: How to Fix a Broken Mazda Door Handle

by David Zipf

It is important that we start off this Tech Tip be noting that it mostly applies to Mazda 3 owners, but also likely applies to 5 and 6 owners as well.  Mazda built the doors of all of these cars in a similar way.  If you own one of these vehicles (specifically the first generation from 2004-2010 or so depending on the model), you WILL have to deal with this problem at one point or another.  At some point your door handle WILL break, and you WILL have to replace it.  This will be a 100% failure rate over time and if you fix it early, it will make your life a bit easier.
