New Lancer OZ Rally? Not Quite an EVO X

Stephen Quinn who used to help out here and there at XS several years ago sent me an email telling me about a photo shoot he saw going on at Cal Poly Pomona (he's going for his ME degree I think). Just outside the quad at the CLA building, was a photo shoot of the new Lancer OZ Ralliart something or other. I think it's supposed to compete with the WRX and not the STI. Anyhow, here are some excerpts from Stephen's email:

"...We THINK this is the new Lancer OZ Rally edition because my friend swears he saw that through the lens of his camera on the back of the car. I did not get any rear views of it so I cannot say...The car looked like an Evo X to me from a distance but I immediate...

Cosworth, Ford, Audi, and Mahle

Cruising the web, I googled 'Cosworth'. On the first page, 'Mahle Powertrain' popped up. I clicked it and looked under history and there is a fairly detailed time line on Cosworth's history. For those of you who don't know, Cosworth Engineering was the company that Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth started back in 1958. There were many parties who bought and sold Cosworth throughout the years, but Audi purchased the entire Cosworth company back in 1998 and sold Cosworth Racing to Ford. The engineering, castings, and manufacturing units continued operating as Cosworth Technologies. In 2005 Cosworth Technologies was purchased by Mahle Powertrain. The division that we all know and love for ...

This may be old news to some of ya'll, but a buddy of mine's just sent me the link to this today. I'm not up to date in kiddyland (evo forums). AMS (the real one), the EVO tuners in the USA based out of Chicago, IL, has got their drag EVO 8 up to 1130whp on a Garrett GT42 @ 51psi of boost (I was told...ask AMS for details). I have no idea what kind of fuel that's on, but the tuner was wearing a gas mask which tells me they might be using methanol. Regardless, 1130whp out of a 4 cylinder is pretty buff. Martin and crew know their shit.

AMS EVO - 1130whp!

Clutches

I have always been a firm believer in multi-plate clutches, but of course it will always depend on the application. I noticed there seems to be a general lack of clutch knowledge. Here's a quick primer on clutch selection in the form of some Q&A's:

1. How high of an RPM will you be turning the engine?
OEM style factory replacement high performance clutches do have their place. Generally, OEM style stamped steel cover clutches are designed for just that: OEM applications. They are heavy, flexible, and are manufactured less precisely with larger tolerances. Because they are flexible, heavy, and tend to disengage slowly, they usually cannot slow the input shaft d...

EDMATIC

My buddy Yasu wrote a feature in this month's Carboy Magazine on Edwin Konishi - otherwise known as EDMATIC. Back in 1997 (if I remember correctly) Jerry from Pacific Rim asked me, "Hey, do you need anybody to help out at XS? I know a guy who went to high school with you, but he's like 3 or 4 years younger." This was only a year after Troy and I started XS and for our first year it was only Troy, Peter, and myself working nearly 7 days a week and somewhere between 12-16 hours a day. XS was growing and we did indeed need more help. Edmatic came on board in late 1997 or early 1998 (I don't remember exactly) and worked at XS for ab...

Boiling Tarzan

Last night I went to the Boiling Crab in Wetminta again with the Ark Design posse to get down and dirty with Viet/Louisiana style shrimp, lobster, crawfish, crab legs, chicken wings, fries, corn, etc. The original plan was meet at 7:30pm and probably wait 45 minutes or so to get a table. We were still waiting outside at 8:30 when we got a call from Tarzan on his way back from the Long Beach Grand Prix (chauffeured by Daiji from C-West USA). So we added 2 people to the reservation and they said it wo...

Pi-le of ECUs

Jeremy from track support moved into our office about a month ago even though he's never actually in the office. He's always out and about at various tracks all over the country doing track support for the Formula Atlantic series. Jeremy was in this Monday and I guess he was preparing for the last Champ Car race is this coming weekend at the Long Beach Grand Prix. I walked by his desk and saw a shitload of ECUs in a Pelican case. Looking more closely, I saw that they were [Read the rest of this article...]

Mine's R35 @ M-Workz

Steve gave me a call and told me he just unloaded the Mine's R35 GT-R from it's container. On my way to Formula D last Saturday, I stopped by M-Workz to check it out. It's primary reason for being here in the USA is for the filming of the Fast & the Furious 4, but I get the feeling Mine's is going to feel out the US market with this car. It is in a pretty mild state of tune, but the exhaust sounds fucking buff. I don't think there are any cats on it at the moment. It also has some Sachs coilovers, carbon kevlar Recaros, Takata safety harnesses, and probably the Mine's ECU reflash. Beyond that the car appears to be pretty stock.

RS*R Drift Scion TC?

My buddy Gary from Design Craft has done it again and built another crazy car. This time it's a RWD Scion TC with a 3SGTE VVT engine. With the HKS 3037 it does 400whp. Ken Gushi will be piloting the Scion for this year's Formula D series. I think Ken was wasting his talent in the Mustang anyways...

DaTruth is DaBomb

Once again, Damessenjah writes about some funny shit. DaTruth is Damessenjah's blog about everything that is undeniably true with the automotive tuning industry. He blasts ugly import models, wack ass Chinaman parts and companies, Meximas, magazine editors, etc. His ability to express the truth in well written prose is exceptionally perfect. Check out his current post on wack import models, but be sure to read all of his other entries for a good dose of laughter.

DaTruth Blog - Make sure to read the subtitles under the pictures for a good time.

BTW, while Damessenjah and I share many common beliefs, I

R35 GT-R V-Spec and MT Videos

Somebody sent me a link to Autoblog earlier today and they had some shots up about the V-Spec. Damn, it makes the standard R35 look like shit already. Check out the images here on Autoblog. Yeah that fucker looks mean with the different body parts, new wheels, and some ride height reduction. Some highlights from the rumors are below. I say rumors because who the hell knows until the car is released? It might as well be making 700hp for all we know if anybody is going to speculate:

Groove Armada

Saturday was a long day. It started with the alarm clock blasting at 5:20am. I had to go to the Performance Nissan meet to work the Cosworth booth at the Orange Show in San Bernardino, CA and meet at Ken's house at 6am. San Bernardino sucks ass. We rolled in at 7am and the bullshit rent-a-cop, wannabe security people decided to do a full on vehicle search on our van. Good thing they didn't find the 10 kilos of coke I brought to a car show. They made us throw away our water, sodas, and food because you had to buy everything from a wannabe King Taco stand called Taco Rico or some bullshit. How fucking dumb is that? Anyhow, so we set up our little display booth and waited for people to come...

C-West S2000 Sweeps Redline Time Attack

C-West USA, Design Craft (Gary Castillo who has had my S13 to build a cage for two fucking years and hasn't touched it yet), BC, and Greddy teamed up to modify the original C-West dry carbon S2000 for US time attack competition. This is the original car that used to compete in Japan, but it was sent over to the USA for C-West USA to use as a demo/marketing car. Two years ago it ran the (then) Primedia Time Attack at Buttonwillow and ran a 1:53:xx. At the time the engine was 100% stock, but the car was lighter than shit thanks to all the dry carbon parts. A 1:53:xx is very respectable for a car that made no more than 240hp at the crank. It won it's class back then with Tarzan Yamada driv...

RB26DETT Valve Springs

Since the BNR32/33/34 Skyline GT-Rs were only really available in Japan and a couple other parts of the world, previously you only really had the JDM engine parts to choose from. Now that I work at Cosworth, I hope to change that. Although we are buried with all kinds of other work, I try to squeak out RB26 parts when I can. So far I've managed to help crank out new con rods, bearings, head gaskets, and now valve springs (more coming soon!). It takes a bit to convincing to get the OK to design RB26 parts. The RB26 is now an old engine and we are only designing parts for the RB because it has such a huge following worldwide.

Having measured and analyzed nearly every Japanese ca...
