Project 240SX LSR Sets New Land Speed Record

MotoIQ Staff Report

Team MotoIQ in conjunction with 5523 Motorsports and Specialty Cars Fabrication set a new H/PS land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the recent USFRA World of Speed event. Their experience on the salt however was not entirely drama free.

On September 9th the team put together a first run of 177.492 MPH.  This qualified them to beat the record of 173.329 MPH which they had set in 2013 at SCTA Speed Week.  The car was placed into overnight impound which is where the cars are kept that qualify for record attempts until the next morning.

The Zombie Vampire analyzes the data.

In the morning after examining the datalogs from the AEM Infinity some changes were made to the program to adjust boost levels ahead of the team's second run needed to back up their record.  The changes made in the Infinity proved to be for the better.  On the second run Project 240SX LSR belted out a run of 190.757 MPH with a top speed of 192 MPH for a two way average of 184.124 MPH and a new H/PS Class record.

The H in H/PS represents the engine class with displacements permitted being between 1.0 - 1.5L.  The PS portion is a specific class for a production body car void of aerodynamic modifications, using the same engine family available from the factory, (For example, KA24 or SR20 ) and the same induction method (single turbo must use single turbo or supercharger must use supercharger, etc).

It's critical that your 'chute functions properly. You never know when you might need to pull it while approaching 200 MPH.

While attempting to push the record over 200 MPH, Chuck would go for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride spinning the car not once, but twice at over 196 MPH.  The car suffered minor damage as a result of the high speed spins but Chuck was fortunate enough to walk away unscathed.

We've talked a lot about our efforts to battle corrosion on the car.  Perhaps this picture will help give you an idea of the uphill battle the team faces.

With a new H/PS class record set the trip to the USFRA World of Speed event can ultimately be deemed a success.  However, the team remains hungry for more having just missed out on their Triple Crown goal of a 200 MPH run on the salt.

Chuck would like to extend a special thank you to all of the team members and sponsors as without them none of this would have been possible.

Stay tuned for the full story with all the details from this most recent record setting performance.

If i spun at nearly 200mph, i sure woud need some time off, data analysis and mod(s) to prevent it from happening before attempting it again !

I guess body lift due to aero took its toll... considering the class, is there any way to fight it ?

Congrats to the team for their record. The pilot sure is insane :D

Chuck, you are certifiably insane.

...and awesome.

Congratz on the record. Turn that dial to the right and crack that 200 mph barrier.

Thanks guys. Though I'm not sure who is crazier, the guy behind the wheel or the team members who keep coming back for more sleepless nights and malnutrition filled days. Hell with it, we're all crazy.

We'll be putting up a detailed story of the trip soon. Stay tuned.

Congrats! 10 years ago if someone told me they were nearing 200 mph with a 1.5L engine, I would have never believed it!

To me it's not the 1.5L engine that makes this insane, it's the lack of aerodynamics!

Congrats! Looks like the nut behind the wheel did the trick!

I think it's time to add adult diapers to the list of things to bring to the track! Do you steam clean the underbody after every event?
