Performance Racing Industry 2014: PART 3

The Chevrolet Performance booth was probably one of the most impressive to walk through at PRI 2014, with a few cars and several crate motors to check out.  We've got plenty more on this in the later pages.

When it comes to PRI 2014, you can’t have too much of a good thing.  As we wrap up the show’s coverage I’m left with only one regret—that we couldn’t show you more.  Still, we’ve got plenty to see here in Indianpolis, Indian, so please follow us once again as we walk through the greatest aftermarket car show in America.

If you haven’t gone through PART 1 or PART 2 articles, make sure to see that coverage.  You won't want to miss the gobs of turbos, suspension systems, big brakes, crazy 3000hp engine bays that we cover there.

As mentioned in Part 1, the best part of the show is just when you walk in.  That overwhelming, sensory-overload feeling is like a pure shot of adrenaline.  And, unless you have a specific plan of attack (which is highly recommended), you'll find yourself wanting to walk in all different directions.  Fortunately, PRI is easy to follow row by row.  I actually covered this entire show in just two days, and I probably could have done it in one if I hardly talked to anybody.

In the Garrett Turbos booth sat this Garrett-equipped NHRA Pro Modified rear-wheel drive car, sporting twin GT5518R turbos.  Those suckers have a 88mm compressor wheel and are each good for up to 1600hp.

Do you remember the days when 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds was fast? I remember the 1991 200bhp MR2 Turbo getting a test that verified a sprint in that time, and I was like, “wow!”  Even today, 0-60 in that time is still respectable, or can at least excite several passengers.

But, when it comes to these Pro Mod cars, they hit nearly 200 faster in that amount of time.  Yes, in 2013 this Garrett equipped beast did 0-257mph in 5.87-seconds when it eclipsed the quarter-mile at that same moment, setting a Pro Mod record.  These Pro Mods could compete against some of the Nitro-fueled Funny cars of the late 80s!

This is a cutout of Garrett’s new GTX2871R turbo, which features the largest compressor wheel for that smaller frame size.  With a 54mm compressor wheel (inducer), it’s good for a fast-responding power level ranging between 340-560 HP.  It has an inconel turbine wheel measuring 54mm (76 trim), and features Garrett’s 8mm silicone nitride dual ceramic ball bearing system.
