LA Auto Show 2017: Nerd’s Eye View – Unique Cars, Engines, and Things

by Khiem Dinh

The LA Auto Show always has some unique new vehicles that budding automotive companies want to show off. For example, this new Saleen mid-engine and turbocharged car. It’s got the right recipe in my mind for an awesome performance car platform. It’s good to see Saleen back out making products. The big OEMs sometimes like to show off a little flair too along with new technologies. Then there are the other random going-on stuff at the show which I find amusing.

Project SC300 Road Racer: Part 13 - Updating for Proper Fire Safety

by Erik Jacobs

Since we were starting to button up the car, it seemed logical to attack the fire system. But there's a little more that goes into planning a fire system than throwing some stuff in the car. In this segment of Project SC300, we'll discuss a few of the different types of fire systems, and show you how to properly install and route one.

Building an FA20 Race Engine for Michele Abbate: Part 2

So when we last left off, we were putting together some awesome parts for Michele's engine and were about to embark on assembling it. In the interest of long-term durability, we added a few tricks to our build over the last one we did for the Stay Crushing car.

Nerd’s Eye View: LA Auto Show – Go-Fast Vehicles

by Khiem Dinh

The motorsport scene has undergone large technical changes over the last half decade with the implementation of high-efficiency technologies. Some of the technology has shown up in concept cars. Some of the technology in road going cars have been eliminated from the race car version. Then there’s just good ole big displacement with forced induction on top. There was even a bit for the off-road guys.

Project S2000 AP1: Deatschwerks Fuel Pump Install

by Vincent Soto

All was not right with our Project AP1 S2000. It was making some louder than normal sounds that were coming from the fuel pump. The car would struggle to start as if the car had low gas or no gas at all. After some forum research and some diagnosing with a fuel pressure gauge, we had come to a conclusion that the fuel pump was bad.

After having the car for 5 years now, it was expected for it happen eventually. Since we got the car from the auction for 3200 dollars, there were no records of the fuel pump being changed or of any (well there was some records for tires bought in 2003) maintenance at all. With that being said, we started to look at fuel pumps on the market. In the end, we decided the go with Deatschwerks DW200 fuel pump (9-201-1000).

Project EP3 Civic Si: Why the Suspension Sucks and How to Fix It!

Since us MotoIQ nerds have a heightened perception of what is "an acceptable" level of handling in a car, we realize that we bit off quite a bit to chew with (arguably) Honda's worst handling Civic- the EP3 generation. What have we done to correct it and did it work? Watch to find out, with MotoIQ's chassis engineer, Mike Kojima, and test driver, Karla Pestotnik!

Project Golf R MKVII: Finding More Power with COBB Accessport

by Isaac Sandoval

In our last update on on this project, we started preparing for power modifications by installing a Fluidampr crankshaft pulley. That modification went much better than expected with the car picking up a few horsepower in the process. Despite that small bump in power from the pulley install, having near stock power levels on the Golf R all this time has definitely become a little bit boring, especially knowing the potential of the hardware under the hood. We have been waiting patiently for COBB to release their Accesstuner for the Golf R, and they have finally delivered. The Accessport tuner and hard parts are now available for the MKVII Golf R, and we are going to test out the gains on our Project Golf R.

Project E39 M5: StopTech Front & Rear Trophy Kit Installation

by Martin Gonzales

In our Brake Refresh Article we maximized the capabilities of our E39 M5's OE braking system by using StopTech's Sport Axle Pack, which includes slotted rotors, stainless steel braided brake lines and Sport brake pads. Front brake ducting was also added in order to improve on our project's susceptibility to brake fade. Though these improvements left us with a braking system that performed better than stock, the E39 M5's brake system has a lot of room for improvement. We will turn the knob to 11, with StopTech's Trophy kit!

Project BOSS 302Revival: Introduction

by Mark Gearhart

Sometimes it’s a disgrace to let a vehicle perish. When crashed beyond their means, some vehicles can cost more than it’s worth to provide a second chance at life. After seeing a 2013 BOSS 302 that was destined to be parted out and discarded, we knew this one couldn’t be left to the vultures. Meet MotoIQ’s latest project vehicle, Boss 302Revival.

Project DBA R35 GT-R: Upping Stopping Power with Brembo and Race Technologies

by Mike Kojima

As you can see so far in this series, we are doing a lot of things to fight the weight of the GT-R.  At 3800 pounds, the GT-R wheels throw around a lot of mass with a great deal of speed and grace, but it can only do it for short periods of time before the weight takes its toll, mostly on the brakes and tires.

LA Auto Show 2017: Nerd’s Eye View – BMW

by Khiem Dinh

So, what was going on in the BMW booth? A lot of electric stuff. A lot of ‘M’ stuff. A lot of carbon fiber. It seems you can get a M Performance version of just about any model BMW now- much like how you can get an AMG Mercedes everything. What do you get for the extra Benjamins dished out for the M Performance packages? Fancy carbon fiber exhaust temps with the M logo etched into the tips for one.

Project DBA R35 GT-R: Getting More Grip with Advan and Toyo!

by Mike Kojima

One of the issues with the R35 GT-R is that it is a big heavy car that gets an amazing amount of performance out of its tires.  The stock tires are a 285/35-20 in the rear and a 255/40-20 in the front. For most cars, this is an impressive amount of rubber but for the 3850 lb GT-R, the car works exceedingly well at first, but the tires quickly fade away.  With some ham-fisted driving, the fading away happens pretty fast.

Project Corvette Stingray C7 Z51: Keepin' it Cool(er)

by Mike Kojima

Corvettes have always been notorious for overheating on the track. The Z51 shod from the factory with additional cooling capacity is much better in this respect, but it can still run hot under the worst conditions. For this reason, Chevrolet has come out with an auxiliary radiator kit to supplement the engine cooling on the C7. Since we plan to drive our car on the track, you can bet we are going to install this!
